Top 3 most important health tips:
1. Move More... more ....
Make it your daily routine to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs and avoid usind escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it's a stress buster. Think 'move' in small increments of time. It doesn't have to be an hour in the gym or a 45-minute aerobic dance class or tai chi or kickboxing. But that's great when you're up to it. Move more and feel better! 2. Reduce Stress Of course, easier said than done.... Stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible. 3. Avoid Excessive Drinking/ Quit Smoking While recent studies show a glass of wine or one drink a day (two for men) can help protect against heart disease, more than that can cause other health problems such as liver and kidney disease and cancer. The jury is definitely in on this verdict. Ever since 1960 when the Surgeon General announced that smoking was harmful to your health, Americans have been reducing their use of tobacco products that kill. Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? It seems the stars in every movie of late smoke cigarettes. Warn your children of the false romance or 'tough guy' stance of Hollywood smokers.

I often work while listening to a Pink Floyd album...keeps the level of stress down, and defnitely helps my mental health.
Other than that, I often stretch while working, my arms, or legs under the table... It saves me time, and can be quite relaxing. Drinking enough water is also a healthy habit. |

I frequently go to a gym to get my exercise. I HAVE to have music to listen to though, otherwise I can't last. My one big problem though in maintaining my weight is not the exercise, but the eating! I love eating out at restaurants. Sometimes when I get bored or depressed I eat, which is really not good. I guess you could say I have an emotional attachment to food.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Kill two birds with one stone. Exercise reduces stress. Go runnings, left weights, whatever. You'll feel better about yourself, relaxed, and the endorphins released will make you feel great. Your bodies natural crack.

Wash your hands. A lot. Especially after being with kids. Especially after shaking hands with a lot of strangers, or otherwise passing objects back and forth between numerous people, or handling a lot of money. Especially after working with anything contaminated with anonymous substances. If you can't wash your hands right away, learn to avoid touching your face or mouth or eyes _until_ you've washed your hands.
You will avoid a fair number of colds and a certain number of gastrointestinal illnesses. Hard-won lesson for me. Second: don't eat food that makes you feel bloated, sluggish, or otherwise bad afterwards. No matter how good it tastes. Your body is trying to tell you something; you may consider bloatedness, etc., a normal feeling, because of what you normally eat, but it's actually a sign that you're not eating things that your body can handle very well. This becomes more obvious past 25. Even if you don't have a particular nutrition regime, think about your body's reactions to the food you pick, and you won't go too far wrong. Third, moderate exercise several times a day is better for overall fitness and weight loss than heavy exercise once a day. Last edited by Rodney; 07-29-2006 at 04:52 PM.. |

Agree with moving more. Kids nowadays don't do a lot other than watch t.v. and play video games. They need to get outside and enjoy running around and playing with their friends. If we learn this early in life, we will be more likely to stay active later in life.

Airborne tablets work. They really do. Says a former substititute and summer school teacher, me. Sure it's $7 a tube, but you stay well. Even when one of the little buggers coughs on you. They even work after you're exposed. |

Another teacher weighing in here. If you're working with little ones you can't avoid some touching. The key here is not to put the contaminants where they'll do the most harm. Simply, in additon to hand washing and hand sanitizer, avoid touching yourself in the face. Germs come in through the mouth and nose for the most part. Don't give them a ride there.

Also if you get sick you can take Wellborne or Zicam and they will shorten sick time. I and my wife have taken Zicam and we think it shortened the ilness by days compared to others who got the same bug.
