Help, My Yard Is Being Overrun By Moles!

I live in a rural area, and my yard looks like a mole ranch. I've tried poison pellets and powder and I can't seem to stop the tunneling. Does anyone know a surefire way to keep my yard being destroyed?

I've seen hoses you hook to your exhust pipe to asphyxiate them but with all the holes in the yard, I envision putting the hole down one hole and seeing the varmints run out of the other.

Any suggestions?

Have you considered the flame thrower "Linkage" over in Weaponry?

You could also try this...

In all seriousness here's a link that should help.

Get Rid of Moles, Gophers & Burrowing Rhodents

Hope this helps...

I don't just want to repel them, I've got a lot of pent-up anger here...

Watch the video of the flame thrower in weaponry....:D That will make you smile as you imagine the little buggers roasting.

Well... you could always watch the movie Caddyshack.. Ok that was a gopher, but moles are the same thing... There's plenty of fun ideas in that movie...

JStrider 03-20-2005 11:15 AM

ive seen this thing online.... its a long hose you stick down one of their holes pump their den full of propane or whatever explosive gas and then you push a button and the end of the hose sparks

THUMP no more moles...

prolly the best bet would be to plug as many holes in your yard as you can and stick a hose down one and either gas em with car exhaust or flood em with a garden hose...

and once you get rid of the ones you have

then get some kind of repellent, if you dont then anything you do will just be a temporary solution

We had a white german shepherd that took care of all our moles for us. He was my brother's g/f's dog, and after they broke-up we ended up with the dog. Too bad we sold him, or I'd loan him to you. :p

My buddy used a 9mm to take on his moles.

It made the neighbors nervous.

peterson's is some of the better poison to use. you may need to get a permit for it though. but the poison that they sell in most stores is worthless.

best bet is to flush out the hole with a hose, stand nearby with a gun. a 22 should do the trick. aim for the head or put a few in so it doesn't suffer too much.

fill the holes you can find with a couple of pounds of dry Ice and cover. CO2 being heaver than air will displace all the oxygen out of the dens, suficating and killing your moles. Dry ice is is dirt cheap about a buck a pound, and its pet friendly. Check you yellow pages typically your local ice house will sell dry ice.

The owner of the company I work for has one of these.....they're alot of fun, until you break a window from the explosion  seriously they are a riot.

*edit* There is a company manufacturing a new "safer" version of this www.rodenator.com

I think you need to think about not just killing the moles, but more broadly as to why they are there in your yard/lawn in the first place. My experiences is the moles are there in your yard tunneling around looking for food. Their food being grubs in the grass. Kill the grubs, Merit or the like from Home Depot and the moles go some place else to feed. Otherwise you kill the moles and then new moles move in to the newly vacated but tasty territory and you start shooting, bombing, poisoning, CO2ing all over again. Quick word on poisoning. Don't!! Someone's pet or kid always finds it!!

I used a comercially available repellant, I believe the active ingredient was castor oil, anyway it worked. I told my neighbors about it and we all did it the same time figuring it would push them a few houses down rather than just one house down. I've heard of electronic thumpers you can put in the ground that will repell them as well. Might attract spice worms though.

Guaranteed to entertain and (eventually) kill all your moles...

bigdaddy19 03-31-2005 12:12 PM

Get a cat. Seriously, everytime one pokes its little head out, BAM! Cat toy.

Growing up I spent quite a bit of time at my grandmother's farm. They used traps. Nasty, inverted, Rube Goldberg things. Mole pokes head up, *SNAP!* No more mole. I was young enough not to have to take care of the aftermath.

These were fairly common too:

Lots of variations out there, some safe.

I have the same problem. I've heard that flooding the holes doesn't work. Also, even if you get rid of the grubs they will still hand around and eat the earthworms. I tried the commercially available sprays and that made the bastards just move around more!! Dammit!!!!

rockogre 04-12-2005 10:52 AM

I routinely use the exhaust from my lawn tractor. It not only kills the tunneler, it kills all the other underground citizens in the complex. I have had a lot of luck with this method. It also keeps poison and traps away from animals and children.

I rigged up pretty cheap, I just went to the auto parts store and got a heater hose that would slip over my exhaust pipe. It's also the way to kill gophers, gets the babies in the spring and fills all tunnells and compartments.

If you pull out the choke a little on the tractor so it smokes, you can often find the other entrance to gopher holes once the smoke starts coming out. This keeps you from gassing complexs that you have already gassed. Just mark em and move on.

Often, it is the next year or so before any more try to homestead on my place.

I wholeheartedly reccomend the rodenator (mentioned above) if you don't want to start fumbling with the right mix of propane and air (it's 4% propane, 96% air, if you're crazy enough to try.) Other solutions include tailpipe hose, homemade smoke bombs (or commercial ones, but not as much fun.)

Get a BB gun and a 12 pack of beer and have some fun

iamnormal 05-06-2005 09:20 PM

I remember talk about useing the castor plant to repel moles from the garden. You can get castor oil at the drug store and spray that around. You could plant castor plants about too.

dman2 05-07-2005 11:41 AM

http://www.news.cornell.edu/photos/mole-rat2.300.JPEG Try grabbing them up by the neck like this one. Pretty scary huh?

fhqwhgads 05-15-2005 08:34 PM

Ok, I downloaded one of those Rodenator videos, and I must say... that looks like a damn good time. I can't justify the expense, and I have some older neighbors with dodgy hearts, so I dunno if it's the solution that I'm looking for. I may just try to find the head mole and negotiate a surrender....

Hard8s 05-16-2005 03:32 PM

You know the scary part about that picture is how many nipples the thing has. That means it can have that many babies, having that many babies, etc.... No wonder we can't get rid of the damn things.

Anexkahn 05-16-2005 11:31 PM

I live on some acerage and we have problems with gophers every spring. We use traps, like this one. Its pretty effective. Clean out the mound of dirt until the hole is actually exposed, set the trap and then lay some loose blades of grass over the hole to let filtered light in. If there is too much light they wont come up, but filtered they will come see whats up and bam.

If you have a large cat population in the area i strongly recommend attaching your traps to a piece of small rope and then trying the rope around a fence post or drive a tent stake and secure it to that. Otherwise, lazy cats will stop by to take your dying victim and liberate your 6 dollar trap in the process.

Thats a naked mole-rat. Unless you live in African then you don't have to worry about them.

black94lt1 05-20-2005 12:31 PM

I have them bad too, and I have thought a few time about the rodenator. At this time, I try to push down the tunnels and wait for movement, and then get them with the shovel. When I was in college, and we wer trapping them for research, we would did a hole in the tunnel deep enough for a coffee can and place it below the tunnel depth, so that the next time they tunneld through, they would fall in the can and not be able to get out.
