What are they using for safaries these days?

I was thinking about this yesterday and today. That most of the qualities of the old land rovers are gone and that they have turned into expensive cars that have none of the old qualities. So then I though well what about Hummer's well the same is there they have the name and appeal but they are so expensive and filled with leather that this also makes no sense. So what are they using these days if they have to buy a new vechicle for a safarie?

I think that Toyota still builds Land Cruisers overseas that are tough as nails.

Can you buy a tough as nails safari vehicle in North America? I think that the region specific production standards would not be the same.

My grandparents went on Safari in Africa recently and I'm pretty sure they were riding around in an old-school Land Rover. I think they are pretty careful to keep the old ones up and running, so buying new ones shouldn't be an issue for a while. On top of that, I think either an LR3 or a Jeep Cherokee would get the job done if need be...

A Cherokee would get shredded in the bush. they're using old LR's and Landcruisers. Most new landcruisers don't do so hot either, but I believe the Gelundewagen is used some.

I've been looking on the online sites of toyota and land rover and well.... It seems like they make a few bad ass ones still in forign parts of the world.

I work for a company that sells vehicles to NGO's and other aid organisations. Vehicles that get used much harder than Safari trucks. However, I happen to know that the is very popular. Looks about as boxy as an old Land Rover Defender. Very tough car. I sell the equivalent Nissan, the Patrol, which gets a lot of UN action, not so much safari.

Fun fact: the tail light on the Defender being built today hasn't changed since the late 50's, i think, when it graced the Morris 1000. Also, my dad has a 70's Defender, restored (well, it runs, but it ain't exactly mint...), and the cabin of the low-spec defenders they build today, are basically exactly the same...Toyota LandCruiser 70 series
