I bought a DirecTV dish off eBay for $20. Today I wired my Netgear WG111 802.11g USB dongle onto the focus using some bent coathanger wire, got on my friend's roof, and picked up 12 access points using my laptop. The device is incredibly LoS reliant, so you have to have really good aim and practically no obstacles. However, once you get LoS your connection is really strong, even from half a mile away in suburbs. These are reported to have up to 10-12 MILE range with pure line of sight.

Have you guys heard about the pringles can trick? I first heard about it from some professors on campus that were monkeying around with the wireless network on campus.
You can check out a good article on it here: http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/448 This website talks about cantennas also, and how they compare to pringles can antennas. http://www.optonline.net/Call_For_He...098863,00.html |
