Good Games that are FREE!!!
I'm guessing that this is an already posted thread (what isn't) but I'm gonna ask it anyways
I want to know if any of you know any really good games online that are free MMORPGs, RPG, Strategy, Card, Etc. Right now I mostly play Gunbound, RO (Ragnarok Online if you didn't know) and Maple Story, all of these games are free (or at least beta Free) RO is free because of free servers that host this game I'm mainly looking for games that are capable for 56k Internet since that is what I have to work with. Any information on this would be great. |

I'm having a total brain fart, but not too long ago, I came across a site that had listings for old games that have been released to the public and are now free. This site had games like Dune 2, Relentless, some of the King's Quest series, as well as other classic Sierra games.
They used a term for these games, and I can't remember it for the life of me. Something like "openware"... it was "<something>ware", I know that much. Anyone know what I'm talking about? edit: Abandonware!! that's what it is First hit on google for "abandonware": http://www.abandonwarering.com/ Look for more on google.

There's a great list over at Liberated Games
Furthermore, some of my favorite free (as in speech) games are bzflag (Irix, Linux, *BSD, Windows, Mac OS X, and more), Chromium B.S.U. (Windows version available but "unsupported"), Trackballs (haven't tried the Windows version, but it's there), Crack Attack! (It's under developmental transition right now, so I can't find the Windows version on the site...I have it sitting around though, so if you're interested then PM me with your e-mail address), and, lastly, Frozen Bubble

The Ur-Quan Masters is a totally free port of the 3DO version of Star Control II - and its really good. Toys For Bob, the original creators of SC2 just up and gave them the source code and artwork. Although, it's not particularly 56k friendly. It can range from about 12mb to 160mb depending on what components you want to add in. If you wanna leave your net on for a while, check it out at http://sc2.scourceforge.net/.
Also for abandonware, Abandonia is good (not as good as the underdogs though...) www.abandonia.com.

Counter Strike, Starcraft, Diablo II, and Halo (PC) are all free to play online. When you purchase the counter strike/ halflife collection it comes with other free games that you can play online.
As far as MMORPG games, it is very difficult to find any like Everquest that are free to play because of the cost the companies have to pay to maintain the servers and such. Diablo II is not a true MMORPG but it is close enough when there is no fee to play online.

www.addictinggames.com has a growing list of mostly fun games. They're pretty much all short-lasted, but it's quite the time killer.

Knight Online is a free MMORPG. Check it out at http://www.knightonlineworld.com/.
The site is currently down though. You can also find out more about it here. Don't download the client off the second link however, it's the Malaysian version. Plus, you'll have to reigster off of the first site anyways.

I believe Tribes 2 was released not too long ago. MUDs are almost always free, and I've found plenty of good games at Home of the Underdogs. |

I don't like MUDs for the reason that there are no pictures or graphics, and then it just gets boring for me, I heard Tribes 2 was a great game, maybe I'll try and get a demo or something, its not very 56k friendly though, not many fps multiplayer games are.

Tribes 1 and Tribes 2 were both released as freeware as part of the hype leading up to the release of Tribes Vengeance. You can grab either or both at FilePlanet.
I really don't know how many public servers still exist for the two games, but Tribes 1 was extremely 56K friendly (I was playing on a 24.4K connect back in the day and did quite well.) In the field of web based MUD-style games, Kingdom of Loathing kept me entertained for a few weeks. www.kingdomofloathing.com |

yea, I went to the site and found that out, still good though
although 900mb is a fairly big DL for me since I only have 56k anyone know if AO is 56k friendly? Edit: Found Tribes on Fileplanet and started to DL them and found them to actually be 56k friendly, very friendly in fact, I had to use GameSpy to find servers though, only found a few that were online at a time.
