Need to create clip from DVD - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

I have a presentation on Wednesday and want to show a clip from a DVD. The problem is, the clip is in the middle of two chapters and I don't want to bother fast-forwarding during my presentation to get there. Is there a program that allows me to copy the clip from video from a DVD into an AVI file?

I've played around with some versions of that only copy the whole thing into an AVI file and that doesn't do me any good. I've also seen versions that have a giant watermark in the middle, which is also no good. I think using an AVI file would be the best because then I can embed it into my Powerpoint and launch it from there. I suppose an alternative would be to use the clunky VCR to record the TV while I play the DVD clip, but that would be a last resort type thing.

To get the clip try using this program first: http://filehippo.com/download_dvdshrink/ - DVDshrink
It has the ability to backup DVDs and has a simple editing feature to select certain selections for backup. When you want to export tell it to backup and export as a hard disc folder. Go to that folder\Video_ts and look for the VOB.
Details: DVDshrink > Open Disc > Reauthor > DVD Browser > Main Movie > "Title" gets dragged to DVD structure > Compression Settings > Remove audio and subtitle elements you don't want > Set Start/End Frames > Select the beginning and end... > Backup! > Hard Disc Folder

Install DivX pack, http://www.divx.com/?lang=en , make sure to install everything. You will be using Dr. Divx. Just drop and drag the VOB into the input file box. All default setting should be fine. It will make a DIVX file. From my experience, you can just interchange DIVX with AVI and it works fine in Windows Media Player.

Google "DVD ripper" or "DVD to AVI"

I got a freeware one a while back that I used to extract a small clip from a DVD. I can't remember the exact name for the software right now. If I find it I'll post it. I do remember that the UI was really ugly and not very friendly at all.

I think I had to rip the entire DVD to an AVI and then use a video editor (I use Vegas for that) to extract the clip I wanted.

This is the part that I need most help with. I think I can get a copy of the DVD clip, though I still can't find one that doesn't place a watermark in the middle of the screen, but I have no idea how to edit it. Once I can get that into an AVI I'm golden.

Re read my post. DVD Shrink has a feature to select certain clips.

DVD shrink will give you the scenes you need as a VOB, then you drop the VOB into Dr Divx. The "Doctor" doesn't add watermarks either.

Well, this was almost a waste of time; my group member's decided against using the clip. At least now I know how to make one for the future.

What I ended up using was DivxAuthor, which was a free program. It was really easy to use and let me display subtitles.

Displaying subtitles is a really beneficial ability, actually... I ought to figure that one out for my presentation coming up.
