All Irish Humor Isn't Funny...this one is!

Tim Kelly was walking through a dim passageway when someone spoke to him. "Good evening, Kelly," said the muffled figure. "Don't ye be knowin' your old friend Grogan any more?"

Kelly stared at Grogan. His face was a patchwork of bandages and adhesive plaster. One arm was in a sling and he leaned on a crutch. "Saints!" cried Kelly. "Was ye hit by a train, Grogan, or did ye merely jump from the trestle?"

"It could've been both," said Grogan, "considerin' the feel of it. But the truth is, I was in bed with Murphy's wife when Murphy himself comes in with a murtherin' big shillelagh in his hand, and the inconsiderate creature beat the livin' bejazus outa me."

"He did indeed," said Kelly. "But couldn't ye defend yourself, Grogan? Hadn't ye nothin' in your own hand?"

"Only Mrs. Murphy's arse," said Grogan. "It's a beautiful thing in itself, but not worth a damn in a fight."

well, it is true that it is hard to use an ass in a fight, but how does it make the joke funny?

I have to admit that there may be a bit of this joke that is 'inside' humour? not too sure...

maleficent 04-11-2005 09:28 AM

it's really not inside humor... maybe the brogue makes it harder to understand...

It's cute...

I personally think the joke is right funny, but my funny bone is huge. Janey my son has married a Chinese Lady. They live in Beijing. He teaches computers at a Western School. He almost talked Mom and me into joining them, but she's a dialysis patient and we can't get Medicare over there.

Mary Yellen your URl is short but interesting. I'll drop back later for a recipe. I do the cooking these days. My wife is ill. When I complain she tells me that she did it 44 years now it's your turn. I think God rescued me 1n 2003 so I could care for her. God bless.

That's cool. I've heard told that chinese ladies are the best...

My sense of hurmour is huge. I'm the one that usually 'gets' the Far Side comic jokes. I am the one that people rag on for telling corny jokes all the time too.

I don't know what it is like to live in China, i can imagine that things have changed quite a bit there in the past few years. Mind you we still are not happy with that country, since we (in toronto) lost out to Beijing for the Olympics....

I had to google for "shillelagh", and I'm Irish!

Looks like quite the weapon!

Now the joke was worth a chuckle, but that actually got me laughing.

Yes, I'm Irish too. My given name is mother's family name, Walker. My Great-great-great-- granddad came to America from Ireland in 1750.
