Killing Ivy?
 

I've got some ivy growing around my house that needs to die. I want to use chemical means but haven't found an effective herbacide. Roundup didn't touch the stuff and Brush-B-Gone was just as ineffective.

Any suggestions?

Note: I don't want to poison the ground. There are other plants and trees nearby that I want alive. So suggestions like "pour gasoline on it" aren't going to do the trick.

maybe cut it down really really short and then put black plastic bags to block the sunlight... yah... that might work... i dont have any experience with this kinda stuff... but if you block its sunlight...

I've never come accross anything that brush-b-gone couldn't handle(needs multiple applications, make sure it doesn't get washed off in 24 hrs each time). However, if you are going to be getting rid of the ivy, just pull it. Good old fashioned elbow grease. You'd be surprised how easy that stuff will come out once you get into it. A machete can be a huge help. Be sure to wear long pants and sleeves so you don't get eaten alive by critters. If it is poison ivy and it is really a problem, save yourself the itching and have a pro handle it.

It seems like its just garden-variety ivy. Theres nothing poison about it.

I eliminated huge amounts of it by hand. But I want to keep it at bay without doing that again. Some of if grows in places that are pretty hard to reach - between boards, between two fences 18" apart, etc.

I've heard that the leaves have a coating of wax which sheds off the herbicides. Dunno. Maybe I'll try multiple applications of Brush B Gone.

The best thing, is truly to go the extra mile and yank it all out, even out of the hard to reach places. It will come back otherwise. Those places you might consider the napalm route.

looks like you're up in norcal like me, and if your ivy is anything like the stuff around my neighborhood, its gonna be hard to get rid of
i just ceep cutting it back and digging up all the roots a couple of times a year. seems to keep it under control

not sure if you have it in your local store, but a product of the name Crossbow will kill it.

OK, I'll try to find this "Crossbow" of which you speak.

Ashton - I already tried what you suggested. I even went so far as to leave some of the plants newly-cut ends standing, and soaked them with Roundup. I thought this would help get it into the Ivy better.

This stuff just laughs at Roundup. I've never seen anything like it. Frankly, the ivy is kind of scaring me. Maybe its undead.

Ashton - you may have the solution! (bad chemistry pun intended). I used the pre-mixed stuff. I'll try the concentrate.

the Crossbow mentioned above will def. kill it. you want to spray it early in the mourning before the leaves really wax over. Also another product called Scythe. Nasty stuff. you mix it with Roundup, and ive seen plants wilting in as little as 6 hours on a hot day
