True NASA Story

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically designed to launch standard 4
pound dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the
space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate
the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the
strength of the windshields.

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the
windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a
gun was sent to the British engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers
stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the
shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control
console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two, and embedded itself in
the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow.

The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment,
along with the designs of the windshield and begged the US scientists for
suggestions.

You're going to love this... NASA responded with a one-line memo --
"Defrost the chicken."

Yes, very important. They should have mentioned this in the original procedure. It's a documentation failure. :)

Damn bastards...

Willravel 10-15-2004 09:43 AM

Good story, but it's a myth.

Noob 10-15-2004 09:44 AM

i dont know which one is worse that one or the one about the pen

CoachAlan 10-15-2004 11:59 AM

Before you go bandying about the word "true," have a looksee here. I once believed this story myself. Gotta love Snopes.

no wonder terrorists have no respect for the UN

Anyone who watches mythbusters on the Discovery channel would know that there's really no difference between frozen and thawed.

yep i agree, i watchd this episode a few times, no diffrence between thawed and not.... also correct me if i am wrong but isnt F=MA, and i dont belive the mass of the chicken would change if it was thawed or not.

correct, F=MA. Freezing increases density while decreasing volume which keeps mass constant.

The only difference would be in the plyability of the substance, which, at a lower velocity would have a LARGE effect. See: elastic and inelastic collisions for more info.

At the high velocity the "test" claims, however, it would make so little difference as to be negligible.

Guy I knew who worked at Grumman back in the day
told me that the people who ran this particular jet
engine test were called "chicken chuckers." FWIW.

Gortexfogg 10-18-2004 05:23 AM

Funny stuff, thanks.

WarriorBuddha 10-18-2004 06:18 AM

myth or not it's still funny. gotta watch out for those flying dead chickens...

Delvid 10-18-2004 08:21 AM

I have no idea if it is true or not but it is funny as hell.

Thanks, this is in tilted humor everyone...

spock 10-20-2004 12:39 AM

The point of humor is not to pick it apart!! If you dont get the joke, dont analyse it to death, you probably still wont get it.

I thought it was a great joke!!!

mirevolver 10-20-2004 01:12 PM

If it was posted as a regular joke people wouldn't have picked it apart. But it was posted as a "true" story.

actually when water freezes it expands INCREASING volume and decreasing the density stick a water bottle inside your freezer full of water overnight and watch it expand or add some ice cubes to a glass of water and watch them float

toverfie 10-22-2004 11:11 AM

Good myth....but it's a story.....yeah ok.....cant we just enjoy it?

anonymity_sucks 10-23-2004 09:31 PM
