Dogs need to be cage raised. No question. Anything less is simply cruel.
A cage becomes the dog's sole and exclusive sanctuary. They will never defile their sanctuary unless ill. They must sleep in the cage every night and be placed in the cage when left alone in the home. When allowed to emerge from the cage (when you get up in the morning or come home throughout the day) you must always take the dog for a walk or allow them to go outside to take care of business. The cat shit I have no advice for. Except my dog used to LOVE to snack on whatever goose shit he could find. Used to sicken me, but he seems to have grown out of it. -bear
