new furniture
Okay, I think this is the right forum for this.... anyways I'm looking into buying a few new pieces of furniture such as a new couch. This is actually a big deal as i'm actually looking to buy new... not the bargin deals in the paper or driving around the neighborhood looking for good throw-aways...( awww college.... ) anyways there seems to be quite the selection out there. Well to make a long story short I kind of like the ones that are real soft and cushy, if that makes sense.. you know, the ones where you just sink into the back and its all fluffy like. Well I was wondering how anybody out there who has one such as that likes theirs?.. also how does all that padding and stuffing stand up over time? will it settle out and lose its "luster" per say..? I think i'd purchase this kind but would like an opinion from somebody who has had one for awhile. thanks for the feedback!

I bought most of my furniture at Marshall Field's, and I've been very happy with it. I have the kind of couch that you're describing, and it's the one that gets the most use by far. We've had ours for about 5 years, and it gets used every day, and we haven't had any issues at all, including the ones you described.

My couch is probably about 10 years old - and well -- 7 of those years it got no use at all because I was always on the road and not sitting my butt in the couch... It wasn't an expensive couch to begin with... (it's a sofa bed from jennifer convertibles) but for a sofa bed, it's comfy... and it's moved twice.
the only thing i would never do on a sofa again... because the just look like crap now, is get a sofa that doesnt have a padded back and has what look like big throw pillows for the back... they've gotten a bit misshapen and just don't look that great anymore... i'd much rather have a sofa that has the back cushion attached...

I bought a new sofa a couple months ago. If you want something good and nice dont go the store that has a bunch of sofas for 500 dollars. Spending two grand in not necessary either. Find something in the middle.
When I went I sat on just about every sofa in the show room. Thats really what you need to do, and have the salesperson help you find A) sofa firmness with B) sofa style, in the price range that you are looking for.

Even a good couch will show its age after about seven years of steady use. (Moms and Grandmoms put slipcovers on their couches for a reason -- to make the upholstery last longer.) That's why you buy quality; get something with good construction and solid padding that's worth recovering.
Personally I don't like low, ultra-soft couches because the upholstery just gets saggier as they get older and become what I call "man-eating couches:" once you sink into one, it's hard to get up! It's like they've half-swallowed you. I haven't owned one of these myself, but I've seen how my friend's couches have aged over the years. Personally, I like firmer upholstery and a couch that seats the person close to upright. I've had very good luck with the La-Z-Boy brand; they have a full-line of living room furniture, not just recliners. Last edited by Rodney; 06-30-2006 at 12:12 PM.. |

there's nothing wrong with the 'bargain' deals in the newspaper... you can get new furniture but not pay full price for it... a lot of department stores and furniture manufacturers have outlet stores where you can get furniture at a fraction of the price of what it was in the showroom... it mightbe last years model - it might have a small unnoticable ding in it somewhere but it's still perfectly good furniture...
I have an overstuffed chair in my living room that matches my sofa perfectly... it's cushy and comfy and the perfect reading chair... i paid 200 dollars for the chair (delivery included) at an outlet - if i bought it new, it would have cost about 600... what was wrong with it? It was missing one of the thingies that cover the padded arm... (the one that was there looked awful on the chair anyhow so I didn't care) it pays to check out those newspaper bargains... it's still new furniture... but not full price
