Finding the age of whisky

Aloha, my father used to be a large spirit drinker, but not anymore due to health concerns. He has bottles and bottles of Whisky lurking in the drinks cabinet, all saying 'aged 8/10/12/8 billion years', but since they've likely been in there a few years i was wondering if there is a way to date the bottle to get an accurate idea of when it was produced? No doubt some are worth a fair bit by now.

I can supply label information if required.

Cheers

EU regulations state that all alcoholic (and non) beverage bottles must carry a lot number in case of complaints and recalls. The trick is to find the number! It's usually on the neck of the bottle somewhere, but never on the label (in case the label gets wet and is lost). If you can't find it, then it's most likely to be under the capsule enclosing the neck and cork.

Once you've found the number, contact the distillery directly and ask them!

Image below is the lot number on a bottle of Highland Park I had nearby...

Important to note, once whiskey goes into glass, the ageing stops. The "age" is how long it spent in wood.

If it spends 10 years in the wood, and then 10 years in the glass, it's a 10 year old whiskey from 10 years ago, not a 20 year old whiskey.
