Guitar/Amp VS. Computer monitor
 

Kay folks, when I play my guitar in front of my monitor I get
"the hum", that is to say my pickups are receiving the 75 hz radiated signal from my monitor. After this it is of course amplified my amp. I know this is a VERY common problem that can be fixed wih a filter but I'm unsure how to get a 75 hz filter and the circuit needed to intigrate it. Thanks folks you all are so smart, I may have just found a new home!

You could try an equalizer pedal and fiddle with the settings until the hum is gone.

I would try putting some shielding (you can purchase stuff that looks like aluminum foil w/adhesive on one side from most electronic shops) on the inside bottom of the pickguard, around the pickups. It doesn't seem like adding extra circuitry is the best idea when the problem can be taken care of more easily... just my 2cents.

I just back up from my comp a little and turn down the vol nob on my guitar or just turn some of the pickups off.

water is a natural insulator.
spruce your room up with a few water filled liquor bottles.
grande sized for best results.

change your monitor's refresh rate to something other than 75. 60, for example. Wouldn't recommend leaving it there (eyestrain), but it'd be fine for while you're playing.

you probably have single-coil pickups. in my opinion shielding is your best bet.stewart-macdonald in ohio sells shielding paint that i have used with good success.good luck.

hmmm.... i get the same kind of hum when playing/recording my les paul (w/ humbuckers).... the only thing i've done so far that works is to play perpendicular to the monitor. a 90 degree angle is best, and not parallel to the monitor.

Why are you playing to your monitor? Why not just turn it off while you are playing?

If you're only using the computer to read tabs, just play at a low volume so it's not noticable, and maybe roll back your tone control a bit. Like others have said, a good shilding job might help, but if you're not having any noise problems when playing with a band, it's probably not neccecary. I'd definately get a good shilding job before you do any recording, though.

Grab a notch filter or an LCD panel if you want it truly gone.

I get the same problem...it doesn't bother me much though. I didn't even know about the 75 hz thing. Interesting stuff.

I always find it funny when I use the wheel on my mouse and my guitar amp makes a noise each time...

Wouldn't changing the refresh rate to 60hz just give you a 60hz hum?

I always thought the cause of hum was bad power shielding, it'd then be a 60hz hum, or 50hz if you're in the uk or australia or somewhere with 240 volts.

if you are recording, try turning off the monitor while you record, and when you are done recording, use a mute pedal and mute the guitar while you turn the monitor back on

Try playing at different angles - ie: rotating on your ass :D There's usually a decent enough "clean spot" that's acceptable for noise. aside from that... get an LCD monitor :D

are you using single coil pickups? I've never noticed it with humbuckers..

i usually plug my guitar into the Line IN or Mic IN input on my puter. my soundcard has quite a few guitar effects emulations if i ever need them ..

Yea, I've humbuckers its an (Ibeenhad) Ibanez JS-100 I aso noticed the other day it will do it in front of the TV, so I guess I'm probably looking at a grounding issue. Oh Hell I don't know mabye its because the green ink in my dragon tattoo is clashing with the red paint on the guitar. SCREW IT anyone wanna buy a guitar and amp?????
