So *hopefully* I will be going to San Diego (if we can get his skymiles for korea to hurry up and show up so I can get the ticket lol) in March to visit Dave while he is out there working. I will fly in Friday nite and out Monday morning, leaving me saturday and sunday to do "stuff"

anyone got anything to recommend that would be fun to do?

Balboa park and the san diego zoo - even if you aren't a zoo lover this is worth seeing

the gaslamp quarter if you like victorian architecture - it's a really interesting stroll...

Hotel coranado - just a beautiful piece of architecture and tons of history

Then, there's Tijuana, Mexico - only 15 minutes to the south. You can park on this side of the boarder and walk across. You'll need a passport to get back, though. Also, it's not a trip I recommend for the faint of heart: It's a different world over there... I usually recommend driving across and bypassing Tijuana altogether. Drive about half hour south to Puerto Nuevo and enjoy slipper lobster, reasonable bartering, and the much cleaner markets along the beach.

Working with the zoo, there's also San Diego Wild Animal Park 30 minutes to the north - you could get passes good for both places.

There are Indian casinos nearby if you feel lucky.

Black's Beach (clothing optional) is in La Jolla 15 min to the North.

Baseball is also an option. Padres play at least one day each weekend in March at PETCO park, downtown.

I have to almost agree hehehe I know it sound bad because the first thing most people say is the Zoo....I honestly dont get into zoo's (or aquatic places). Id much rather do museums and such.

I've added those two ideas from Mal to my list. I dont know about Mexico either (although I have a passport) I just really dont care about visiting there either, although IF they are gonna stamp my passport or something I might just go down for that lol I have NO desire to see Tijuana.

the clothing optional beach sounds fun!!!

There are a number of interesting museums and gardens at Balboa Park (where the zoo is). The architecture is interesting there as well.

I would recommend a stroll around Mission Bay, followed by a trip into downtown La Jolla....very cool shops, and excellent eating, Also the best Beaches in the county (Blacks Beach it there, but you need to walk down the Cliffs from the hang glider launch). Driving over the Coronado Bay Bridge to get to the Hotel Del, is nice and Silver Strand State Beach is very cool. You might also head out towards Torry Pines and get the view from the Golf Course there...its impressive.
Bit of a trip but....up the coast is the Ferry to Catalina Island, which is absolutely beautiful if you have the time. The Zoo in San Diego is amazing, and truthfully the Animals are secondary to the enclosures. Very few Cages at all, as they have been mostly replaced with carefully created replicas of the creatures habitat. The Wild Animal park is OK....but generally not worth the long drive to get there.
Hard to find, but a cool drive , is the Midget housing on Mt. Soleded. There is an entire block of tiny houses made for people of small stature up there.....blows your mind when you see them, and the view from the top of Mt. Soledad is excellent.

Anyway....Have fun.

I was going to say visit Coronado, but mal beat me to it The entire island is beautiful and there are a lot of fun shops and places to eat there, and the hotel is amazing.

I would strongly advise against Tijuana...I went as a teen with my family and I hated every minute of it. It was dirty, too full of people, and we didn't trust eating or drinking anything (we didn't have any bottled water, we should have brought some). People literally chased us out of their shops and down the street trying to get us to buy their stuff. It was a complete waste of time.

Also, San Juan Capistrano isn't too far away by train (Amtrak has regular trains in the area) if that is something you'd be interested in.

This post has made me really miss Southern California lol.

The zoo in San Diego is the best in the country, very likely the world. When I was there several years ago I got to see very young pandas, but now you can do that at home. La Jolla is worth the drive to see. It has high end shopping, but the view is free. There is a very small aquarium around the corner associatted with Scripps. The view there is very good as it is up the cliff just north of La Jolla. There is an "old town" area which is I don't think is worth seeing, but there is a Mexican place there that is world famous for its pork carnitas. If you really want a more local feel just go up and hang around Mission and Ocean Beachs (these are towns, not just beaches).
