Age Barometer

Total the number of these that you remember:

1. Blackjack chewing gum
2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water
3. Candy cigarettes
4. Soda pop machines that dispensed bottles
5. Coffee shops with tableside jukeboxes
6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers
7. Party lines
8. Newsreels before the movie
9. P.F. Flyers
10. Butch wax
11. Telephone numbers with a word prefix (Olive - 6933)
12. Peashooters
13. Howdy Doody
14. 45 RPM records
15. S&H Green Stamps
16. Hi-fi's
17. Metal ice trays with levers
18. Mimeograph paper
19. Blue flashbulbs
20. Beanie and Cecil
21. Roller skate keys
22. Cork popguns
23. Drive-ins
24. Studebakers
25. Wash tub wringers

If you remembered 0-5 You're still young.

If you remembered 6-10 You are getting older.

If you remembered 11-15 Don't tell your age.

If you remembered 16-25 You're older than dirt!.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sadly, I can easily remember at least 18 of these... Dirt huh... wow... that's old...
Gatorade Frost 05-06-2006 09:11 AM
I recognized 1 - Candy Cigarettes. 2 if you count that the barber shop here has an antique coke machine that uses bottles.
ubertuber 05-06-2006 09:25 AM
I guess that depends... Is it old dirt?
I personally remembered 6. I think there are about 5 more that I'd know on sight even though they weren't new during my childhood.
Elphaba 05-06-2006 10:00 AM
I remember all of them. ::sigh::
Brewmaniac 05-06-2006 10:21 AM
I remember all but 2, dirt=me! Want's to puke. Thanks mal...
17. Metal ice trays with levers
I remember how'd they stick to your hands if your hands were slightly damp when removing them from the freezer... and half the time the lever never quite worked... ICe cube makes are such awonderful invention
newtx 05-06-2006 05:20 PM
Remember 11 -................. Would tell my age but probably can't remember. Metal ice trays with levers didn't even work half the time for me. They stuck together and were a general pain in the butt. The newer plastic ones weren't much better. (unless they were filled with koolaid and you were about 6 years old) I think you are exactly on track. The older you are the more you appreciate making your own ice. At least I can never remember having ice delivered to me. We made our own in those crappy metal ice trays. :-)
la petite moi 05-06-2006 05:20 PM
I'm a youngin'...heehee.
cj2112 05-06-2006 06:33 PM
I remembered 15, I'm definitely realizing my age a lot more lately.
Bill O'Rights 05-06-2006 10:47 PM
2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water
3. Candy cigarettes
4. Soda pop machines that dispensed bottles
5. Coffee shops with tableside jukeboxes
6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers
7. Party lines
12. Peashooters
14. 45 RPM records
15. S&H Green Stamps
16. Hi-fi's
17. Metal ice trays with levers
18. Mimeograph paper
19. Blue flashbulbs
22. Cork popguns
23. Drive-ins
15. But then again...I was not trying very hard ;)
cyrnel 05-06-2006 11:02 PM
The only one I'm missing but it sounds familiar:
9. P.F. Flyers
Was that a bicycle or something?
-Dirt
Edit: Barnstormers maybe? Or acrobats?
maleficent 05-07-2006 04:41 AM
pf flyers
http://sneakers.pair.com/l/pf-tags.jpg
They were sneakers...
KungFuGuy 05-07-2006 02:40 PM
I remembered 6, and half of those are from my grandparent's basement, because they never throw stuff away. (like the metal ice cube tray that she still uses to this day.)
I also remember trying to eat one of those wax cola bottle candy things and how much it sucked and didn't taste like candy.
Ample 05-08-2006 09:53 AM
I remember 3, 14, and 23. I would think at 30 there would be more stuff I would remember on the list. Seem most of this stuff is for the people 50-35. I think it would have been better if they added more stuff from different generations.
ratbastard 05-08-2006 05:13 PM
remember all....
Zodijackyl 05-08-2006 06:11 PM
I remember 19 of them, althought I suspect that a number were just vintage keepsakes.
Jinn 05-08-2006 06:22 PM
1, Candy Cigarettes.. yay :-D
frogza 05-09-2006 06:53 AM
I remember 9.
Charlatan 05-09-2006 07:32 AM
I don't remember any of these...
What? Piss off!
Racer 05-09-2006 08:54 AM
Wow, I remember all but two! It seems that I'm older than dirt!!
rmarshall 05-09-2006 01:04 PM
All but #8,9,10. I suspect butch wax was hair wax, grease or something because of the expession "he looks really butch". Newsreels before movies were shown in old movies when people actually went to the movies in the movie. (if you know what I mean?)
I'm only 50.
balefire88 05-10-2006 12:52 AM
A grand total of .... one. Which reminds me, I got carded again tonight, and the bouncer started telling me me my license looked fake. Great, maybe the cops will think that too.
If memory serves, and that gets to be more of a stretch as the years slide by, "butch" was a particular brand of hair wax, the purpose of which was to keep the hair at the front in a fixed upright position, for those trendy souls who had "flat top" haircuts. The lid of the container was circular, and had little prongs sticking up, so that it could be used as a kind of comb.
Vitalis is another great dated hair product that needs to be on this list...I could take clean hair, after a shower, and make it look like I hadn't washed my hair in months.
healer 05-12-2006 12:39 AM
Let's see...
3. Candy cigarettes - They still sell these down at the local 7 Eleven
14. 45 RPM records - I still play these :p
16. Hi-fi's - There's an old Pioneer stack system still playing in my parent's house
19. Blue flashbulbs - very vaguely, but I remember what they smell like, so I guess they count.
So 4. Yay for youth. :D
WhiteKoopa 06-03-2006 06:42 PM
Candy cigarettes only, I think I still have some of those left in a bag of old halloween candies. I wouldn't dare to eat them though...
ryfo 06-13-2006 10:49 PM
Looks like I am an old fart who doesnt get out much..BTW the metal ice cube trays were the reason I gave up having ice in my drinks! I may remember 15 if mimeograph paper is the one that smelled like metho and was normallly produced purple writing..
MySexyAssJ 06-16-2006 09:54 AM
H. R. Puffinstuff was a Saturday morning show by Sid and Marty Kroft.
Deodorant marketed toward teenage girls, in the mid to late 70s. Could this be any more phallic? Even back then we boys knew what the girls were really doing with their deodorant.
James at 15 was a prime time television show about...James..at..15. It aired in 1977 when, coincidentaly, I was 15. It chronicled the trials and tribulations of being a teenager in the 70s.
