Hangover Remedies

After having too much tequila tonight, I've been wondering what people do when they have hangovers. I never have headaches, just nausea. It goes away after a while, but I've always wondered if there is any real remedy. I just wait it out because if I take anything I vomit.

1. don't drink so much (we all know that is not going to happen)

2. Drink a TON of water, and any you can drink the night before is great.

Ona side not, NEVER take aspirin or anything like it. It is VERY bad for you after you have been drinking.

I heard that aspirins and acetominophens were bad, but ibuprophen was good for the morning after.

If you got the champagne and orange juice, a couple of momosas will clear that hangover right up!

I think Ibu's are bad too. All of those things are hard on your liver and kidney (don't quote me on this) and those organs are too busy trying to break down the alcohol. It almost poisons the organs when you take them.

Water and sleep are the only things that will really work.

Okay about this hair of the dog....how much? I've heard that before but I don't know if it means one beer or six, etc. I tried drinking a SHITLOAD of water before I went to sleep yesterday and it worked. But I've always been curious about the "hair of the dog." If that works I'd rather do that haha.

This advice im about to give you has been passed down from generation to generation. And, it actually works quite well if you are man/or woman enough to handle it.
First- get in the shower, with the temp as warm as you can stand it.
2nd- Then gradually, adjust the taps so it gets colder. Make it as cold as you can, for as long as you can stand it.

If you do this properly, you will be freezing cold and breathing heavily when you get out. But what you actually do is shock your body into a state where it forgets about feeling seedy. Im serious, this really works.

The ultimate is to start an IV with normal saline, followed by a small caffine push.

Hook a nasla cannula or mask up and breath pure Oxygen until the bag runs out.

At the end of the IV push IV Phenergan.

Sleep for one hour, and your good to go.

------------------------------------------------

With no access to the above

1/2 of coke (the initial part of caffine does have vasoconstrictive qualities, but only temporarily. It will stop the headache)

1 baby aspirin

1 gallon of water (if can be stomached)

If someone can drive you go to an Oxygen bar (if ones around) and get a dose.

1 shot of oxygenated aloe vera juice

3 hours of sleep

Ohhhh tequilla....love it! Nasty ol' stuff though in the morning.

Drink a TON of water the night before - does wonders for a person in the morning.

I've heard (never felt good enough to try it though ) that soda and bitters works well....pretty much the only place you find bitters nowadays is in a bar though so if you're going there you might as well just line up another Cuervo!

For me....milk is the only thing I need to cure a hangover. If I don't have any....ohhhh look out!

Excellent advice.

Alcohol hangovers are caused mostly by free radicals and dehydration. Preloading with antioxidants before and during drinking will help reduce nausea, vomitting, and generally "feeling sick". Keep hydrated with water or a sports drink and if you vomit, be sure to rehydrate yourself quickly.

1. take a Centrum before drinking

2. Drink a water now and again during the night.

3. When you get home, pound a galss of water and gatorade.

4. Wake and bake. Best hangover helper ever!

5. Coca-cola. If your stomach is really bad, flatten the cola by stirring it. the cola settles the stomach.

it is simple - your body has no electrolites and thinks it is dehydrated. So, it closes up and stores everything. Drinking water only adds to the misery because your body conserves every ounce. That is why your heads hurts and your mouth is like cotton - you are sealed up. A guart of quality sports drink THE NIGHT BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP replaces the electrolytes you lost and your body can read the fluid level correctly.

Sun Tzu has the right idea.

I used to live next to a couple EMTs. They would always drink all night then hook themselves up to an IV before they passed out. They woke up just fine. Unfortunatly I never had the balls to let a piss drunk ambulance driver stick me with a needle at 4:30 in the morning.

Hair of the dog is really just putting off the inevitable. The best way to take care of things (for me at least) is to drink a ton of water before going to bed (since a hangover is mostly due to dehydration) a couple of pre-emptive tylenols before bed doesn't hurt either.

Edit : Yeah, wake and bake is a pretty good strategy too.

We had access to some IVs in the Army, and they were great. The IVs were for training, and none of us were actual medics, so understandably we always used them the morning after! In case you don't have access to IVs, just use a slower delivery method for basically the same thing and drink a sports drink. Or better yet, mix equal parts sports drink and water if you can stomach the taste.

If I know I'm going out and getting drunk (wedding, birthday, ect), I go pick up Jamieson's Anti-Hangover pills. They don't completely get rid of the headache, but leave you with a numb sensation the next morning. Then I keep drinking water. Way better than praying to the porcelin gods and wishing I was dead because of a headache.

Jamieson's Anti-Hangover is a herbal mix that I think stops the shrinking of the brain caused by the dehydration effects of the alcohal. You take them before and during your drinking session. I don't know if they are available outside Canada.

I'm sick of this "before you go to bed do this" stuff. The only time I get hangovers is when I'm so fucked up I can't do anything before bed. I wake up on the couch fully clothed in the morning. I'm sure many of you can relate. When you're not able to prevent the night before, buy Pedialyte(designed to rehydrate infants with diarrhea) and drink a bottle or 2 in the morning. Similar to a sports drink, but with a ton more electrolytes.
If no access to Pedialyte, try a few pieces of burnt toast and a huge glass of orange juice. The carbon in the burnt toast helps(think about how they put charcoal in people's stomachs that have alcohol poisoning, works on a smaller scale)...

Get some fluids in (ivs are great as you can sleep during, but you need someone with knowhow who isn't hung over to put it in!). Otherwise try something easily absorbed - oral rehydration solutions (meant for severe diarrhoea) are good - they have a bit of salt, a bit of sugar in, to help your body absorb the water. And perhaps some ibuprofen for the head - good luck!

During the party: Drink a glass of water after every drink you have. It'll keep you hydrated.

The next day: Drink some Pedialyte and a glass of water. Replaces the electrolytes and hydrates you.

Why do hangovers occur?
P. Bouchard of Orange, Calif. explains...

The alcohol hangover has been known since Biblical times: "Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink" (Isaiah 5:11).

Approximately 75 percent of those who drink alcohol to intoxication will experience a hangover. Consumption of relatively large amounts of alcohol leads to more severe symptoms, which include headache, nausea, vomiting, thirst and dryness of mouth, tremors, dizziness, fatigue and muscle cramps. Often there is an accompanying slump in occupational, cognitive or visual-spatial skills. Other symptoms, such as tachycardia (rapid heartbeat) and changes in blood pressure, might go unnoticed by the sufferer.

Although still under debate, the cause and mechanism of a hangover seem to involve several factors.

Hangover has been suggested to be an early stage of alcohol withdrawal. Acetaldehyde, a breakdown product of alcohol metabolism, plays a role in producing hangover symptoms. Chemicals formed during alcohol processing and maturation known as congeners increase the frequency and severity of hangover. Liquors such as brandy, wine, tequila, whiskey and other dark liquors containing congeners tend to produce severe hangovers, whereas clear liquors (such as white rum, vodka, and gin) cause hangovers less frequently. Researchers have shown that severe hangover occurred in 33 percent of subjects who ingested bourbon (which is high in congeners) but in only 3 percent of those who consumed the same dose of vodka (which is low in congeners). As a rule of thumb, the darker a liquor's color, the more congeners it contains.

Patients with hangovers show changes in the blood levels of several hormones, which are often responsible for some of the hangover symptoms. For example, alcohol inhibits antidiuretic hormone, which leads to excessive urination and dehydration. Dehydration accentuates the symptoms of a hangover. Other factors that contribute to an alcohol hangover include consumption of larger quantities of alcohol than the person can tolerate. Individuals who drink alcohol rapidly, or without food, or without diluting it with nonalcoholic beverages, are more prone to developing a hangover. Mixing different alcoholic drinks can also cause a hangover. Additionally, smoking, loud music, flashing lights and decreased quality and quantity of sleep can exacerbate hangover headaches.

One can diminish the severity of the hangover by paying attention to the amount and type of alcohol consumed, as well as controlling other factors mentioned above. It is not clear that sugar-containing foods ease hangover symptoms, but sugar and fluids can help overcome hypoglycemia and dehydration, and antacids can help alleviate nausea. To reduce headache, anti-inflammatory drugs should be used cautiously. Aspirin may irritate the stomach and alcohol can amplify the toxic effects of acetaminophen on the liver. Other drugs have been used to treat hangovers, but most have questionable value. Propranolol, a beta blocker drug, has no beneficial effect on the symptoms of hangover. Tolfenamic acid, a prostaglandin inhibitor, produces some improvement in hangover symptoms when given prophylactically. The psychotropic sedative chlormethiazole has been reported to reduce symptoms of hangover, as have vitamin B6 and an herbal preparation called Liv.52 made by the Himalaya Drug Co. in Bombay, India.

I'm going to try the gatorade before bed idea.

I wish I was better at pounding a glass of water between drinks. When I do it, it always works.

When I fail and feel really shitty, a chocolate shake is all that helps.

Good idea, even having some gatorade while drinking is good enough for me to stave off anything resembling a hangover. Along the lines of "drink water before sleeping", try drinking VitaminWater - I woke up the next morning fresh as a daisy. If you're short on cash, get a packet of Super Emerg-gen'C, it's this small fizzy packet that is loaded with vitamins.

ANTACIDS - Take a hand full of Tums before you go to bed
This normally settles the stomach from producing so many acids over night, which of course gives you the beer shits.

Lots of water with some kind of dietary supplement (pill , drink or solid food) it doesn't matter as long as it has plenty of vitamins

UPDATE: Well, after reading all this great advice, I decided that the gatorade/water before bed idea sounded good. It was also the most feasible, since I don't have any sort of access to an IV, and usually can't find any "hair of the dog" the next day. It worked. I chugged about five big glasses of water before I went to bed, and even though I was too fucked up to take off my pants, I woke up with nothing more than a horrible taste in my mouth and slight diarrhea. I think I'm going to stick with this method. next time I'm going to try the gatorade. You all have some really innovative ideas about curing hangovers, I wish I had known them before. Gracias.
