How to fix a slow-motion tape deck?

Heya.

The tapedeck in my car is pretty old. It only plays tapes, no stereo or anything fancy. Yesterday it started playing everything in a decreased tempo. Has this happened to anyone? Is there an easy fix? or is it just old and needs replacing?

Thanks,

spotila

Man, it sounds pretty old, especially since there's no stereo. For the money you might set things up so you can use an IPod. then you'd have a unit to use anywhere plus the car. A 4 gig unit goes for around $250 us. I love mine and use it on my car as well as with ear buds.

Or worst case, install a CD player. You'll love the sound...

It's most likely the drive belt has gone bad or/and needs cleaning.
To replace the drive belt you need to remove the tapedeck and open it up to get the old belt out to find what its size is.
I don't know of a good place to get the belt so do a web search.

With the tape deck apart check the capstan/flywheel to see if the bushing is warn too.

For cleaning it use cotton swabs and denatured alcohol. The main things that need cleaning is the capstan, pinch roller, and head.
