Totally agree with Halo being overrated. FPS just don't really impress me all that much anymore. The last FPS that I played that really seemed like it was a big difference from previous games of the genre was GoldenEye for N64, and that's only because that was the first time I was exposed to 4 player multiplayer with all the different modes.
I'd also have to say that GTA:Vice City was pretty overrated. Well, maybe not so much overrated as definitely did not live up to the hype for me. It did make some nice improvements, but it really just felt like a barely past half-assed rehash of GTA3. It might have just been over the extreme excitement over the game and the belief that it may just be the greatest game of all time.

Halo 1/2.
FPS's for people with crappy computers or no computer at all. Don't get me started on how little skill the game takes to make par- it has a very low plateu in the professional gaming scene. Pros play Halo to make money (microsoft sponsored 50grand tournies...), and they play other FPS games to regain their sanity/skill. On the plus side, the game is extremely well polished. It IS a fun game to play, however, if you're at the any least bit competative, its low celing is too hard to live with. Zelda: Windwaker The atmosphere was great. The game was very well done- very well polished just like Halo. The game's challenge was rediculously easy. Exploration was stupid- sail an extra 10 minutes to another island with a stupid obvious puzzle. "Oh, there's a rock with a crack on it. Maybe I should bomb it?" Really, the puzzles were insulting- but then again, the game's probably geared towards people younger than me. (but that doesn't explain why people my age worship it) |

With Zelda:TWW, it wasn't really Nintendo that spread the hype, but crazed game reviewers and industry 'experts' that didn't want to point out the fact that it really is aimed at young'uns. I played through the entire game without dying once, in fact, the only thing I've died to in the game is a pig that I turned hostile.
That said, it does play really, really well, and I'm looking forward to the engine in the next one, which won't be so easy

i think the halo series at all is overrated. but i think a lot of games are really overrated. videogames have potential to be really fucking good, but noone ever tries to make them that new or exciting, or they do try but they just fail. devil may cry was fucking amazing, but they really messed it up when they tried to do it again. and then choas leigion, which i'd like to be able to say i like, but i really don't. one good game makes a new impact on the world of gaming, then a bunch of other people try and copy it until it gets old... and sometimes something good comes out of it. but it's always the new, fresh ideas that are worth playing. and halo was just... the same first person shooter i've ever played. there was nothing new or interesting about it, GOD you cant even RUN. i hate halo.

I can't really think of any truely over-hyped game, why, because all of the ones people
have seem to have listed so far sold TREMENDOUSLY. Whether or not you think its over- hyped is moot, because the fact is 9/10 people still play those games like mad. If a game sold badly, and only 5% of the owners of the game actually did like it, then we could qualify it as over-hyped, but from my general knowledge, this really doesn't happen. Although, if anything, I might... MIGHT say Doom 3. Because even though most people think its awesome from purely a graphics stand-point, the replay value is almost zero and it considered to be a generally bad game, gameplay wise. Also, for people who yell at the Final Fantasy series, you have to understand that the people who play/hype them are nerds. You have to be to like Role Playing games. It's all extremely repetitive from a rules standpoint. Where it gets fun is story-line, tactics, gameplay, etc. So while the fact that you have to fight, cast spells, and fight enemies never changes, the way you fight, cast spells, and attack enemies and how you interact with your environment changes from game to game. The people who play Dungeons and Dragons do the same thing over and over again, but its the storyline and adventure that makes it exciting for them and keeps them coming back time after time, something that the people who don't play can't seem to understand (in general.)

ive gotta say cs is the most over rated game of all time because i think its the most popular fps game of all time yet the physics behind the game are pure shit. in fact when viewed in slow-mo the guns shoot bullets in patterns that are physicaly impossible. Nothing like basing a realism game on impossible physics.

Well, a lot of games are seen as over-rated because people expected too much from them. Personally, I'd put Deus Ex 2 on the list (not top of the list, though) for that exact reason.
The original was brilliant (if sluggish), the new version could never be as good as I wanted it, but they could at least have *tried*... The game is slow as hell (even when compared to the original), has very small levels, and really doesn't allow you a lot of choices of where to go or what to do. On the other hand, if only the graphics engine was faster, the levels larger, the game longer, the replay value greater... it could have been perfect. Kinda like Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines; it's a great game, but it's too short, too small, too buggy at times. I can't wait for a sequel or expansion pack, but I'm afraid that new version will be worse, and it'll become the new "most overrated game of all time"... |

Most overrated Game of this year was Doom 3 by FAR. Totally overhyped, made your hardware buckle, that was about it. Eye candy to the extreme.
That being said, FPS games are now about online competition. Playing over broadband ala xboxe live with halo 2 has already been very popular for games like Quake 3, counter-strike, unreal tournament, etc. "E-Sports" is a rapidly growing area of gaming. Don't believe me? www.gotfrag.com www.thecpl.com That's where FPS games are headed. |

Umm...CPL and gotfrag.com have been around for a LOOOONG time.
FPS aren't "now" about competition, they've been about competition for like, the past 5 years. As for the most over-rated game of all time? World of Warcraft. Oh yes, I went there. |
