Psych Forum Continues.. So what do you do? - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Well I guess we should continue our discussion regarding the forum, according to the person who told me to do this, in order for us to get our own forum we need a lot of support and have to start a few of our own strings. It makes sense to have our own forum, however, and I think this idea will only up the ante for this place (which is great already). Where else can you ask questions about credit cards, get handyman help, etc all in one place?

So I pose this question.. since some of you gave a brief description of what you're doing - why don't we give more detail to the group. Why did you go into the psychology or related fields? What do you hope to end up doing once you're done with school (if you're still in it)? What population do you work with? What population would you like to work with? How long have you been at your current job?

I have worked for a mental hospital for 2 years while doing my undergrad studies in social work. During that time I also did my internship at the child psych unit at a major hospital in NE Ohio. After I graduated I got a job working for a foster care agency that has an outpatient program for juvenile offenders. The offenders, while getting tx, live in our foster homes. I am currently attending Case Western with 6 mos left in order to get my master's degree in social work - yes social work. I would like to open my own counseling agency and working independently after I recieve my independent licensure. I also would like to work more in the area of art therapy as I have had the oppurtunity to dabble in it at my current job.

I find that social work ties into a lot of values that psychology was founded on believe it or not. The main idea, however, that social work classes attempted to push was the strengths perspective and looking at the entire environmental factors that effect an individual. I prefer psychodynamic and cognitive theories myself.

Why I went into social work? Not sure honestly. Switched majors about 5 times in undergrad and landed in social work. It just felt like a good fit and I'm pretty happy with the amount of doors open once I finish my master's program at Case.

So what about the rest of you??

Again, I think a psychology forum is a great idea (even if we just have a big thread, that would be cool).

I'm currently pursuing my Ph.D. in school psychology. It's pretty exciting to be involved in a field that is changing so much. Most people think of school psychologists as people who test kids in schools and place them into various educational programs. That role is changing reflecting the needs of children within schools. I am now working at a school that draws from a low SES community. Much of my activies involve developing and implementing behavior modification plans, facilitating therapy groups, and developing academic intervention plans. I also work for one of my professors as a graduate assistant. It doesn't pay much, but I get all my tuition waived which is great.
I went into school psychology because I liked working with kids, but I also enjoed psychology. I personally prefer the social/cognitive/behavioral approaches.
