Does anyone know the name of the branch of christianity that doesnt believe in...
the divinity oif Jesus, but believes in everything else.
(and say believes that Jesus was a prophet rather than a literal embodiment of God) |

I am sure there is another name, starting Arm or Ar something... Ive been searching all over Google. I think maybe it is a historical sect rather than one that is active today.

Arianism, that was what I was looking for. Thanks!

No problemo. I didn't know there were so many aspects of Christianity. I had fun delving around. :)

islam?..well techinically, its an extension of judaism and christianity and claims jesus as a prophet rather than the son of god or god incarnate. so it could also fit within what you're looking for.
i did some reading on Arianism many years ago now, and found that many of its beliefs fit within the tenants of islam. just thought id throw that in out of interest. did you find what you were looking for SF? |
I came here to mention Arianism, but see that it's already been done.
I like the concept in may ways - that he was just a man, but bringing a message from god. I wonder if history would have been significantly different during the middle ages if the total divinity of Christ had been rejected? |
From what i can remember, Arian had boycotted the Council of Nicea which is where the concept of the trinity was born.
I wonder how it would have changed the course of history had he attended. |
arianism became one of many strands lumped together as gnosticism after nicea.

One can also imagine a situation in which Mohamed was seen by the (Arian) Church as a scholar not an enemy. Almost reminds me of the Amis novel "The Alteration" that jumps off from the point of Martin Luther being made Pope Germanicus and the Anglican/Roman split in the Church not happening. Is anyone brave enough to write a counter-factual history in which Mohammed is elected "Pope Orientus I" in an Arian Church, the Caliphate and Christendom overlap and the Dark Ages never happen? |
