Worse place you ever lived in..and why

As I sit here in my drafty home, the wind literally blowing through my window, I think about some of the really crappy places I've lived in. This does not make the list, by a long shot.
The worse place I ever lived was a basement apartment in Hamilton, ON. When the lights came on, the cockroaches scattered, the mice in the walls scratched continuously, one night a mouse got jammed in my toaster, both toaster and mouse were thrown out.
Sometimes I would hear the sound of streaming water just outside my kitchen window, only to realize someone was taking a pee.
But the "piece de resistance" was the bat infestation. One night my friends and I were just hanging out and the bats suddenly appeared. The next morning they were hanging off my curtains (bats that is, friends were hiding under blankets).
I lived there for a year and that was more than enough. Did I mention my neighbor with the python? Who regularly asked me to come see his python....yeah, I know.

And that is my worse place, hands down. And I've lived in some real holes.

Oof, Hamilton. 'nuff said right there.

Worst place I lived was in a house in Belleville, ON. It was an ancient house that settled improperly, leaving gaps around the original (!!!) windows, and in some places over an inch gap between the bottom of the trim and the floor itself. The entire house was heated by a single in-wall furnace that we could only turn up to 17C in the winter. It still cost almost CDN $500 a month to heat the place. We put plastic over the windows in the winter, and ice formed on the inside.

The vent for the upstairs washroom (which one could not use if one had to take a shit) was quite literaly a drainpipe. The place should have been condemned.

Ahh, college days.

wow, my house suddenly seems like a palace. That was a hilarious story.

I call my current place the "hobbit house" as the ceilings are all really low (kinda sucks for my 6' 1" boyfriend). When we moved in our upstairs neighbor told me not to put anything in a particular closet because the sewer backed up through the floor there once.

The spiders are horrible in the summer. I'm not bothered by them, but Erik is. Also, our yard is a literal mud pit, you gotta by careful not to get sucked in. Lets see here.....oh yeah! We have a total of like three small windows. Its a literal fire trap, things are definitely not up to code.

And the bathroom smells like soggy walls. Yes I know what soggy walls smell like.

Ahh, spiders, those I have in quantity. The benefits of a century+ old farmhouse with a crawlspace for a basement.

Soggy walls, that's always a smell that puts my mind at ease! I do hope you have no more than 3 rooms (other than a bathroom) in that place of yours!

And Hagatha, a buddy of mine had a place very similar sounding in Hamilton as well back when he was going to the college there (and working at the UPS hub). Awful place.

I once lived in a house still referred to as "The Slum" by its current residents. It's been continuously populated by members of the men's (and sometimes women's) cross country team of my college. The porch has been on the verge of collapse since at least 1992, and one of the toilets once fell through a floor because of rot (thankfully with no one on it). The bugs aren't too bad, but if anyone cooks anything in one of the first floor apartments, the whole house smells. When I was last there about 5 years ago, the hole that I put in the wall by simply leaning against it was still there.

I lived in a house that was very popular with guests until it started to smell like a dead body. We never did figure out what happened; our landlord refused to investigate and for all we know the sewer was backing up under the house. Either way, that place reeked. We tried everything. We had plug-ins in every wall and sprayed neutralizer every day, had these odor-eating filter things too...nothing worked.

It also doesn't help that I had a bad roommate situation there that worked our very poorly in the end, and when I went to move out, I pulled my mattress away from the wall to find the wall covered in mold. Yuck.

The worst I can say about where I currently live is that the front door needs to be repaired and weatherstripped, and we have ants. It's a lot better by comparison, and in better shape.

Yeah, I saw the thread title and thought the apartment I lived in one year in college was a shit hole, but you guys have lived in some places that aren't fit to be lived in. But what the hell, here's my story.

My second year of college I moved into my first apartment by myself. The previous year I had two roommates who trashed my apartment so the money I had to spend fixing that one cut into my budget for my new apartment. The apartment had carpet that was older than me, with all kinds of weird stains on it. It had a constant smell that I never could get rid of that was a cross between cigarette smoke, weed, and cat piss. The ceiling leaked water, the neighbor on one side of me was a gangsta wannabe playing thunderously loud music all night, the neighbor on the other side was a mental nutcase. When the wind blew outside the blinds flapped about like the windows weren't even closed. People were always fighting and the cops were there regularly. But other than too many crickets I never had issues with roaches or other critters.

The back of a 94 Ford Escort. With a serious spider infestation (I think an egg sac opened somewhere in the air conditioning unit that blew hot air in the summer). And a closed container of rice pudding that was left in the car for about 6 months that spilled open. Nuff said. Longest week of my life.

Although it isn't bad in comparison, perhaps, one of my very good friends lived in a house with 5 foot ceilings. Everywhere. There wasn't a place inside that you could stand fully upright - it was the lower of an upper lower duplex. I cannot even imagine why it was built that way....

Also, there wasn't a single window in the joint, and the humourous thing was that the hanging light fixtures nearly touched the floor....

Tinfoil, with regards to Hamilton having a plethora of shitty apartments to rent, I remember when I was apartment hunting being shown an apartment that was literally charred....the walls were charred, the furniture was charred and the owner was acting as though this was the most normal thing in the world. I mean, obviously there had been a major fire there so wouldn't you clean it up before trying to rent it????????
The whole incident left me completely baffled.

No soup, that sounds like the office in Being John Malkovich.

I am trying to think of the worst place I've ever lived and it just doesn't live up to these standards. The worst place was an apartment over a store just south of Yonge and Finch in Toronto.

The cockroaches were very bad. The lack of insulation and single pain windows was very cold in winter. The fact it was electric baseboard heating meant we kept the place like a fridge all winter and just lived in our bedroom. Add to this, we shared a wall with our neighbour's bedroom and he would either a) have loud sex or b) play very loud music (perhaps to mask the loud sex. Both a and b always happened at 4 in the morning.

The location was ok and the layout was nice but... given the above. It was the worst.

Worst place I've ever lived was a small house that was on the property of a funeral home. The folks that owned the funeral home rented out the little house, and there was always cars and hearses coming and going. It was pretty depressing.

The house itself was cold, old, and infested with spiders. Particularly black widows and big assed catface spiders. Good times.

I spent 5 months living in an enclosed porch.

The floor was flagstone, the roof was glass, 3 walls were glass, and 1 was the exterior wall of the house. It was actually pretty well built and didn't leak much. The soffits were open but screened, so the bugs stayed out but the wind and driving rain didn't. Remarkably few spiders and insects. Power supplied by an extension cord through the original exterior door. No real lights, but that was ok because I felt pretty self conscious having glass in 5 directions. For various reasons, I had to go 'outside' and walk around to the back of the house to get inside and use the bathroom. And that was one special bathroom, which included a garden hose to adapt the bathtub into a shower.

And just as I was trying to figure out what to do about the looming canadian winter, the house was literally condemned. I was "home" when the housing guy came with his papers and staple gun and told me I had 48 hours to vacate.

The worst place I have ever lived is in a place in downtown London, ON. The landlord was a dick, but worst of all the place was above a bar. When I first moved in I didn't think it would be too noisy because it was a pool hall. Little did I know they had live bands play several times a week- started at 11:00pm and played till 2:00am.

I also had someone unsuccessfully try to break into that apartment while I was away, which made me feel kind of violated.

The cherry on the cake was the time some stranger buzzed my apartment and asked me to let them in. Of course I didn't because I didn't know him, so he threatened to come up there and kill me. He kept screaming and trying to smash in the door telling me I was dead. Of course I called the cops but by the time they made an appearance he had gone away. It was probably just some drunk bastard.

Ahhh....the days of university...

Worse for me was also in Hamilton. There were too many students, living in squalor. The kitchen was smeared with grease from one loser cooking pork constantly; the sounds of third rate sex echoed, the mattresses were filthy, flies swarmed outside the window a la Amityville and, oh, yes, there was a Nazi living in the basement. The closest second was a haunted convent, but that is a totally different story.

I had to check to make sure this wasn't "The Worst Place You've lived in Canada" Y'all are not painting a pretty picture, and this Hamilton place is fucking off the map as I'm concerned.

The worst place I've lived was an apartment in Urbana IL. My roommate did not help - at all - after having lived with his mother until he was 24, thus having no concept of cleaning after himself or being responsible. One of those old houses that had been cut up into apartments, and I'd be surprised if it had been inspected. One of the walls in the kitchen was plugged with what appeared to be the top of a styrofoam cooler. The previous tenant had been involved in a fight with the landlord, and left a mess which wasn't completely cleaned when we moved in. Honestly, the roommate was the bigger problem. Given the $$$ it was costing (cheap), the place was livable. The situation brought on by the lazy ass roommate was what made it untenable. I moved out three months early, and ate the rent to do so. That was the proverbial straw; no more roommates for el pigglet until he settles down, if he settles down. And in that case, I'd prefer a duplex

Even though I have lived with families in Belarus and Russia, and even though I have shared a two bedroom apartment with three other men...I have to say the worst place I have ever lived was my parents' house. I shared a bedroom with my sister (who was messy and had a problem with stealing) and my parents were (as I've mentioned more than a few times) physically and verbally abusive. I am so happy I live with my husband in our own little one bedroom apartment now.
