Anybody know anything about hidden cameras?
Hi,
I have reason to suspect my roommate might be stealing from me and I plan to move out. One of the options I've been considering is installing a hidden camera in my room. They're easy to find, but are any of them good? X10 appears to be basically crap, what about the others, like www.concealedcameras.com? Thanks |

you don't need high quality to catch your roommate stealing stuff. Just get a basic camera. Normal video cameras are small enough now that you could just get one of those and hide it in a plant or something. No point getting one of the "security" cameras that aren't as good - and then you could use the regular camera for other stuff as well.

if it's in a room with a computer, get a webcam. at my last job, we had someone use things around the office without putting it back where it was suposed to be so we used a webcam pointed at the specific section. Then we got a software that detects pixel change in the video so if the camera changed enough, it would start recording for a set number of mins or secs.
Once it's recorded, you have it on your computer. plus, webcams are now super cheap to buy and the quality is allright. some are even wireless and small enough to hide in anything. motion detection is what you should be looking for if you go the webcam method. like this: http://ask-leo.com/can_i_use_my_webc...y_monitor.html

That'll probably do me just fine, thanks!
After a friend advised me to get renter's insurance, I'm no longer too worried about my stuff (at least what I can replace with $$$). However, maybe for future reference - if I were to look for hidden cameras, and I'm talking wireless pinhole cameras (ie. serious spy sh!t) does anybody have any experience with those? |

I do. They're shit. You wouldn't like it. The video quality is generally pretty crappy. To get good quality -the kind the REAL spies use, not the bullshit they sell in the online "spy stores" you will have to pony up thousands of dollars, and probably have a security clearance
