Applying for jobs online

When you apply for jobs online do you A. Go through the job site or B. Screw the job site and email the companies directly ? What is the faster way of being noticed by the company?

I've found that applying online, or emailing a resume is useless. If you have the option, go in person and try to hand the resume directly to person that will be doing the interviewing/hiring. Or email them a resume with a well written cover letter, and then snail mail them the same thing. Nothing shows more effort than a personal appearance though.

rockzilla is prettymuch correct, applying online and emailing a resume is prettymuch useless. Go in, act like the son of God, and hand it personally.

Best of luck.

If youre gonna send unsoliticed resume/job applications, email is by far the worst, even regular mail is better. Fax is better too, you HAVE to read all faxes that come in, whereas if I got an email with the title "soandso looking for job resume enclosed" I would delete it.

I say would becuase I dont have a job myself because I usually send applications by email hah !

My current job was obtained by responding to a public job posting board on the internet called craigslist.org - check it out, maybe they have a local one to you.

You have to do it en masse though, dont expect a response for a few weeks either.

not necessarily. a few jobs ago we were looking to hire another position and gave the fax as the only method of contact. oh my fucking god licking popsicles on a merry go round. the fax machine was blown up. all day every damn day for two months it hummed off resumes. you need to realize that in today's job market there are few jobs and many many many candidates. hiring managers are swamped by piles of faxes and emails and shit... resumes normally don't get more than the cursory look before being thrown into a pile with the others. you need to do something to set yourself apart from the masses of assholes who want the same job you do. make yourself known. track down the hiring manager's number and call them. come in and hand them your resume yourself. let them know who you are and why you're the right one for the job. sometimes you'll get a callback from online job postings, but followthrough will increase your chances tenfold. remember - you need to make yourself stand out. it's the only way you're going to get employed.

Depends. Hit it both ways. The problem is most, if not all companies these days will kindly take your resume and scan it so they can view it electronically. Why electronically? So they can run some stupid app to search for keywords in your resume. Sucks, huh? If you want to know whether they do this or not, ask them if they scan them. If they ask you why you are asking, tell them you will use a more readable font for their scanner.

Phredgreen's got da shit! Follow through is really important. They need to know you didnt sent out 200 resumes and are surfing porn waiting for a telephone call. Get you clean and polished self in the office for a face to face hello. It sure helps.

Every online job search place I've used has been utter crap, either by e-mailing via the website or via the e-mail address I get a jack all reply.

Don't give up on paper resume mailed out the old fashioned way That's how I get hired.

well, i used monster.com recently and had excellent luck with it. I ended up receiving 9 phone calls from different companies looking for someone. definitely doesn't hurt to start a free account with them, stick your resume up there and also do the in person thing.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got given was find out a name. Reading a job application addressed to "Dear Sir/Madam" is an immediate put off - you haven't done your research and you'll end up in the bin. However, a letter addressed "Mr Jones, I write following my phone call of <date> regarding my wish for employment with <company name>" - that will get attention. It's not a standard CV sent to hudreds of companies - you've given it some time. It will at very least make them read what you have to say, which is usually the biggest hurdle.

Hit it every way that you can. Find out where the people of the company hang out... usually at a bar nearby, network, make friends with someone there so that you can get "inside".

It's not just about what you know but also who you know.
