Got Thief 3

Resounding MEH... It's supremely unstable... the character models look incredibly out of place compared to the ugly textures on the walls... the levels are extremely cramped (THANKS A LOT DX:IW ENGINE )

Honestly, if they had taken the Thief 2 engine, but implemented the new gameplay features that they have, I would be a bajillion times happier...

I really want to like this game, and find myself forcing myself to play it just to see if i'll like it... buuuut

meh

Lasereth 05-29-2004 06:44 AM

It's getting good reviews from every critic. One reviewer said it had the best level in any FPS ever! IGN did mention that the female character models looked really bad, though. I hear the game is really suspenseful.

I'd probably play it, but I never beat Thief 1, even though I thought it was an awesome game.

Thief 2 > Thief 3 > Thief 1

from THIS massive Thief fan

IMO The Gamespot review is BANG ON

Jesus Pimp 05-29-2004 04:23 PM

LOL I can see why Warren Spector recently left Ion Storm..

Hrothgar 05-29-2004 04:51 PM

Damn. I did read the gamespot review but It didn't exactly convince me to buy the game. Maybe when a demo comes out I will see if I like it.

Ace_O_Spades 05-29-2004 07:36 PM

I bought it before reading any reviews because I'm a Thief whore

im forcing myself to like it... but its hard

Maybe it was the whole staining the Deus Ex name with that trash known as Invisible War. On that note, I would like to point out that I called the quality of Thief 3 before its release here.

00111000 05-30-2004 12:46 PM

I'm gonna pick it up either way I figure. I've heard the good and the bad about it. Any one play the xbox version yet? Im still debating which one to pick up.

Lasereth 05-30-2004 05:47 PM

Everyone sure is saying how bad this game is, but the reviewers seem to think it's a damn good game. Has an 87% on www.metacritic.com . That's really high for an average!

Ace_O_Spades 05-30-2004 05:50 PM

I dunno... to me it just feels like a dumbed down game that they designed primarily for consoles... which is retarded since it's a PC franchise

Plus I dont think they could have picked a worse engine to base it on... What were they thinking?

Sunrise 05-31-2004 04:11 AM

I never played any of the previous versions
tried out the thief 3 demo, didn't really like it
it was cool how you could put out the flames with water arrows and so on.. but meh.... it's annoying how it loads different parts of the same level and other crap.. i dunno.. gets boring quick.. went around killing people, finding various things, not sure where to go next.. I couldn't make much use of the map.

One Sick Puppy 05-31-2004 06:33 AM

Just swinging the blackjack shows you how utterly incompetent Ion Storm is. The blackjack was one of the best things in the previous two games, needed absolutely no adjustments, yet in T3 you can't approach an opponent with the blackjack readied overhead = DUMB. Maybe I'm exagerating, or am missing something, but there's no excuse for underappreciating the blackjack... but if anyone could be so incompetent, it's Ion Storm. No wonder they're all getting fired.

While the sci-fi theme couldn't keep me going, System Shock 2 was an incredible game and much like Theif 2. I fully reccommend it for those that are looking for suspensefull, stealthy FPS.

the_marq 06-01-2004 06:56 AM

Yeah what was the deal with the blackjack? I wacked 4 or 5 people from behind with it and they all just laughed at me...one of them was a servent girl WTF?

I played the demo thru yesterday and I DEFINATELY will not be buying this game.

My other complaint may have just been ignorance on my part; but why once I started picking a lock could I not stop? I was breaking into a chest somewhere, I could hear someone approaching, but I could not get out of "lock pick" mode.

Sucky.

Johnny Rotten 06-01-2004 09:20 PM

Right-click or hit the ESC key to leave lockpicking mode. As for not being able to successfully blackjack someone, you were probably too close to them. You have to be about a step away, not breathing down their necks ;).

Ace_O_Spades 06-01-2004 10:35 PM

Yeah the blackjack really pissed me off

why did they change it? retards

Tusko 06-02-2004 04:09 PM

i actually liked it.

yes the blackjack was a little iffy this time around, but overall the game's phsyics were great.

i would really like to see a game like this, but a little more open ended.

something almost like Thief meets GTA

you could become a master thief through a number of ways:

simply stealing alot. (the x% bugged me. how did he know how much loot was in the place?)

you should be able to go around/break into to different houses/mansions/castles/inns and steal things. security would of course increase after multiple visits. You would sell your items on the black market, but, unlike in the game you woulnd't know what is valuable (your skill would increase as you gain xp or something) and you could better appraise things. Making what stuff you carry very important.

You could do missions, steal certain items from the rich man's house and bring it to so and so. This way you could chose who to work for... should you work for the theive's guild? Or should you work for the nobility stealing things back from the thieves. Or, if you're good, should you work for both?

And of coure there would be the straight up story missions. But these should be more varied and less scripted, i.e. you might only know about the location of such and such a jewel if you pass by a conversation at a certain time.

Ace_O_Spades 06-02-2004 05:43 PM

rune... you kinda described Thief 3

but they implemented it poorly

Tusko 06-02-2004 09:13 PM

really? haha ok, i guess thats cuz i only played the demo. lol.

marsfyre 06-02-2004 11:07 PM

you guys are being a bunch of whiny babys about this ... the game is really cool. You get all mad about this game and invisible war.. OMGz its not as good as the game before it@@@ WTF!(!#^#@ but if you put things into a realistic perspective, these games are still way better than 99% of the crappy games that come out these days. Its hard to be inovative and even harder to implement inovative features... in fact yuou shouldn't even complain at all about thsi game considering that there would be no theif three at all if not for ion storm.. jeeze, sorry if I'ma bit harsh but all this whining is really getting to me

hulk 06-03-2004 03:02 AM

Well, is it better to stop the series while it's good or release a whole line of sub-par sequels, damaging the franchise and your brand name?

My brain asploded when I tried to understand the above post.

Serpent 06-03-2004 08:25 AM

i played the demo for 2 minutes, and blackjacked a guy and it restarted the training. No theif 3 for me if i can'd do what i want to..

marsfyre 06-03-2004 11:09 AM

sorry about that guys.. it was just a little rant ^_^;

losthellhound 06-03-2004 11:34 AM

I almost bought the game last night.. then I remembered I dont have any money ;)

enough 06-04-2004 07:49 AM

I'm waiting for the price to drop on this one, but can't wait to play it. I hope my system specs are good enough!

I've got a few friends who got it and love it so far. The always walking unless you hack your ini thing is bothersome, but I really don't see any showstoppers for me from the impressions I've read. Keep the comments coming for us slouches too poor to buy the game right now! :)

Lacjack 06-06-2004 02:23 PM

I bought it and I really like it. Sure it's different then the previous games in the series, but they still did things well. The only thing i actually don't like is the ragdoll physics, if you blackjack someone usually they will fold backwards in what looks like spine breaking agony.

haha i laughed my ass off when i saw this the first time

i wish i was that flexible

skier 06-06-2004 08:44 PM

lol on the whole spine-breaking agony thing

I absolutely loved thief 2. Haven't been able to get Theif3 yet though. Are the missions and stuff more open-ended now? Do you have skill sets you can build up? I would love to play this with more of a morrowind feel to it.

Ace_O_Spades 06-06-2004 09:41 PM

No there are no skill sets

its just more open ended... you choose when you start missions, you can do side missions, mug people on the street instead... yadda yadda yadda

I would have killed for ONE wide open rooftop level (like the one in thief 2 where you need to break into the mechanist tower)

Halx 06-12-2004 01:16 AM

been playing this all tonight. It's engaging and fun. So far.

powerclown 06-17-2004 08:32 AM

Also been playing this for about a week now. My first Thief series game. This is a really cool, fun, well-developed game. Just picked up a set of climbing gloves and crawling all over the walls like a monkey, looking for loot. The ship mission with the undead was pretty damn unnerving, though too short. Loved the mansion mission. Sound effects are great, very very atmospheric. Better than SplinterCell 1&2 imo.

HunterDevourer 06-18-2004 06:11 AM

Found it great, big fan of all the Thief games. Maybe it wasn't as good as 2, but much better than what they could've done to it.

sailor 07-05-2004 05:21 PM

*Me resurrects the dead Thief thread*

Ive been playing it off and on for the past couple weeks... I like it. Its not perfect, not by any stretch, but it is fun. And the Cradle mission is effing scary. Like I-dont-want-to-turn-the-next-corner scary. Awesome level.

00111000 07-06-2004 04:43 PM

I picked it up last week and have been playing off and on. As usuall, I am very impressed with their level design and flow. My biggest problem is with the havok engine stuff. I loved it in painkiller, but dammit it has been pissing me off in Thief. Last night I blackjacked a guy right next to a door that was open, since they both had collision I was forced to jump over the guy I just el kabonged...this did not work so well as the collision on the top of my model was hitting the door. I kept ping-ponging and was put out of this misery by a nice wandering guard.

Other than this, I really like it. It's pretty creepy late night with headphones on :)

Scipio 07-06-2004 09:25 PM

It's ok. I never played thief 1/2, so I didn't expect it to live up to anything.

Getting around the city became much easier when I realized that the guard will never catch you if you just run away. On most levels, it's quite easy to kill all the enemies. Either blackjack and hide the corpse, or snipe with arrows. If you alert a guard, run and hide until they let down their guard, and repeat. The level design is hit and miss; the clock tower is retarded, most are mediocre. I'm going to stick it out to see how the story plays out.

bscox00 07-13-2004 05:50 PM

Well, all I can say is that although it is not as good as it could have been, it did maintain the creepy feel that set apart 1 & 2.

Some thoughts

(1) I'm glad they kept the haunts to a minimum. Too hard. I want to play like a real thief, not a supernatural thief.
(2) There are sites where you can download new textures for the bots, Garrett and basically the whole game. Not badly done.
(3) I'm just glad it runs at all on my PC. I've got a pretty decent system, but the GeForce4 4200 seemed to scare me. But, at 800x600 on my TV, it looks great. My 19" monitor died two months ago and I'm too cheap to get a new one.
(4) This game is certainly not as hard as the original Thief games were. I don't need a FAQ for this game. Now, whether that means the first two were too hard or this game is too easy is debatable.
(5) I'd like to have more freedom. Anybody ever play Wing Commander: Privateer? You could ignore the entire plot and just blast and make money. I'd like to have the option to be able to just steal from people.
(6) What kind of Thief doesn't go on roofs? Seriously. Bad design there.
(7) This game has had me moving in my seat. I'm physically trying to dodge an arrow.
(8) People - be patient. This isn't supposed to be doom3 or anything. The technology for this game is underdeveloped, but has plenty of potential. Ragdoll physics are realistic, as long as you don't mind the human body having bone and tendons... DX2 wasn't great, and T3 is better...perhaps T4 will be even better.
