The funk from within the sink!
How in the world do i get rid of my very stinky garbage disposal smell? I have no idea what the funk is, but it comes from with-in the garbage disposal. Is there something to pour in there or mabey a certian cleaner to use. ohhhhhh lordy it stinks!

Try this:
UNPLUG the disposal before you do anything! http://www.tipking.com/tip/3780.html If your hand is small enough, you can use a sponge soaked in vinegar to clean up under that rubber splashgaurd, too. |
Dump in lemon slices and ice cubes at the same time. Run wiothout water.
|
Probably not sufficient for a deep funky smell, but you can also let your coffee grounds sit in the disposal for a few hours.
|
grinding up dry rice in it will totally clean the blades, then just rinse with water and the filth is gone. It works on coffee bean grinders, so it may just work on the garbage diposal.
|
Lemons, whole lemons. Always done the trick for me.
Drop them in and let the disposal chew them up. Lemon juice on your hands is also a great way to get rid of garlic and onion smells that seep into your skin when you slice and mince them. -bear |
I have always used bleach, It will kill the smell of about anything, and get rid of the bacteria that is growing and causing the smell in the first place. You need to get rid of the source not cover up the smell....
|
You usually can remove the upper rubber lip off of the unit, then scrub the crap out of it... then do the above lemon tricks!
|
Usually I just run the disposal with just water for a little and then put a little bit of bleach in....
|
Any citris is good.
A box of baking soda put in there with some water will help too. |
Fill it about half full with ice, then pour in some paking soda and more ice. Turn it on and your problems will be over.....
|
baking soda will help, but it takes time.

Steps: 1. Inspect the black rubber cover that fits in the disposal. Sometimes bits of garbage collect under the flaps and create a smell. 2. Clean the rubber cover, if necessary. If yours lifts out, remove it and clean away debris with a scrub brush and warm, soapy water. If your rubber cover is installed permanently, lift up each flap and clean it with soapy water and an old toothbrush. 3. Deodorize the disposal. Cut a lemon in half and drop the fruit and a handful of baking soda into the disposal. Turn on the cold water faucet and then the disposal. The unit will clean itself as it grinds up the mixture. |
I've always jsut chucked a lemon in there with steaming hot water.
Works for me. |
Use Drain-O and let sit for 30 min., just to loosen up the gunk. Flush the drain then follow with the lemon treatment mentioned above.
|
Replace the rubber guard and clean real well underneath it. The disposal just twists off, don't mess with the screws those are only for holding the sink flange in place.
|
I say combine all of the above. Filling the pipes with bleach will kill all the bacteria in the draintrap...but you are stuck with a sink that still smells bad...just not funky. After disinfecting, clean your rubber guard, and then use the ice and lemon to clean your disposal blades and give yourself a lovely citrus smell.
