I lived in Durham for 10 years, which is right next door to Raleigh. I don't know Raleigh all that well, but Bullock's Barbecue in Durham is probably a :45 drive, and has the best barbecue I've found in the state. I'm sure there are places to go in Raleigh that are about as good, though. The secret is: look for a wall festooned with pictures of famous people eating there, often photographed with the owner. That's how you can tell it's the real deal.

NC barbecue has a vinegar-based sauce on it. It's awesome, but totally unlike anything I've ever seen anywhere else.

Only the eastern part. The Triangle offers both Eastern and Lexington style, which consists of all shoulder meat and a tomato based sauce. Eastern NC BBQ consists of whole hog meat with the vinegar based sauce. Both are very good, but eastern bbq can get a little fatty for my taste. [/ BBQ lecture]

Sorry, couldnt help myself.

So, where is a good place near Raleigh? I heard Lexington was the cream of the crop for que in NC. How far is this away from say the Durham airport?

Lexington is about an hour and a half highway time from RDU. In Raleigh, Old Time BBQ is good, as is Don Murrays. Mind you, these are BBQ joints in the classic sense; very basic and in block buildings. However, they are very clean and they can cook up a mean Q

Yeah, it's not a great day to be visiting NC. Tomorrow ought to be better. Fall chill, but sunny. You brought a good jacket, I hope?
