really did it this time
well i rolled my ankle on saturday, not that big a deal, because my ankles pretty much made of glass, i was on a nice run, 2 months without a sprain or roll, o well. This one was kinda weird, i heard 3 pops, one when it went out, when when it was all the way out, and one when it went back in. now thats quality!
anyways, i've had this unstable ankle for about 2 years now, and im wondering, if my initial gusse that it's a bone chip, is an incorrect assumption. I've been to 2 docotors, and they tell me im fine, but then why is there part of my ankle that looks like it should be round, missing a chunk in the x ray.... o well so could it be anything besides just a bone chip. I'm not a docotor and im not going to pretend i am, but i have a freind studying in med school that says i may have microfractures. I have no idea what that means, micro means small, and fracture means fracture, so do i have small fractures?!? what can be done about microfractures, how long do they take to heal, and what the hell is a microfracture?

Brace the ankle, and wear high tops if your going to play bball on an injured ankle. I'd say stay off it for anything more than walking for a few months (2-3 months), immediatally after basketball season is finished. If you feel like exercising, go jump in a pool for a few hours. Again, tons of calcium.

thakns for the advice, i do have a plethera of braces, from active ankles, to ankle supports, to the lace up kind, i'll probably go with the support or the lace up one. and when playing sports, i always brace my ankles at the least, sometimes i tape them and brace them

Having had problems with my left ankle for the last 14 years, I think that I can grasp your pain, especially since the times that I've sprained that ankle must be getting towards 100, if I haven't already passed it.
I'm not sure why your friend thinks you have microfractures since that shouldn't cause any inherent weakness, which seems to be the issue. My guess is that you probably didn't recover sufficiently from the original injury before reinjuring it, but you could also just have weak joints. I'd do everthing that I could to strengthen the surrounding muscles and connective tissue. Back in the day, I used to show up an hour to two hours before practice to do physical theapy, which usually consisted of using my foot to "write" the alphabet in the air or under water, doing hopping drills up and downstairs or in grids and using a piece of surgical tubing to do pulls in various directions. I also braced it whenever I went for a run, and I got to be pretty good at doing a heal lock on myself. The chunk that is missing in the xray could just be a divot (for lack of a better term) where a piece of connective tissue crosses the bone to where it attaches. You'd also feel a bone chip pretty easily since the chip would be causing major irritation once the rest of the injury is healed. Good luck! |

If you have microfractures and you continue to play on that ankle you're just asking for a much worse injury. Obviously, I'd see a doctor rather than trusting a med student friend and some people on a forum and get a real diagnosis.

i've seen 2 docotrs and they both cleared me to play basketball. I actually don't think i have microfractures, because i'd imagine it would hurt allt he time with that, and it doesn't hurt all the time, only when i injury it.
and yea i'd be suprised if the number of times i've injuried it is below 20 in the past 2 years. Maybe this is just a problem i'll have to live with. On the other hand if we have a draft mayeb i can site it as a reason not to go unrelated: i have atheletes foot, boy is that annoying to top off the discomfort im having already

What kind of doctor are you seeing. I wouldn't ask my pediatrician if I was fine to play sports. I would go ask someone who specializes in sports medicine.

Pacaveli: Have they done MRI's on you? Xrays can only show so much, but MRI's can show tendon and ligament issues. Your ankle tendons probably need reconditioning/strengthening so that they can support you properly. Just because you're active doesn't mean they're strong. Do the MDs realize your history? Your frequency of issues? Do they seem to take you seriously? Even in posting, you are speaking as if you don't want to make it a big deal. Make it one - it's your body, and you have to rely on it, thus it's in your best interests to get the help you need to rehab those ankles. They don't HAVE to be weak.

i agree with Willtravel... absolutely brace the ankle... i rolled my ankle a few years back and kept on running on it... it's never been the same since, i should have braced it better and given it more rest. Try to rest it. and look into an orthopedic brace. Maybe something like this air brace for athletes: http://www.ankleshop.com/airsport.htm sweetpea

well i was in physical therapy for about 3 -4 months after about the 6th time i did it a couple of summers ago. it didn't seem to help much, it used to be a big deal to me, thats why i did the physical therapy 3-5 times a week, and did exercises they gave me at home for 3 months afte rleaving the PT. But it just never seemed to get any stronger.
i can't rmeeber if i ever did get an MRI i might have not sure on that. I probably should go get one, maybe i need surgery or something serisous to repair this, i sure hope not though edit: could i have the same problem that NBA player grant hill had. Not sure on the specifics but i know he had a really messed up ankle
