Infiltrating the Irish Republican Army
The CIA wished to infiltrate the Irish Republican Army, in order to keep tabs on its activities. To do so, they enlisted the help of one of their Irish members by the name of Murphy. To ensure he would not be discovered as a spy, there was to be no direct contact between them. When they needed information from Murphy, they would send another agent to his area. That agent would identify himself as a CIA member by uttering the words, "Tis fine weather we're having, but the weather will soon be even better."
A year passed, and the CIA sent one of theirs to retrieve information. He went into a local tavern and asked the bartender if he knew anyone named "Murphy". "Well," said the bartender, "there's a locksmith across the street, his name's Murphy. There's a Murphy down the street, he's the baker. And I'm a Murphy, myself." Deciding to start his search with the bartender, the agent said, "Tis fine weather we're having, but the weather will soon be even better." The Bartender's eyes lit up. "Oh! You want Murphy the spy! Hold on, I'll give you directions to his place."
