House got SKUNKED (literally)... HELP!
HELLO FELLOW TFPers!
Does anyone have experience with cleansing their house from skunk scent? I just bought a new house that came with a skunk family living under the back porch. Long story short.. this week the neighbor's dog spooked one of them and the skunk did his stuff. The entire house (inside) stinks horribly. I mean, this is the worst smell one can come home to. When you open the front door of the house you are greeted by the odor slapping you in the face and every single room on all three levels just stinks like skunk now. I made sure there are no more skunks under the porch and sealed off their entrance. So they will relocate, but their smell is horendous!!!!! How do I get rid of it??????? Will I need to replace carpets, drapes, etc??? Thanks for all advice and good wishes.. |

We feel for you. Try to have Thanksgiving at a relatives house.
I hope these help. I got this from Google, do not have a skunk fetish! http://www.allsands.com/HowTo/skunkodorpets_wcl_gn.htm http://doityourself.com/pest/skunkodor.htm You need to break down or dissolve the oil in skunk scent. Inside House Wash affected wall, floor, etc. areas with water containing either chlorine bleach or vinegar (acetic acid) or Use a commercial odor-removing compound such as: "Skunk-off" aerosol; get through Vet Clinic, dog supply stores, dog kennels or pet shops. "Nil-Odor" made by Dow Chemical; follow directions and put couple drops in water, and put on furnace filter to circulate air through; (you can also put on dogs as directed) "Odor-Away" either liquid (use few drops) or aerosol. Rexall "C-D Deodorant" aerosol, can spray furnishings, drapes, etc. These odor-removers act to break down the oil and so remove the odor or neutralize it. Spraying with aerosol or putting drops around will neutralize odor in air generally; may still smell for awhile as you put your nose right down in drapes, carpets, etc. but will gradually dissipate.

I actually sell a product that uses natural enzymes to destory organically caused odors, smoke, and stains on contact. It is so powerful it is guaranteed to even get rid of Skunk Smells. It's a non-toxic hypoallergenic and biodegradable spray...
Please Email me at webmarkable@unfranchise.com and I'll send you info on how you can get it.

Nobody has mentioned this, but you need to contact the local humane society. They can help you relocate the skunk family so this does not happen again. You may even wait to finish the great clean-up until you've moved the buggers out.

When my parents dog had a run-in with a skunk they called up the vet and he gave them this solution:
Deskunker 1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) 1 teaspoon liquid soap Worked great and is mild enough to use directly on a pet. Hope this helps...

This happened to me a long time ago when I still lived with my parents. A skunk had sprayed outside my bedroom window. The room stunk for about a month before we decided to just get the room repainted. Having the room repainted fixed the smell, but still closets and other nearby small spaces that were not repainted smelled like skunk for at least another 2 months.

my two cents:
1) call your insurance company asap and get them to recommend some restoration companies (eg like those that help after fires- getting smoke out of drapes, etc) 2) get, rent, borrow, steal an ozone machine - ask some dry cleaners in your area if you need more info. turn it on, then leave your house for 2 days. |
