"Inverted" or "normal" mouse in a FPS

There is a thread on this right now, but a coworker and I are having an argument on which is better, an “inverted mouse” or the default setting. Now, I think that what the game manufactures call “inverted” is actually more normal.

Think about it, you look up, you pull your head back; down – forward. Make a whole lot of sense to me.

Let me know which if us is crazy.

kreskin 09-13-2004 11:12 PM

Well I treid to add a poll so we could vote on this, but for some reson, it didn't let me. Oh well, I tried.

MrFlux 09-13-2004 11:20 PM

INVERTED!

Much more realistic.

Bim 09-14-2004 12:05 AM

Always Inverted

Feels much more natural to me. I have no real reason why. Just always has.

adysav 09-14-2004 02:08 AM

You lot are freaky :P
I've always used the normal settings because that's just the way the cursor works on the desktop. I can't understand how pushing your hand forward can be associated with looking down.
Perhaps for flight games where the actual physical action would be to push forward with you hand, but not fps :/

Mr.Deflok 09-14-2004 02:19 AM

Default... whatever that is. However on Third Person game I always invert, up is down and down is up, just like a throttle...

Destrox 09-14-2004 03:50 AM

Unless its a flight sim, I dont see how you could possibly call Inverted normal. You push the mouse up, you expect your cursor to go up. I dont see much more to it then that, which is why I use normal.

Same goes for the WASD and arrow key things.. long as you have flexible fingers arrow keys provide you with a much greater defined grouping of keys.

MrFlux 09-14-2004 04:03 AM

Destrox: That was it seems you when you move the mouse "up" (read, away from you) you're pushing the back of the persons head forward so they look down. Makes a lot of sense especially if you're using a joystick.

Lasereth 09-14-2004 05:17 AM

I didn't know anyone actually inverted the mouse for FPS. :) Flight controls, etc. I can understand, but not the actual FPS! When I push the mouse forward I want the damn crosshairs to go UP. I can't imagine doing it the other way. I guess if ya play a lot of console FPS games that use inverted controls (most) then you could get used to playing PC FPS games like that, but using joysticks is way different from using a mouse.

-Lasereth

Carno 09-14-2004 05:47 AM

For any console games, I always use inverted.

For computer games though, I do not like inverted. It's much more accurate to have normal style than inverted. Flight sims are the exception though.

MPower 09-14-2004 06:44 AM

Always inverted. Old holdover from flight sims I guess. And most console games dont let you invert the controls so Im screwed there.

bltzkriegmcanon 09-14-2004 06:48 AM

I gotta use normal. Like Lasereth said, I expect my view to go up when I move my mouse forward.

BuddyHawks 09-14-2004 07:30 AM

NORMAL is most natural to me.

bookerV 09-14-2004 07:33 AM

I'm all about using the normal. I'm not a fan of the inverted movements...

SiNai 09-14-2004 08:06 AM

Normal when it comes to FPS with a mouse, Invert when it comes to Joysticks, Xboxes, etc. Those are just the ways that come natural.

Usually it's only the Y axis that's inverted... do you invert the X axis (left and right) using the same logic?

MageB420666 09-14-2004 09:23 AM

I can't stand inverted controls, they throw me off. It doesn't matter if I'm on a PC with a mouse or on a console with a controller. The only games I can play with inverted controls are flight sims because that is how the controls actually work.

dauvin 09-14-2004 09:33 AM

Inveted all the way! (AND max mouse sensitivity)

ratbastid 09-14-2004 10:26 AM

I don't know why there's an argument about it... It's an option in game preferences because it IS a matter of preference. There's no absolute "better" about it.

Me, I prefer inverted. Don't really know why--I agree, it doesn't make much sense. It's just what feels best.

Halx 09-14-2004 10:54 AM

I always use normal, but I did know a guy who used inverted, and he was one of the very best in the game that we both played... along with me.

powerclown 09-14-2004 11:43 AM

Inverted, circa 1995.

Um no because that doesn't fit the logic :p Push a side of their head to the left (move mouse to the left) makes head turn left.... push it right it turns right. Comprenez? :D

hiredgun 09-14-2004 07:15 PM

I whole-heartedly prefer normal (with the exception of flight sims). I don't think there's anything wrong with inverted, but I honestly had no idea that this many people used that option.

Bim 09-14-2004 07:41 PM

Ohh, wait. . . hold on. . . i was confused! I play with normal controls.

No no no, i mean such as when you are in windows and you push your mouse up. The cursor moves up, so unless you also have windows inverted, that just didnt make any sense to me at all.

And yeah it makes sense for joysticks, but you dont use joysticks if you want some form of accuracy in a FPS.

Sure it does if you are talking about pushing the back of someone's head.... like a telescope on a pivot. If you want the front to move left, you push the back to the right....

I'm putting WAY too much thought into this.

ninety09 09-14-2004 08:24 PM

I've always used inverted. I tried using normal, but I just can't get used to it.

Howdee 09-14-2004 08:45 PM

I vote Inverted. To me this is "Normal", the default settings are bass-ackwards to me.

Peace

Howdee

Shizukana 09-14-2004 10:19 PM

Normal settings on FPS. Then again, I used mice to control cursors long before I ever played an FPS... It just feels more natural.

TheShadow 09-15-2004 12:03 AM

Normal. Even having the inverted possible causes no end of problems. If you have two people playing a FPS in turns (One person playing inverted, and the other normal in this case), a power struggle ensues over the options menu, wasting a ton of time.

Wulf_Hunter 09-15-2004 07:43 AM

Well, before I got back into flight sims I used, inverted. But after I sims, inverted seemed weird, so now I use normal.

Wulf_Hunter 09-15-2004 07:44 AM

Well, before I got back into flight sims I used, inverted. But now inverted felt weird, so now I use normal.

Mantus 09-15-2004 09:09 AM

I can use both. Takes me about 2 hours to get used to inverted.

Problem is that once I get used to inverted, standard feels totaly alien to me. And because I play lots of other games, I end up using standard otherwise my brain gets confused.

NeverBorn 09-15-2004 11:03 AM

default, inverteds only for flight sims

Scipio 09-15-2004 03:40 PM

normal; I used inverted back in the original UT days, but I found a game that had normal only, so I elected to use normal for everything, and I have every since.

portwineboy 09-15-2004 03:59 PM

Normal. I had 3 coworkers in my last job and 2 of them used inverted though. One was a flight sim addict and the other just odd. :)

Horrendous 09-15-2004 04:27 PM

go normal!! i don't think i've even really understood what inverted meant on the options =P (i guess i don't really play a lot) i've always just used the default, but this inverted sounds interesting... i can see the logic behind it. might try it one day

CityOfAngels 09-16-2004 12:59 AM

If I use a mouse, like for Counter-Strike, I prefer normal. The mouse gives full visibility control, so I see no reason for inverted.

If I use a controller, like for SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals, I prefer inverted. It's sooo hard to aim with a controller, and having it inverted just makes it easier.

whocarz 09-16-2004 02:55 AM

One of the first PC games I played was Aces Over Europe. A beautiful flight sim that started a love affair for PC games and WW2 when I was a wee boy. When Quake first came out, I had to play inverted because I was so use to flight sim controls. Now, however, I play with the normal setting. I tried inverted recently and it was a disaster.

I'm putting WAY too much thought into this.

Exactly. If I get into this mentality, then I can play an FPS just fine with inverted controls. My normal mentality, however, makes me feel like there is some kinda invisible pole that extends directly to my target. I dunno... when I use inverted I feel like if my whole body (well the character's body) is moving just to point the gun, and the arms are stiff. When I use normal, I feel like the character only moves his arms and shoulders to move the gun. I guess you get more accuracy in real life if both your body and arms move to help you aim. Ha! Each to their own ^^

The Phenomenon 09-17-2004 04:14 AM

I play with normal.

I hate inverted.

It's gotta be normal. Now, if it were a sim I'd use inverted. I move my head up to look up, so I'll move my mouse up as well to look up.

stonegrody 09-17-2004 12:06 PM

Normal. Although I do use inverted when using a game controller for consoles.

crony 09-18-2004 05:31 AM

Inverted. It just feels right for some reason.

My vote:

NORMAL MOUSE

Inverted is for crazy people!

clutch 09-24-2004 11:20 PM

always normal, and MAX mouse sensitivity?!?!?!? to me, that just soudns stupid. as a counterstrike palyer, I'm looking for the most precise aim I can get, and that has to be done with lower sentivity. although high senitivity gives you the advantage of turning faster if you get shot at from behind, I'm willing to take the extra split second if I can ddo that with control. Its near;y impossible to aim from a logn distance with high sensitivity.

(that and, counterstrike sensitivity goes up so high that the smalleset mouse movemnt makes you turn 180 degrees. hahaha)

Same here. I've played both ways though and I don't have a strong preference.

roadkill 09-25-2004 06:43 PM

normal for me

livewirerc 09-26-2004 05:57 AM

I always use inverted, but that may be because when I first started playing mouse-controlled games it was mainly flight and mech sim games, and they're set up for inverted by default. Now it just feels more natural.

Redjake 09-26-2004 11:29 AM

For flying airplanes and helicopters and stuff like that, I need it inverted. But for normal, walking-through-the-level FPS, I don't see how anyone could invert it. I mean, you are moving the cross-hair to shoot the enemy....up is up, down is down :) I don't think of myself as moving my head in FPS games.....I think of it as moving the gun, and my gun goes up when I push my mouse forward, and my gun goes down my I pull my mouse back :)

Paradise Lost 09-26-2004 11:50 AM

I used to play inverted back in the day when DOS games only had Joystick support, and
because of Flight Sims and stuff inverted was much easier to control. But now with mouse,
normal has been MUCH easier to use than inverted.

2sheds 09-26-2004 07:25 PM

inverted for me. i think it's because of all the flight sim-type games i played before fps games became available.

Madd 09-28-2004 04:26 AM

An ex-inverter, used to play inverted back in Quake 1, back then i used to love my flight sims, after i stoped playing flight sims thoe normal is the way i play.

Slayer 09-28-2004 09:02 AM

Normal for FPS game. Inverted for Flight sims.

Coppertop 04-29-2005 02:40 PM

Inverted is for weirdos. Up is up!

This definitely needs to be a poll.

FngKestrel 04-29-2005 04:53 PM

alpha 04-30-2005 07:44 AM

Normal for me too. I tried learning to play inverted just out of interest, but I just couldn't get used to it.

jujueye 04-30-2005 01:12 PM

There's a reason why normal is called normal.

I'm with adysav: that's just the way the cursor works on the desktop. Why fark with it?

Jakes 04-30-2005 10:04 PM

it doesnt matter which you use cause while you were arguing i fragged you, i use normal by the way

the real question is do you use a normal mouse or one with a ball that you move with your fingers

alansmithee 05-02-2005 01:49 AM

It depends on the game for me. Generally on consoles I prefer inverted, but on comp I often use normal.

ChickenNinja 05-02-2005 02:28 PM

Argumentum ad populum!

With mice, it's normal for first person, inverted for third person. With sticks, it's inverted for everything.

RogueHunter65 05-02-2005 03:43 PM

Depends on the game. I usually play the way the games comes. For instance, when I started to play halo on the comp, it was inverted. So I play halo inverted. When I started Unreal Tournament it was Normal so I play normal. It doesnt really matter to me. But If I had to choose before starting a game....I would use inverted. But once I start a game in one control I can't switch.

asiansrock 05-02-2005 04:10 PM

For FPS on the computer at least, up should be up and down should be down. That's the only way it should be done! I've tried inverted before and I feel like it totally kills my reflexes because it is counter-intuitive to pull down instead of up to shoot something above you. Besides you're not viewing from behidn yoru head but in your eyes, and if yo uwant to look up, what do you do? You look UP. That's just my take on it at least.

How about another question though? In games that have a choice, do you prefer right or left handed models? Do you prefer center or no models? If center and and no models are not a choice, which do you prefer, right or left?

I personally prefer Center models (Such as in UT2k3/4) and then Left (go go counter-strike).

Confederate 05-02-2005 07:35 PM

It's always where foward means up, and backwards means down, i think that's the normal way.

Wingless 05-02-2005 08:10 PM

Last time I checked, up = up, down = down.

Except for flight sims. Pilots are weird.

Eight 05-03-2005 02:30 AM

Normal. Been like that since quake 2.

Have tried inverted but it freaks me out :) lol

MiSo 05-03-2005 02:34 AM

for computer games:
normal (up = up) is alot more natural for me with a mouse. i tried to play inverted but it just didnt stick... although, if i had a controller i would play inverted.

for console gaming:
always inverted.... ALWAYS

asiansrock 05-03-2005 05:17 AM

First Person Shooters on the console aren't worth the time it takes to throw the game disc/cartridge out of the window :-P

akito 05-03-2005 11:01 AM

Wow... inverted is actually a lot more popular than I figured it would be.

I, for one, cannot use inverted, it just doesn't make sense to me. I tried it way back in the day of Unreal Tournament, but hated it and never tried it again.

cyrnel 05-03-2005 11:39 AM

To me normal is console-ish and 2-dimensional. Inverted is immersive.

We (GUI developer) did 3d control testing late 80's and early 90's. (Back then normal was usually called inverted) Y-axis inversion preference was split. When compared to each user's computer experience, it was almost always the newer users who preferred what we now call normal. They often complained about switching between one direction for moving the desktop pointer and another for "moving their head". More seasoned users had less of this problem and were in a kind of suspension of disbelief, moving their 3d point of view without any thought of the cursor. Opinions varied depending on 3d task & world, user time with arcade games, and experience with flight (real or not). Later, console defaults seemed to influence people toward today's "normal".

Whatever. If we learned anything, it's that some people are world-centric, others are cursor-centric. Give them the choice.

Just wait until drive-by-wire takes over you try to take your SO's toyota to the store with her cusomized X-Box3 controls.

Scipio 05-03-2005 08:40 PM

I used inverted for a time, but switched to normal (like 4-5 years ago) cause I played a game that didn't have inverted. They both work the same; it's just what you're used to.

bbbbbb555 05-03-2005 09:22 PM

normal feels right for me, i always have problems when i try to use my roomates computer for a FPS. it seems like it should not be that different, but it makes me feel real stupid when i cant do it.

itch vaccine 05-03-2005 10:15 PM

This of CS .. you want to aim his head when he is up there..

my first impulse is to move my mouse upwards.

Inverted would be weird.

Normal of course =)

Lasereth 05-05-2005 10:35 AM

I think some people in this thread are saying inverted while thinking about console games and joysticks. A large majority of players that use inverted console joystick controls use "up is up, down is down" in FPS (sans flight games). There really should be some clarification and a poll on this thread!

-Lasereth

Raptor20561 05-05-2005 03:30 PM

I'm weird like this, inverted on FPS console games with controllers, but i'll shoot myself before i play an inverted FPS with a mouse on the PC

hrandani 05-05-2005 07:22 PM

I read that if you switch things up like this you'll grow more neurons in that part of your brain which in this case will help if you're ever in a car wreck or something like that, and may lead to more 'durability' in the case of alzheimers or a stroke. I'm a neurobiologist, btw ; D

So I will play games with inverted mouse one week, then the next I'll switch it to normal. Fucks with my head though. I like it.

Raptor20561 05-05-2005 08:33 PM

YES MORE NEURONS! haha thanks for the advice.

wait a second... so if i switch up inverted and normal every week, will that even out with the brain cells i loose from drinking?

Coppertop 05-06-2005 12:26 PM

biznatch 05-08-2005 02:47 PM

to me, normal is inverted. so yeah, inverted :)

Stompy 05-09-2005 08:24 AM

I don't get how people can use inverted.

I mean, think about it... up = down and down = up? Mmmkay.

Sure, anyone can get used to any method, but WHY? That would be like making left go up, right go left, up go right, and down go ... down. Maybe I'm crazy but... if I move the mouse up, it should go up, not down. :hmm:

biznatch 05-09-2005 02:32 PM

As people already explained..inverted is normal ..because looking down with your head would be more of a pushing down motion, and looking up is like having your head pulled back...
Anyway, it doesn't really matter I guess.
Just we'll see whos a plane pilot later and who isnt. :D
