The Cat Pee Thread

Cat Pee has got to be one of the most vile and tenacious substances in all creation. Its smell steadfastly clings to fabrics and materials like nothing else.

What cleaning method or product has worked completely and permenantly for you?

Here's an interesting post from another forum: (complete with poor punctuation, spelling and grammer.)

When you are dealing with cat urine or any urine for that matter. The 3 major parts of urine is urea- which the sticky tacky part, the urochrome- which is the pigment or color part and the uric acid cyrstals and salts. Alot of products will work on the 1st two parts listed above which removes the stain and odor, the odor part is not gone the cyrstals just dry and become dormat, Isn't interesting that when it rains, or gets humid the ordor comes back or the carpet gets wet from steam cleaning or more urine from a pet the odor comes back, it always comes back.... It takes an very special product to get rid of urine competely, look at the following site www.urine-off.com this company makes bacteria and enzymes to eat Fats, Oils, Grease, strach, and Sugar. They spent alot of time feeding very specfic bacteria all the components of urine until they had a product that eat it all the way to Black Light Clean- that means that all the residue of the urine is gone.. Give them a try they truly have something very good. Good Luck with the Cat Pee
In looking for the answer elsewhere, a few commercial products such as the one mentioned above have come up repeatedly. I'm probably going to go that route but I thought I'd query you fine folk first.

There's an enzymatic cleaner called "Nature's Miracle" that works wonders on animal accidents. Here around the menagerie, we depend on it.

I don't know. The last apt I lived in my male cat ruined. I even had the area professionally cleaned to the tune of $100 for a small area. Smell and stain were still there. I have found nothing that works besides replacing the carpet.

Fire?

But seriously, the enzyme cleaners are very good.

Nature's Miracle works for us too.

For fabric that can be washed in a machine, I use Oxy Clean. It works like a charm every single time.

I second that.

My mother had a very...tempermental?...cat that when it was angry at her would piss on her bedspread. A friend of hers suggested Oxy Clean, while I suggested getting rid of the cat. Unfortunately, she took her friends advice; fortunately Oxy Clean gets rid of the cat piss smell.

I bought a dog. It really did an excellent job dealing with any potential cat urine problem.

Where did you find a dog that would lick the cat's ass?

Heh Heh. Good one.

But seriously, wouldn't it be good to eliminate (no pun intended) the problem in the first place? I experienced the same with a male cat. Finally told the vet and, after a urine test, he prescribed a special cat food you could only get from the vet. Seems the cat was getting urinary tract infections and peeing in odd places is one result.

I wish I knew all those cleaning systems back the. We used vinegar which I'm sure ins't nearly as good!
