Playing Final Fantasy 6

I decided to finally try and beat the FFA version of Final Fantasy 6. I remember playing this game as Final Fantasy 3 way back in 5th grade. My bro and i never got to finish it 'cause we hadn't returned it to Wherehouse in over a month, so our dad came in while we were playing, pulled the cartridge out of the SNES, and took it to Wherehouse.

So, here I am, 2.5 hours into the game and I'm lovin' it. I'm up to the part where you choose between three scenarios (Locke, Sabin, or Terra/Edgar/Banon), and I've beaten the Locke scenario. Right now I'm on my way to the forest in the Sabin scenario.

Anyone else ever play this game? Personally, it is one of my all-time favorites. Looking past the outdated graphics, it has the best storyline among all other Final Fantasies.

Shit, I been runnin' the ROM of the SNES version, and the story isn't half bad. Graphics make me chuckle, though.

So which came first, FF fans - cuccos or chocobos? I've only played FFX through, and as far as I remember, the cuccos first really showed up in LOZ:LTTP.

cucos are the chickens in Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past. And Chocobos came out first, making their first appearance(in america, not sure about japan) in Final Fantasy 2. I love FF6, but I dont know, FF IV(our 2) was awesome as all hell.

My favorite SNES game these days. Perfect for those long trips when all you've got is your low-powered laptop.

I've gotten pretty far into the game at one point, but then stopped for some reason. Now I feel like starting up again, from scratch...

Ah, yes, then I'd have to say Chocobos came first.
FF 4 Released November of 1991
Link to the Past Released April of 1992

Nefir, glad this thread inspired you to play again. I'm now at the battle of Narshe and it's still as fun as the first time I played it.

This happens to be my favourite game of all time. From the great story to the unforgettable characters, I'll never stop replaying this classic. I've recommended it to maybe 20 people, and they've all loved it. It deserves that and more, to say the least.

On a sidenote, I still regret the day I sold my FF3 cartridge. They're so expensive to get a hold of now!

Yeah, well, the FFA version has all the extras! Also, no need to worry about an expiring cartridge battery for your saves, as it's all saved on a nifty PS1 memory card.

I've heard that the Anthology version has some terrible loading times. Is this true I'd love to get it, but if it's more fun on an emulator I don't want to waste my money.

Loading times are far from terrible, but as with any PS game, there are loading times. What you probably heard about is the slight change in each battle, where at the end, the battle fades away, while in the SNES version it immediately cuts to the world map or the storyline.

Actually on the regular Playstation the load times were horrendous, but on the PS2 they are fine.

Yeah, I have all of those FF collections games, and load times aren't 'terrible.' (I have a PS2)

I just played through FF1, and maaaaaaaaaaan. That was literally the hardest RPG I've ever played, and I even had a friend who had played through it already help me here and there. (I played it how it was, not on easy mode or whatever it is called).

I think I'll play 6 next since people seem to love it so much (For me so far, 7 is my fav)

lol if it were any other game I'd say that's pretty sad, but since it's FF6 I must not only forgive you, but also give you props.

Long Version: FF1's difficulty is entirely dependent on the composition of your party. The "traditional" party of fighter, black belt, white mage and black mage is actually a pretty difficult party to finish the game with. Because the game severely rations magic, both of the mages are basically useless during the game's many random encounters and only marginally useful during boss battles The rationing of magic causes the game to greatly favor physical attacks over magic. This rationing causes a fighter/fighter/fighter/red mage or a four fighter party to be the two most powerful parties. The red mage has a few spells (Fast comes to mind) which assist the fighters during difficult boss battles, the red mage has a reasonably high physical attack level for random encounters and the red mage can use the spell "exit" which allows the party to leave the final dungeon. The only cons to a four fighter party are the cost of weapons/armors in the game and a small amount of difficulty in early dungeons (marsh cave) if you try a low-level game. The money con is greatly offset by the LARGE numbers of magic swords (were, bane, giant, ect) you receive from chests. The game throws a huge number of powerful swords at the party after the battle with Astros. This allows the four fighter party to avoid paying for weapons and focus on upgrading armor every few towns. The free swords, coupled with the ability to avoid buying very expensive spells, allows the four fighter party to always carry 99 potions and still have tons of money left over for when Pro Rings appear in shops.

Short Version: FF1's difficult is solely dependent on your party's composition, and a four fighter party will make FF1 one of the easiest RPGs you have played in your life.

Update: 16 hours and 12 minutes into the game, I'm finally at the World of Ruin and I am TICKED off. I was told, "Catch the fast fish and you can save Cid!" Well, I go to the beach and there's only one fish, which is moving pretty fast. I catch it, feed it to Cid, and guess what happens: HE DIES! Grrrr. Not that it makes a difference, it's just I was hoping to save his a$$. Oh well.

Yeah I always preferred to save Cid. A couple of times I reloaded a save before the fishing just so I could save Cid.

I've always felt that the whole WoR thing was a bit lame. Part of what I enjoy about RPGs is exploring a new world, and the WoR was, well, kinda empty. I loved the game up to that point, though, and I still think that FFVI has one of the best endings ever.

Once you're done with ff6, try going back and playing ff2. I was raised on FF2 and FF3, and I'd have to say if you appreciate the story of ff3, you'd like ff2. Oh yeah, Chrono trigger would probably float your boat also. the battle system is a little different, but in a good way. Oh, by the way, if memory serves me correctly, it doesn't really matter if you save Cid or not.

By FF2, do you mean the Nintendo version (FF2) or the Super Nintendo version (FF4: Easy)?

Loved the first FFs... the only one I've actually followed through and beaten is FF4... I borrowed FF6 from a friend and after like a week he wanted it back, didn't get a chance to play it a whole lot.

I need to give it another shot, once I finish playing through the Zelda series again... I'm on Ocarina of Time, almost done with it actually. I'll definately have to pick up or borrow Anthologies and play FF6 over again - the storyline was incredible for what little time I played it, that's for sure.

Final Fantasy VI, def the best FF out there. 7 comes close. I played on an emulator with a rom. I've heard the FFA version changes some things. I highly recommend either the original SNES or an emulated version of it. Plus, if you emulate, there's no load times! And there's save state. Which is cheating. So don't use it the first time around.

Celes is the best...Lightbringer+Hero Shield + Miracle Ring + Any decent armor (Minvera) - Unbeatable.

Man I really loved this game, I played it until the timer was 99:99 and my guys were all lvl 99.... Great ending, even saved shadow from the floating continent. Saved Cid also. All those general leo rumors had me going for a while tho. I had the cart for SNES when it first came out. Also Chocobos first were introduced into the FF series in FF2 for the nes.

26 hours, 30 minutes into the game, and FINALLY all I have to do is storm Kefka's tower. I must admit: I have a REALLY tough time at the Fanatics' Tower. Only being able to use magic really sucked; especially when most of the enemies there have Reflect casted upon themselves. If it weren't for Sabin having Life 3 w/ the gem box equipped, I wouldn't have beaten that boss. The mofo completely wipes out my team with Ultima before he dies. Luckily I had Sabin cast Life 3 on the entire team during the battle.

Little trick for the magic only tower is to use the sasquatch guy (sorry I can't remember his name) and don't equip him with the magic orb. Just equip him with the item that makes him go berserk. He will use all physical attacks and he kicks the crap out of the suckers in that tower. He is an absolute powerhouse in there. I always used him there when I played through the game.

Hrmmmmm reading all this good stuff really makes me want to play again....

DOH! I wondered what Umaro was good for. I swear...I wish I figured that one out. I wasted all my ethers, elixirs, and my megaelixer at that place, because it won't let you warp out of there! Argh!

Good strategy, though. Little too late for me, though.

the only thing i think FFA changes is the addition of CGI movies at some points. And the load times on the PSX were horrendous but in the PS2 you hardly even notice them. I love the cartriges too though. its so much cooler.

FF6 Is my favourite RPG of all time
I saved Shadow and Cid

I either finished the game with a team of:
Sabin, Celes, Terra and Edgar
or
Shaodw, Umaro, Mog, GoGo

Shadow and GoGo are my favourite Characters

N e one else use to glitch the game?
I use to remember Glitching the Snes, That was so much fun. It happened playing hours upon hours straight. Ppl also said if u cast Vanish on an enemy and then had Relm sketch them it would glitch.

Effects of the glitch were:
-The chars in the current battle would Temperarily change sprites (My Terra turned into General Leo, Hell i would have lost the battle cause no one could fight but I had Gau in a rage).
-Random Items were Lost ( I lost my atma weapon and tons of other stuff)
-Random Items were gained (I got 8 Illuminas(sp?), 49 Partisans, 20 messed up rows of Dirks, 30 minervas and tons more)
