Internal Poaching at work

what would you do faced with this dilemma.

i work for a 2nd tier accounting firm, have done so for just under 12months (just finished uni - have only just finished first CA exam this week). I work in a specialised team (superannuation here - but i think you yanks call it 401K's or something), and plan to finish my CA and try and travel & work while the opportunity is there to be had.

The firm seems to have had quite an issue with employee retention for some time due to a change in direction being implemented by a new managing director. The small specialist team I work within has been a substantial victim - we've gone from being well resourced to heavily under resourced - and I mean heavily, there are only 4 of us remaining compared with about a dozen when I started. I'm reasonably happy with where I am at the minute, it is in a massive growth area and I can see it being worthwhile experience, but the work can be quite dull as due to the under-resourcing, the juniors (me and another) are getting slogged with all the compliance and administration, and are not involved in any of the planning and more interesting consultancy work that we used to be when we had the resources to do it. We've just managed to get another supervisor, and have 3 new grads coming on over the nov/feb period, so we should be a bit more resourced shortly.

So you know, I wasn't looking elsewhere or interested in looking elsewhere to change jobs (the hours worked are quite respectable in comparison to other firms), and is one of the key reasons I hadn't looked to work elsewhere.

Anyway, I was out last night for a few quiet ales, and one of the managers from the investment management team at the firm who I've gotten along very well with and chat to regularly as we work quite closely with those guys, threw it out there 'if you're ever interested in coming across to work for us - come and see me, we've got the all clear and are willing to design a role for you if you're interested.'

Now, we spoke briefly about the role, and I am interested in hearing him out to see what the new role would be about in further detail.

The issue I face is, if I speak to him about the role, and decide that the role just wouldnt be what I'm after, i'm concerned this may have a negative impact when my supervisor/director hear that I even gave consideration to going elsewhere, and that will happen - nothing flies under the radar at that place.

Should I discuss this with my supervisor - the fact that i have been approached? I would almost say that they will hear about it sooner or later from someone else that overheard our chat last night, and I'm thinking that it may be better for her to hear it from me rather than someone else. The thing is though, I'm interested in hearing the offer out, to see what its about, but not sure if i'd make the change, and my main concern is I dont know how that would go down within my team if I were just to meet with him.

Any thoughts?

There is no dillemma here: you either want a new job or you don't.

"Possibly not being right for me" is a risk you take no matter WHAT the new job is. You probably don't know this because you haven't worked too long, but that's the truth of the matter.
