My most treasured game is Secret of Mana for super nintendo, it was one of the first multiplayer RPG game i ever played

fishman22 05-19-2003 01:48 PM

Shining Force all teh way baby ahh gotta luv the sega days :)

Steviefranchise 05-19-2003 02:15 PM

I always like the RPG where you played Marvel super heroes. There was this other one I think was called Rune Quest (or something close). I wish PNP RPG was still popular, that was fun to use the old imagination.

archer2371 05-19-2003 02:17 PM

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, best RPG EVER!

Moonduck 05-19-2003 07:25 PM

Hmm. Fluff first, then Crunch.

PC - BGII for modern, Wasteland for classic.
Console - GTA3

With the unimportant stuff outta the way...

I am a PnP RPG nut.

Currently in passionate lust with - "Adventure!" by White Wolf. It rocks so damn hard. Best thing they've put out, hands down.

Lusting from afar - Mage. (Played in one friggin Mage game since I got a pre-release copy of First Ed. No one locally has the horsepower to run it, dammitall.)

Beergoggling towards - Heroes Unlimited, TMNT, Rifts and all the rest of those Palladium games that I secretly dig but won't admit it unless I'm drunk.

Love it like my Grandma - D&D, of course. It's the Gateway Drug that got us all into PnP.

The "One book that I must have if I'm stuck on a desert island" - Hero System 5th Ed and a crap-tonne of d6's. Hero can do anything, and do it right.

--

I am finishing a D&D 3E game set in Sword and Sorcery's (that's White Wolf) Scarred Lands setting. Best setting I've seen for D&D, hands down. Getting ready to run some beer and peanuts type chop-socky jung fu theatre next, using Palladium's Mystic China.

Life is Short. Roll High.

shalafi 05-21-2003 12:34 PM

Right now im playing a dnd 3e Forgotten Realms campaing, a Spycraft campaign, and we just started X crawl which is really pretty fun its like dnd meets the WWF.

Moonduck i havent seen Mystic China but if you wanna do some hong kong kung fu theatre power gaming check out Feng Shui (assuming they still make it) thats what that game was all about.

iRtehCrispeh 05-22-2003 08:27 AM

Well my fav paper would be D&D (its actually the only paper 1 ive played besides Riffs which wuz incredibly lame!)

Console would be BGII it wuz much better then the 1st!

Moonduck 05-22-2003 11:46 AM

Heard about Feng Shui, but I REALLY have to be impressed with a game before I shell out the cash-ola.

Xcrawl is cool though.

blandestsounds 05-22-2003 04:16 PM

Diablo 2
earthbound is awesome and if you own it like i do its worth $60 or more
ffvii

sharked_3 05-23-2003 09:36 AM

best rpg game is the dragonquest series.
not as successful as FF but huge in japan.

but i'd be a fool to forget wizardry

Kadath 05-23-2003 09:49 AM

Tabletop: I've done most of it. D&D, Earthdawn, TMNT, Superheroes Unlimited, Shadowrun, on and on. Right now we're big into Deadlands:Wasted West from Pinnacle Entertainment Group. PEG hasn't been doing so well lately, so all the Deadlands stuff is selling for real cheap, good time to get into it. It's post-apocalyptic, with guns and magic and melee. It's the closest I've seen to the spirit of Fallout.
Video game: That's really tough. I've got a soft spot for old school Might&Magic, and the old D&D games, but Fallout 2 was pretty incredible, as was BG2. Black Isle is fucking amazing.

Todders2003 05-24-2003 12:24 PM

baldur's gate 1 and 2, and Morrowind had me literally absolutely hooked for about 3 months each, i could hardly think of anything else!

Maveric 05-24-2003 01:51 PM

seems like there's a lot og RPG gamers here, I gotta question for ya-

which do you think is better and why - A class based system or a skills/ powers template system? (or any other system for that matter)

Janki 05-25-2003 09:16 AM

Anyone mention Planescape: Torment?

That was a good RPG...lots of story and sides...And I mean lots.

dim5 05-25-2003 09:05 PM

I loved Planescape: Torment. The overall story (and the depth of the dialogue trees) in that game make it better than many highly regarded novels, in my opinion.

It's too bad that the team that made Torment hasn't been able to create another game in its image. I'm not looking for a sequel, mind you, but Baldur's Gate II just wasn't the same kind of game.

Maybe Lionheart will be it. Who knows?

gili_666 05-25-2003 10:09 PM

someone mentioned mythus, that game was real good. character generation would take ages..and you really got somebody that felt right. very deadly combat system though.

favourite game would definitely be DnD, have only just start getting into it again. after a few years break ( damn girlfriends ! ).

done quite abit of cyberpunk2020, which was also cool.

some other games, i played/runned a little...which were fun desperado's/it came from the late late late show/chill/mechwarrior

Moonduck 05-25-2003 10:31 PM

I think the Class-based vs Skills-based depends on what genre you are running. In fantasy games, where roles are sharply defined by the tenets of the genre, class-based works fine. Most other genres function better in skill/template-based systems, IMO.

Nooze2k 05-26-2003 08:32 AM

Panzer Dragoon Saga for the good ol Sega Saturn. Still hoping they make a true sequel for a next gen system. Yeah, Orta is cool and all, but it was the story that made Saga so great.

Janki 05-26-2003 08:47 AM

What is this Lionheart I hear speakage of? If it's anything like Planescape...That'd be cool...

I mean, you got experience for just asking people things...that makes ...sense! ...And is cool.

Oh for a good RPG...

And yeah, BGII wasn't anything like it...Though I played Ps:T after.

dim5 05-27-2003 10:11 PM

Lionheart is being made by Reflexive/Interplay. Think Fallout, except in a medieval setting with what sounds to be a cool backstory with lots of history. It's been delayed a few times, and is now scheduled to be out in the fall.

Troublebot 05-28-2003 07:20 AM

Fallout 1 and 2 and Fallout:Tactics.

Fallout 3 (or some form of Fallout) is coming out this fall for the PS2. I'm looking forward to it.

mykockle 05-28-2003 07:23 AM

Definatly FF III (or IV i think in Japan). From that point on I pretty much played or am playing every (decent) RPG available.

hawkeye 05-28-2003 08:47 AM

Planescape: Torment

J-Dubs 05-28-2003 06:19 PM

I like the Fallout Series also, I am playing through FOT again right now.

I also liked Phantasy Star and Shining in the Darkness.

w4r gam3z 05-30-2003 05:10 AM

so many good rpg's =( but...there are alot of bad ones too....especially today. i have yet to find a good rpg since fft. well maybe nwn and elder scrolls III. i live for fft and ff7. i hate 8, 9, and 10 looks decent although im too cheap to buy a ps2 to play it.

as for some other good ones, id put chrono cross, star phantasy, star ocean!! =DDD and my favorite mmorpg UO (until dragon empires is release)

dim5 05-30-2003 07:35 PM

Troublebot, the Fallout game that's coming out this fall (Fallout Enforcer) has about as much to do with Fallout 1 and 2 as Starship Troopers the movie had to do with Starship Troopers the book. All of the coverage I've seen indicate that Fallout Enforcer is most definitely NOT an RPG, and is a Fallout game in name only.

Stiltzkin 05-30-2003 07:42 PM

I guess since the majority of the games I play are RPG's, it'd be ok for me to post in this thread. Strife only briefly mentioned Xenogears, but failed to mention how truly fraggin' awesome it is. I've yet to see any other RPG with a deeper storyline. Its that what RPG's are about; storyline? You have FPS for mindless entertainment, and RTS if you're feeling in the mood to build an army to kick some ass, but if you wanna sit back and have an awesome story be told to you... well isn't that what RPG's are all about? I also like FF7, FF8 (3rd disk has the best story development), FF9 was ok (Stiltzkin rules!!), and FF10 (my friends says FF3 also kicks ass but I've yet to play it), I've played most of Chrono Trigger and it kicks ass (never had time to really finish it), Chrono Cross (although a bit weaker than Chrono Trigger, still pretty good), Parasite Eve (truly awesome, and finally a female lead!), I bought Parasite Eve 2 recently although I haven't played it yet, uhh... what else. Brave Fencer Musashi kicked too much ass, Tomba and Tomba 2 were pretty good. I'm currently playing Xenosaga Episode 1 and its damn good so far, and Kingdom Hearts is currently on my to-do list (I have the game, just haven't played it yet) Still, I'd have to say that Xenogears pwns all other RPG's.

Vaultboy 06-02-2003 12:17 AM

1. FALLOUT. My nick should prove that I believe that much. (BIS)
2. BG2 +TOB
3. Blade Runner
4. Nomad Soul

Funky Koval 06-03-2003 08:13 AM

1. Betrayal at Krondor
2. Morrowind
3. Arcanum
4. Eye of the Beholder

TheDave87 06-04-2003 06:19 AM

never really was into PnP RPGs.... i always sat in front of the TV for my RPGing goodness... so id have to say that EarthBound for the SNES was my favorite, and my vote for best

silas 06-04-2003 08:21 PM

Ultima 7 - both parts.
Morrowind

I've played and enjoyed lots of others, but those are the first ones that popped to mind.

rockzilla 06-05-2003 11:17 AM

Gotta agree with Stiltzkin about Xenogears, no other game has sucked up so much of my time and made me like it. My first time through, I lost my save file about 25 hours in, I then put it aside to spend more time with Metal Gear Solid, which I also lost the save file for. Once I got back to where I had left off in Xenogears though, I couldn't stop. I didn't even mind that the second disc is 20 hours of slowly scrolling text and about 2 hours of gameplay.

Dragon Quest 5 + 6 are both excellent, never got to try 7 since my PS would freeze up when i tried to play it. And Final Fantasy Tactics provided me with tons of fun, can't wait for the sequel on GBA.

Diablo 2 sucked up a lot of my time too, but I felt more like a Las Vegas slot machine zombie playing it, you know, click on the monsters, get the treasure, it's all crap, sell it, lather, rinse, repeat.
