For me the one that started it all D&D. I played others but none ever seemed to quite capture that same thing. It always drew the largest gatherings as well.

Mine would have to be Cyberpunk 2020. Many a late night was had with a few friends in my basement crouched in the middle of a black room with dim lights throwing dice and experiencing what we all thought the dark future was going to be.

Damn Straight was a home made RPG...

Won't give the name! I played a few flavours of RPG since then AD&D, Warhammer (easy names). But they did not compare to the game I played earlier...

PS: this game was 100% original.

I have forwarded this to that person, I may have been wrong

I always liked Shadowrun for its setting.

But I think AD&D planescape was the most fun.

D&D is always good for some laughs.

My favorite is Werewolf the Apocolypse. *Mean Growl* YES! Except that we have a couple of rule issues but what game doesn't.

On Gameboy Advanced: Golden Sun all the way baby.

Hey, someone said BGII...yeah. That was good, but long...the replay value goes down each time.

But definitely good. However, once you go to real D&D...you just can't go back...

Well maybe you can...

I love all the WoD series, but Werewolf holds a special place in my heart. Exalted is quickly usurping a place in my top list, I dunno something about that game just makes me giddy. I do also agree with hilburt, Shadowruns setting kicks ass, especially if you have Earthdawn and know the connections between the two.

Another vote for Shawdowrun here. Never played it much but I liked the system and setting more than any other tabletop game I've played. I played Palladium games the most but their system was retartedly complicated... D+D wasn't much better too.

I have several that I've played with, and each is likeable for it's own reasons:

Swords and Arrows- The RPG system that some friends of mine developed and are marketing themselves. This is what got me hard into role playing, and it was always alot of fun to see what manner of wierd shit we would come up with.
Dungeons and Dragons- The thing is huge. It has more possibilties than I ever know what to do with, but unfortunately that makes it too complicated if your DM is a rule-nazi.
The White Wolf system- I haven't played most of them directly, just Demon: The Fallen and Vampire: The Masquerade. However, with a good GM it's pretty easy to incorporate in Mage and Werewolf as well, so it's all kinds of crazy fun. Plus it's fun to play the bad-guy once in awhile and see what you come up with.

I'm more of a console RPG'er myself, but I played a little DnD when I was younger. And I played this rpg called Dragonstrike, it was kind of like HeroQuest. I liked Dragonstrike a lot though. My favorite console RPG is probably Final Fantasy 3, or Chrono Trigger.

The term RPG is quite difficult to define (for me anyway), would any of you consider the Myst series and Blade Runner (the videogame) to be RPG's?

I would probably have to go with Chrono Trigger. Akira Toriyama's artwork surrounded by a well told story made it the best RPG ever.

A close second would have to be Final Fantasy VII. It was the perfect mix of fantasy and technology, plus there were a lot of side quests that were just plain fun.

Fallout 1 and 2 rocked my world. I never like those fantasy one like Baulder's Gate. The best RPG would have 2 be System Shock 2. That game scared the fucking shit outta me!

D&D was great... Althought I like Blood of Heroes better. Super hero... Modern age... just loads of fun.

BTW if anyone is in Indiana, let me know I'll be gaming D&D a lot this summer, if you live near me perhaps you could join in.

Console wise? Chrono Trigger by far... but Golden Sun takes an easy second.

For more classifications, GTA3 and Myst would be defined as an Adventure Game. Myst would definetly be in that catagory but GTAIII leans both ways a bit, but is more Adventure than an RPG.

For the most part, RPGs involve Char. Stats and Raising them, and Adventure Games are solving Puzzles in the form of an Adventure (persay).

I've never played Blade Runner, so I have no clue on that one.

My favorite RPG (as far as consoles go) would probaly be the usual Final Fantasy VI (Or 3 in USA) or Chrono Trigger

You won't be disappointed with Chrono Trigger. On top of being the best RPG, it also has a sequel on Playstation 1. Chrono Cross, the sequel, is nearly as good as Chrono Trigger. I completely forgot to mention Chrono Cross, but it is an extremely high contender for best RPG ever. That game is amazing as well.

my favorite PNP (pencil and paper) RPG is of course D&D.
because it was my first RPG game and the one I have the most fondest memories of...

IMHO, the best, most solid, well thought out, PNP RPG was Mythus aka Legendary Journeys by Gary Gygax (creator of D&D). He even stated in the introduction that D&D was really just an experiment/(trial and error) and that this game was what D&D should have been. Unfortunately he was sued by TSR (D&D) the company he got ousted from and they won, causing the game to be pulled from the shelves... It had the best skills and combat system I've yet to see.

My favorite Computer RPG is a tie between the Myst Series and Asheron's Call.

I'm surprised to see the number of posts for digital RPGs. For my money, it doesn't get any better than a late night of pizza, coke, and....

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Heroes Unlimited (and btw included the Robotech franchise in the same game system), and all of the other associated games that were created around it. This was a really advanced, hard core PnP rpg.

Nobilis is the most beautiful.

Unknown Armies has the most incredible setting.

Godlike has the best system.

CoNTINUUM is the most intelligent.

Earth Dawn has the best fantasy world.

Little Fears and Call of Cuthulu tie for best horror RPG.

Overall though... I think I have to give the grand prize to Mage: The Ascension. It has the best of everything, and I've been playing it for so long it's very near and dear to my heart.

I gotta go with Final Fantasy VII. And no, I did not get my name from Cloud. I love VII. I need to play it again now that I think about....hm....*Trundles off* How can you not dig the battle music for that game. Oh, and I never really got into any PNP RPGs, I tried DnD but, never got into it.
Final Fantasy VII or X for that matter, just becuase it was so well done. (Voice, graphics, etc.) Another one of my favorites was/is Suikoden II. And last but definatly not least Xenogears.
