Obviously, Led Zeppelin has used it. Its been on a bad company cd I bought. And I was just wondering if they both were borrowing the image from somewhere else. Seems familliar somehow, but I cant put my finger on it... Idle curiosity, but if anyone has any ideas, let em fly. |
From www.buckeye-web.com/ifmtl3.html
The famous Swan Song symbol that Zeppelin adopted as the logo for their record label was borrowed from an 1851 oil-on-canvas painting by William Rimmer entitled "Evening Fall Of Day." The figure in the painting is the Greek sun god Apollo. The painting is not, as some people would have you believe, of Icarus or Daedalus. These two are also figures from Greek mythology. Daedalus is, according to legend, supposed to have crafted a set of wings from feathers and wax for himself and Icarus which they could use to escape from their prison on Crete to freedom in Greece. Unfortunately, Icarus being the younger of the two thought it might be a lark to fly a little higher, and flew too close to the sun which melted his wings and he plunged to his death in a sea, which is still known as the Icarian sea. Icarus' first flight was also his swan song. Daedalus also designed the labyrinth on Crete for King Mino's minotaur, which was the reason for his imprisonment, because he alone knew the secrets of the labyrinth. Look here www.zepfanman.com/swansong.html for the picture. It's actually called Evening (The Fall of Day). |
Wow, thanks man. I expected people to be stumped
|
from what i understand its what one of them saw when they were trippen on some bad acid, not a good idea to do but still he might of barrowed it from someone else but still its been part the band sence they've started...

|
so looks like they changed it just enough, but its still the same one. Cool man, thanks for all the info.

You guys don't go for head scratching trivia...you like that full on brain-itching, eye-crossing stuff!
Good post! |
The reason it was on a Bad Company album was because they were put out by Swan Song Records.
|
Ahhhh, gotcha, I was wondering about that.
|
Thanks for the link johnnymysto. All this time I thought it was Icarus as a round about way of saying nothing but "crashing"(death) was going to stop them from getting "higher"(financially, popularity, sexually, and hallucinogenically(sp?)) than anyone before them.
