Good Games that are FREE!!!

I'm guessing that this is an already posted thread (what isn't) but I'm gonna ask it anyways

I want to know if any of you know any really good games online that are free
MMORPGs, RPG, Strategy, Card, Etc.

Right now I mostly play Gunbound, RO (Ragnarok Online if you didn't know) and Maple Story, all of these games are free (or at least beta Free)

RO is free because of free servers that host this game

I'm mainly looking for games that are capable for 56k Internet since that is what I have to work with.

Any information on this would be great.

FailedEagle 01-22-2005 02:34 AM

Have you checked out Kings of Chaos? I used to really like playing it!

www.kingsofchaos.com

It's text based, but pretty fun!

Hardknock 01-22-2005 05:51 AM

I know where to get lots of games, but I'll keep it to myself since it's not very PC around here.

Moskie 01-22-2005 07:50 AM

I'm having a total brain fart, but not too long ago, I came across a site that had listings for old games that have been released to the public and are now free. This site had games like Dune 2, Relentless, some of the King's Quest series, as well as other classic Sierra games.

They used a term for these games, and I can't remember it for the life of me. Something like "openware"... it was "<something>ware", I know that much. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

edit:
Abandonware!! that's what it is

First hit on google for "abandonware": http://www.abandonwarering.com/

Look for more on google.

Zant 01-22-2005 11:28 AM

Great, thanks for all the information

I tried KoC for a while and didn't like it much

www.darkwars.org is a text based game I play that I like due to the simplicity of it.

not to mention all my friends play it :p

Hanabal 01-22-2005 12:07 PM

Anarchy Online. Its worth a look. Its well worth its price.

NoSoup 01-22-2005 12:09 PM

I am a fan of Dominion....

www.kamikazegames.com

It's a strategy game that updates every hour, on the hour...

Welcome to addiction

There's a great list over at <a href="http://www.liberatedgames.com/gamelisting.php">Liberated Games</a> :)

Furthermore, some of my favorite free (as in speech) games are <a href="http://www.bzflag.org/">bzflag</a> (Irix, Linux, *BSD, Windows, Mac OS X, and more), <a href="http://www.reptilelabour.com/software/chromium/">Chromium B.S.U.</a> (Windows version available but "unsupported"), <a href="http://trackballs.sourceforge.net/">Trackballs</a> (haven't tried the Windows version, but it's there), <a href="http://www.nongnu.org/crack-attack/">Crack Attack!</a> (It's under developmental transition right now, so I can't find the Windows version on the site...I have it sitting around though, so if you're interested then PM me with your e-mail address), and, lastly, <a href="http://www.frozen-bubble.org/">Frozen Bubble</a>

FngKestrel 01-22-2005 01:32 PM

Home of the Underdogs is a pretty good site for abandonware.

Zant 01-22-2005 05:54 PM

I found http://www.abandonwarering.com/ to be very interesting

Abandonware is completely new to me, and I found a ton of fun games to waste time with.

Thanks for the link

Lak 01-22-2005 05:57 PM

The Ur-Quan Masters is a totally free port of the 3DO version of Star Control II - and its really good. Toys For Bob, the original creators of SC2 just up and gave them the source code and artwork. Although, it's not particularly 56k friendly. It can range from about 12mb to 160mb depending on what components you want to add in. If you wanna leave your net on for a while, check it out at http://sc2.scourceforge.net/.
Also for abandonware, Abandonia is good (not as good as the underdogs though...) www.abandonia.com.

Scorpion23 01-22-2005 06:44 PM

The Ur-Quan Masters is a great game. I was so happy when I found out that I could play SC2 in windows.

Fallen 01-23-2005 08:55 AM

check out www.worldconquests.com

Zant 01-23-2005 12:01 PM

Checked out both Ur-Quan and World Conquest and found them both to be interesting, Ur-Quans quite a bit of fun, and world conquest seems to be a well made game.

FngKestrel 01-23-2005 12:26 PM

Ur-Quan Masters single player is fun, but if you find someone to play super-melee with, that's ridiculously fun. :D My roommates and I spent many hours playing each other. Like Space War on steroids.

RogueHunter65 01-23-2005 01:32 PM

Counter Strike, Starcraft, Diablo II, and Halo (PC) are all free to play online. When you purchase the counter strike/ halflife collection it comes with other free games that you can play online.

As far as MMORPG games, it is very difficult to find any like Everquest that are free to play because of the cost the companies have to pay to maintain the servers and such. Diablo II is not a true MMORPG but it is close enough when there is no fee to play online.

Kadath 01-23-2005 02:32 PM

I love that other people appreciate The Ur-Quan Masters.

Zant 01-23-2005 02:34 PM

I'm not talking about those games dude, I'm talking about Free all around games, no buy cost at all

Such as RO on Private Servers for some MMORPG play

or other games such as Gunbound and Maple Story

www.globalmaple.com (Maple Story)
www.gunbound.net (Gunbound)

tecoyah 01-23-2005 03:15 PM

You gather more flys..........

Hanabal 01-23-2005 04:15 PM

if you want a free MMORPG just go for anarchy online.

bbbbbb555 01-23-2005 04:40 PM

i play tibia (www.tibia.com) which is a free mmorpg, and although the graphics are not very good, it is really addicting. i have been playing off and on for about 3 years now.

lukethebandgeek 01-23-2005 04:49 PM

I am now interested in this ur-quan game. I'm downloading it now. You know, http://www.newgrounds.com has tons of free flash games. Most of them suck, but some are really fun.

El Kaz 01-23-2005 05:29 PM

www.addictinggames.com has a growing list of mostly fun games. They're pretty much all short-lasted, but it's quite the time killer.

Zant 01-24-2005 01:15 PM

I though Anarchy Online was p2p?

Or is it like what Guild Wars is (supposedly) going to be?
buy game and no monthly fee?

thanks for the Addictive Games link, lots of fun!

Coppertop 01-24-2005 01:17 PM

Last I checked MUDs are free. And fun.

Didn't know Anarchy Online was a MUD

Hanabal 01-24-2005 03:57 PM

anarvhy online recently allowed people to download the original version for free 900megs tho, and play for a year with no fees

As far as I know it is not. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a similarly named MUD out there, however.

thriolith 01-24-2005 08:54 PM

Knight Online is a free MMORPG. Check it out at http://www.knightonlineworld.com/.
The site is currently down though. You can also find out more about it here. Don't download the client off the second link however, it's the Malaysian version. Plus, you'll have to reigster off of the first site anyways.

Zant 01-24-2005 11:03 PM

Wow! Anarchy Online for Free for a year
thats amazing, now I definitely have to check this out
is it a free year from the date u register?
if not, when does it end?

Now these are the kinda games I'm looking for!

definitely gonna try the Knights Online game
that games looks great!

And "no" again. Bloody spam games...

I believe Tribes 2 was released not too long ago.
MUDs are almost always free, and I've found plenty of good games at Home of the Underdogs.

Zant 01-26-2005 04:43 PM

I don't like MUDs for the reason that there are no pictures or graphics, and then it just gets boring for me, I heard Tribes 2 was a great game, maybe I'll try and get a demo or something, its not very 56k friendly though, not many fps multiplayer games are.

Blaspheme 01-26-2005 05:16 PM

Tribes 1 and Tribes 2 were both released as freeware as part of the hype leading up to the release of Tribes Vengeance. You can grab either or both at FilePlanet.

I really don't know how many public servers still exist for the two games, but Tribes 1 was extremely 56K friendly (I was playing on a 24.4K connect back in the day and did quite well.)

In the field of web based MUD-style games, Kingdom of Loathing kept me entertained for a few weeks. www.kingdomofloathing.com

January 2006 I believe. The expansions aren't free to d/l or play, but the original AO is.

Zant 01-26-2005 10:37 PM

yea, I went to the site and found that out, still good though
although 900mb is a fairly big DL for me since I only have 56k
anyone know if AO is 56k friendly?

Edit:
Found Tribes on Fileplanet and started to DL them and found them to actually be 56k friendly, very friendly in fact, I had to use GameSpy to find servers though, only found a few that were online at a time.

Zant 01-28-2005 07:52 AM

(Sorry for Double Post)

Has anyone found any more new games?

I found this one game that right now is in beta phase where your on a hoverboard doing tricks and stuff.

I DLed it and it was pretty fun
the link: http://global.asdfgame.com/

Hope you all keep posting, found a lot of games that were a lotta fun because of this thread.

01-28-2005 09:03 AM

Warpath 97
http://www.synthetic-reality.com/warpath32.htm

Coppertop 01-28-2005 10:39 AM

http://www.steelpanthersonline.com/

Check this game out for sure. It's a turn based World War 2 strategy game. Free and extremely fun.

Zant 01-28-2005 08:49 PM

Just wondering, has anyone ever tried the WWII MMORPG?
I heard it needs work but if it got that work that it would turn out to be a good game
also heard that its still in a Beta Phase

(this game has been out for a while)
