Okay, maybe I'm just naive. But I do not understand what the hell is wrong with kids these days. In junior or high school we never would have thought to drink cough syrup to get high or choke ourselves. And it hasn't been that long since I was a teen...

Did kids you knew back in your school days do things like this? I am so curious. When did crap like this become cool? These creative lengths kids will go to...

Hell kids have been strangling themselves for years - - though when I was growing up they were using it as a masturbatory aid rather than as a "thrill" by itself.

The bottom line is that kids are by and large freaking stupid, which is why they need adults around to keep them alive until their brains start working, generally some time around age 25

The reason we're seeing more and more cases where kids do idiotic things that could get them killed is because parents are becoming less and less involved with their kids' lives - hey that's WORK after all, and work is hard - and so the kids don't have the guidance they need.

There are all kinds of scare stories about what "kids these days" are doing. Most often they're either completely fabricated, or based on an isolated incident. Remember the "rainbow party" thread?

I remember a fad when I was at primary school (elementary for your americans) to bend over double, hypervetilate for a while and then stand up rapidly to cause fainting.

Can't say it did much for me, but several friends seemed to like it.

(that was about 25 years ago).

I thought it was insane when I saw a Dr Phil show about cough syrup abusers. I thought I was the only one. Haha. In high school I used to down two or three bottles a day to be high throughout the school day. My friends thought I was nuts...and even I didn't think it was "normal."

Ha!

Good to see that the War on Some Drugs is working.

In my day, kids didn't huff paint and get brain damage or accidentally kill each other trying to asphyxiate... we just smoked some pot. But, thankfully, the devil weed and other relatively safe illegal drugs have been demonized to the point where kids are exploring all that stuff that is so dangerous that its use was limited enough that it hasn't been made illegal yet.

Not to threadjack, but when I first moved out, I picked up a fresh out of high school roommate who did just about everything. Huffed whatever he could get his hands on, ingested all kinds of things--including dangerous amounts of alcohol and had unsafe sex with just about any girl who would bat her eyes at him. Not to mention all the physically unsafe stuff he did emulating the guys on 'Jackass.'

We were working together one afternoon, when one of the older guys offered us some pot in the parking lot. My roommate turned him down with a "no thanks, that shit'll kill you."

I think kids are going to be kids. There's always new avenues of stupidity to be explored and I rest uneasy in the knowledge that my kids will be no exception. One day I'll be old and sitting around the retirement home watching the news remembering fondly the good ol' days when kids used to just 'tighten belts around their own neck until....'

This is called culling the herd.

It is good for the strength of the greater collective if the weak and/or stupid are weeded out.

We did that in Ukraine when I was in elementary as well. I was too scared to do it at the time, but a couple of my friends did on numerous occasions.

That was about 12 years ago.

A few of my friends were into eating a big lunch and then working out on the gym until they puked in high school. This wasn't a one-time thing either -- they did it usually every week. They said that puking was fun.

I knew some kids who were into that weird stuff, and I've met quite a few girls in college who abuse over the counter drugs.

maybe I got lucky...but I have no desire for any of that stuff. give me a beer a month and a little THC about once a year and I'm doing A-okay.

this is nothing new. I never did it because I didn't see how it would really be that fun. There are so many other ways to get your rocks off than cutting off your air supply.

Most of the kids I knew were more into smoking pot and sleeping around then they were into other stuff like huffing and choking.

From what I hear, the choking thing isn't any bigger than any of the other stupid crap kids do...just something to really flare up parents (bless the media..)

I agree with most everything that has been said in this thread - choking yourself just to feel high is definitely a stupid thing to do - but I will take offense to this one remark. I'm 21 and I consider myself to be an adult - I live on my own, have held down a full time job for over five years now and do not need an 'adult' around to keep me alive. My brain is working just fine now as are the brains of a lot of other people my age. This comment is just a generalization of the masses. Yes, there are some who don't grow up (not even after their 25th birthday) but to say that by and large 'kids' need adults around until they turn 25 is a pretty low remark without a lot to back it up.....

just my thought on the matter....

Some estimates of the age at which the brain reaches full maturity extend in to the mid-twenties. Although you could probably argue that's the age the brain stops working

As was stated above the comment you originally refer to probably draws from the fact that the brain reaches full maturity at around 25 years of age.

Quote:
One of the findings he discussed showed the frontal cortex area — which governs judgment, decision-making and impulse control — doesn’t fully mature until around age 25.
http://www.nih.gov/nihrecord/08_12_2005/story04.htm

Not to say you cannot make responsible decisions at any earlier age. That, as you mentioned, depends on the individual.
