I usually shave in the shower with soap. I bought one of those fancy mirrors that doesn't fog up. I also brush my teeth in the shower. Now if they would just invent a toilet in the shower I could have one stop shopping.

I'm another Mach 3 user who was considering going to a straight razor for simplicity and savings. When I read up on straight razor use and care though, it sounds even more involved and time consuming. Having to buy the leather strop to whet the razor, and then the right polishing cream and from what I read it takes 24-48 hours for a straight razor to get it's edge back (though they used a special term for it) after use. Guess I'll just stick with the Mach 3 for now, but I'm considering a Norelco wet razor.

I've been using a Norelco dry razor for a couple years now. i'm a last minuite kind of guy so I usually end up shaving in the car on the way to work. Gives me something to do while sitting at red lights. It gives a good shave and is very little fuss.

i suppose i am blessed with good tough skin, just a dual blade razor and a bit of shaving gel does the job for me. Not sure about what will save the blades on a razor, but it sounds like some interesting ideas here.

I also use a Mach 3, but even with the old single or double blades, what ensures a nice, smooth shave without irritating my skin is letting the shaving cream soak in for 5 minutes before shaving. I have a pretty thick beard, and I hate shaving, but that usually keeps me nick free.

As a male with very sensitive skin on the face, let me make two reccomendations...first, use Edge Pro-gel extra sensitive. It comes in a silver can. Also, apply the cream and wait 3 minutes before shaving. This gives the menthol in the cream time to soften the skin and the hairs allowing for a closer, smoother shave. It works, I do it myself!

Still good as new.

hey, what is the deal with using a straight razor? is it just as easy to shave? can you slice your throat on accident?

merkerguitars 08-11-2003 08:23 PM

Most razor blades are made out of a really shitty stainless that will actually rust...but does take some time to do so....I always wear mine out before they rust...

Ditto here, except the so-called "no-fog" mirror always fogs up anyway. But then, I'm all about really hot showers. I just wipe it off with my hand ocasionally. (the mirror)

I agree with sipsake. The best way to shave is with shaving soap and a good quality shaving brush. Also, make sure to soak your face with really hot water. This softens the hair. I struggled with shaving until I used this method. I can't believe how martketing affects us so much. Everybody I know uses these new shaving gels and then complains about how bad it is. Try www.theartofshaving.com for some good products. Just because it is new doesn't mean it is better.

I alwqays wanted to try a straight razor but have been a bit leery of cutting myself really bad much as I cut myself with a regular razor, thought about elec razors too but, they are soo expensive, the good ones it seems.

Mongolguy 08-19-2003 03:36 PM

Actually I find it easier to shave with a straight razor. The blade is about 4in long, and if I think about it I can do it in about 5 strokes. 7 if I lose the mustache. But if you're thinking of sneezing while doing it, Don't.

I like the professional doing the straight razor--my barber.

For every other time I shave, I use a braun electric. At first I didn't think I was getting as close a shave, but after a while my face adjusted to not having a layer of skin being cut off (with a blade) and to me it seems just as close as the mach 3.

Mach 3 Turbo is a rip off, stick with the regular Mach 3. A stupid little strip that does nothing isnt worth the extra cash.

As for getting the best shave and getting the most out of your blades, here`s what I`ve discovered.

Get up in the morning and have your shower! Do everything likescrubbing and shampooing first. By the time you`re done that your skin and facial hair have softened up. Dont bother with the soap or the gel and just shave with the blade and water. Make sure that your shower head is hitting where you are shaving so as to keep the blade clog free and to lubricate.

Now when you`re finished use some aftershave.

I have extremely thick facial hair, and the individual wiskers are massive in their diameter. If this works for me it`s gotta work for you. Plus this method has the added bonus of not getting soap or gel clogged in your pores and causing shaving zits.

you, sir, are a genius.
this is exactly my thing.

and as for that shower toilet idea... i´m certain its under construction somewhere...

thanks for the tip dirtbagceo - mach3 sure is exxy!!

tehblaed 09-02-2003 07:31 AM

At my house, shower = toilet. Not for the twos, though. Nasty.

So on a semi-related note, who pisses in the shower?

Asshole Lover 09-02-2003 04:53 PM

i may try that...thanks

ComfortablyNumb 09-03-2003 02:10 PM

I recommend King of Shaves shaving oil. It gives a smoother shave than foam + you can see what you are doing
