Brocolli stuck in my food pipe OUCH!!!

Today I was eating some chinese food, and a piece of it kind of fell down my throat! Do you know when you eat your bread without chewing and it slowly slides down in a big glob?
It was like that but soooo, soooo, sooo much more painful. As soon as I realized it was lodged I thought uh oh. It felt sharp. I began going into strange convulsions around my chest and upper back area. My arms ached horribly! I was panicking because something odd was happening. The food was trying to vomit, but it was being stuck. I thought of my breathing and the potential for choking on my vomit or something like that.

So I made a move. I quickly ran into my mothers bedroom, where she was sleeping, and told her Mom I'm choking! She shot into action. It was hilarious in hines sight. She went from 0% to 200% in a second. I was able to tell her what was going on because I wasn't really choking. Still the pain was so fucking intense.

This is where an amazing feat of evolution happened. My body began to create this very heavy lubricated saliva by the litre. I had this natural instinct to go outside and counciously do this maneuver, which is sort of like forcing oneself to burp. It was not vomiting, what I would consider vomiting, but much like it.
I musta been bent over, drooling all over the place, heaving, and spitting out crumped chunks of broccoli for about 10 minutes.

I can't stress more how painful it was. Anyway :) Just my 2 cents for the day, and chew your food damnit!

Well I'm sure glad you didn't choke. I never experienced that flood of saliva but I know from my more minor near-choking incidents that it can hurt and scare you. Did it make you realize how important it is to learn some basic heimlich maneuvers?...obviously to use on someone else choking, not yourself...it made me learn it.

When I first saw the partial title of your post "brocolli stuck in my food" it reminded me of when I was a young boy and used to make forests of broccoli in my mashed potatoes and roll the giant boulders of peas through the forest...and then I ate the whole world.

Even worse is when you accidentally swallow something after misjudging just how hot it is, and it gets stuck halfway down while SCALDING hot. Feels like someone set your chest on fire.

^ That hurts. I have done that often and it feels like you are burning from the inside out.

I've done that with a corn chip and it felt like it was slicing though all the way down.

BadNick, I learned the H(howeveryouspellit)maneuver just a little while ago. I noticed you said "obviously not on yourself," but I also learned how to do it on myself. Basically its the exact same spot that you would do it on someone els, and you just thump that area against something like wooden post.

Oh god the corn chip hurt too!~! I have done that before.

I never swallowed anything too hot before though. I have swallowed a icecube before, that was kind of painful. But this time with the brocolli was special because of how involved my body became in getting rid of the blockage.

Important safety tip: the Heimlich maneuver is only useful in situations where the airway is blocked. Injury may occur if it is used improperly. For that matter, injury may occur when it is used properly, but as death generally occurs if it is not applied in those situations, injury is generally preferable.

I've never had this happen to me. When I was a wee lad, I came across a set of tools to help me avoid these very situations. In some circles, they're called teeth.

When I was a kid i choked on a big piece of bacon fat. It was long and I didn't chew it well enough. My parents freaked out and didn't really know what to do. Finally I decided I had to just reach into my mouth and pull it out. That did the trick but it sure scared the crap out of me and my parents.

I had the same thing happen to me, had to pull it out and it was all chewed up and long. Really disgusting and freaked me out.

I too have had this happen to me on a few occasions, every time, I choked on lamb. However I did learn something valuable. coca-cola is your friend. The combination of the bubbles and the foam makes the chunk seal the passage better, and hence easier to dislodge. In addition if that does not work in short order, coke is so caustic that it quickly partially dissolves the chunk of food so that it can go down.

This happened for the first time after I had some dental work done, and I think that my chewing efficiency has been decreased.
