I've recovered chair seats (Like rattan or cane back chairs) and that was easy to do...I've never been brave enough to attempt a sofa or a wingback chair, I figure if the chair is good enough for me to want to recover it (and probably spend 100 bucks or so on fabric, tools and stuffing) then I'm better off having a professional do it because I woiuld probably screw it up.
There are a lot of books available on the topic -- checkout your local library for the better homes and gardens book on furniture reupolsering and go thru the instructions... and ask youself realistically if you can do it and even better if you want to do it... Last time I priced having a wing back chair recovered, and that included all new stuffing, and refinishing and staining the wood legs, I was looking at about 400 - 500 dollars. It's not cheap having it professionally done.

Years ago my mom and I recovered a wingback chair using a staple gun. We didn't restuff. We just covered over the previous fabric. Was it worth it? Yes, it was great fun and now a cherished memory. Was it perfect? No. So, if you're not into adventure and the satisfaction from "doing it yourself", then I would strongly suggest you hire a professional.
