Strange Famous

When I type (not when I write) I often write the wrong word, and put something which sounds similar but is not at all related

(ie - a second ago I meant to type "at least" and actually typed "unless")

Could this be a type of dyslexia? My cousin has that, but I can spell ok - not perfect, but not that bad.

I sometimes do that too. It's not a disorder, it's just inattention and hyper-trained ninja typing skills.

Typing is mindless and the fingers are not as quick as the thought.
I find myself switching words most often when I'm tired or pressed for thyme.

I think that's pretty common. On the forums I visit, I frequently see dropped words, wrong words, and even the occasional extra word. Your typing and thinking get a bit out of sync if you type really fast or think ahead too much.

Nothing to worry about.

Not to worry about. Often certain phrases or patterns or words appear and your brain just sends the pattern out without you actually thinking about it.

I do it all the time, I will also cut off the last letter of some words if, without the letter it is still a word.

I type be for 'bet' a lot, I just corrected in a post a You instead of a Your, that sort of thing.

Its not that I think the wrong word, but my brain types the wrong one. It boils down to to much time at a keyboard I think.

I often type "is is" instead of "it is"--among similar things.

I only do this when I type, never when I write.

I hear they're going to do away with the QWERTY keyboard. I'm not sure what that will do to our brains.

Better brush up on keyboard maintenance, and make out a list of stores that deal with used computer parts. You should be able to plan ahead and have a QWERTY keyboard for the rest of your life. You might even have some to pass down to future generations if you play your cards right. Just hope that USB remains a backward compatible standard.

They apparently designed the QWERTY keyboard to slow typists down to prevent machines from bungling up. Don't you want to type faster?

This sounds like one of those stories you hear from the onion.

At my peak I was typing 85 wpm, and I can't see that getting any faster unless they hook up a mind interface.

So I don't know how 'they' are but as long as there is a free market their will be plenty of qwerty keyboards.

From reading the site, basically it boils down to people are better at hunt and pecking, ahhh progress.

You know there are those who go over 120 wpm, right? You wouldn't want to add 30-40 wpm? I guess it depends on what you need typing for. If you type a lot, I'm sure you wouldn't mind a technological edge such as a more logical keyboard layout.

I was being facetious about the QWERTYs. I'm sure they'll always be available. Just like VHS tapes...and fax machines.

EDIT: Where'd you find that alphabetically ordered keyboard? Have you looked at the Dvorak one yet?

Keyboard layouts should vary depending on the language, even if they share the same alphabet. There are certain arrangements that make more sense depending on word structures. It is a study of language forms. This is the progress you should be focusing on.

I worked as a transcriptionist for a while and now much of the work I do involves typing up test documentation - I'm well over 100 with QWERTY. Dvorak keyboards seem like a waste of time, to me.

I'm nowhere near 100wpm. I would use a Dvorak to up my typing time and efficiency (accuracy). I tend to use a lot of backspace for letters not on the home row.

I completely forgot about the Dvorak keyboard, and maybe it is in fact superior. Inertia alone though will keep qwerty a standard, I've never seen a Dvorak keyboard for sale in the US on a shelf, and I'm not sure how QWERTY is on its way out. Unless they start to teach Dvorak at schools and Universities switch to them, you won't see much reason to change. Plus my guess is its pretty much impossible to be good on both at the same time so even if you learn it you will have legacy machines for quite a while keeping you stuck in QWERTY.

I wouldn't mind one of these, just wish it was for the left hand.

Kinda weird if you ask me that it has the U and I out there by themselves. Also, I am not left handed, which is why I use it with my left hand, since I could then type stuff into the computer, and continue to write down important notes.
