Solid wood fire logs?
I have a Preway Built-In Fireplace that burns "solid wood only." In the fireplaces in my native country in Eastern Europe you could burn pretty much any kind of wood in them, but I am under the impression that you should only burn the prepackaged kind in this sort of cheap fireplace. Is that a correct assumption? And what exactly is "solid wood" when it comes to fire logs? Never heard of liquid wood, all been solid when I've burned them.
The local grocery store sells these prepackaged logs for 20 bucks per a pack of six. I was hoping to find out more about what kind of wood I can burn and then shop around, if possible. |
"Solid wood only" means that you don't want to put wood chips, sawdust, particle board, artificial wood, treated or coated wood, charcoal, coal, trash, or anything other than solid wood cut from a tree in there.
Hardwoods are generally better than softwoods or new wood, since they won't "snap" and "pop" as often, so you don't have to worry so much about sparks. Does that make sense? |
I believe its also telling you that you cant use gas logs in it either

Hmm, really need more info to answer the question. Do you know what model# and flue size? Preway went under over 15years ago. Some of their stuff could handle pressed (fake) logs and some could be modified to use vent free gas logs.
Depending on the material in the pressed logs I'd probably feel safer using them then gas logs. But before burning anything in it I make sure the chimney was clear of creosote and or any other hazards. Preway's came with snap together chimney sections that usually used vented cool air as insulation, usually in triple tin style (tin pipe, air space, tin pipe, air space and a final section of tin.) Any portion of that chimney leaks or is cracked you could be asking for serious problems. |
They are telling you not to use those fake logs you get in a package. Those things burn much hotter than hardwood.
The prepackaged type you speak of is precisely what you SHOULD NOT burn as it isn't solid wood. |
