Action Replay - Friend or Foe
OK everyone, sound off on AR. Are you pro or are you con?
Personally, I use AR. In games like PGR2 I don't have a problem with it, you can unlock a car but that doesn't give you skills to go along with the unlock. However, games like RTCW have been RUINED by punks with cheats. So AR fails there. What do you think?

I don't cheat on games no matter which type they are. I'm 100% against GameShark type hardware and even in-game cheats. I hate strategy guides, too (unless I think I found a glitch and want to see if the game is fucked). That's just my opinion though!

My Xbox died last week (Thomson DVD drive went out.).
So, I had to find a way to get my saves moved from the old Xbox to the new one. The nice thing about Action Replay is that you can copy your saves to the memory card and save them to your computers harddrive. The problem is that a lot of the game saves are somehow tied to the serial number of the original Xbox and wouldn't work on the new one. In this case I think I'm justified in using AR to at least get my games back to where they were at before the crash. This is the only time I cheat. And yeah, you're right. The guys who've unlocked all the cars on Project Gothem Racing using AR really don't have any skills driving them cuz they didn't earn them and tend to bounce all over the place like a bumber car when racing so it really didn't do anything for them. |

I agree and disagree with both arguements.
Lasereth, I applaud you for never using cheats! I usually don't, but in the case of PGR2 I did use AR. I beat everything on Gold, and there was no way I was going to take the time offline (play 100% online with friends now) to beat it on Platinum. So I used AR. First time I ever used AR. Since them I have gone back and used it on Dynasty Warriors which was put down about 50% completed. New life to an old game there. Dibbler, I agree 100% with MOST AR users not having skills. However, there are some like myself that got as far as they could (albiet without putting 100% time and effort into it) that did manage to get some skills. However, I FULLY admit I didn't beat the game unlike 90% of the other AR users. Funny thing is, people accuse AR in PGR2 of giving skill, there is no such thing. Skill is skill, and a car is a car. If you can't drive the 12 Speed I can kick your ass with delfino! (Not yours specifically, yours in a general usage.)

I've never used action replay, but I do own a sharkport. In my case the one thing I've used it for lately is getting game saves my Smackdown HCP game. I only download game saves with CAWs(Create-A- Wrestler) on them. If I can get a memory card save with the CAWs on it that have stats, moves, etc already done, well why should I spend 5-7 hours re-creating them on my own?
The other reason I've used it is like Dibbler said, I have Kingdom Hearts I've beat the game twice but I never beat it and managed to unlock all the parts required for the "extra" ending. So what did I do, I downloaded a save that has met all those requirements. Do I feel bad about that? not in the least. 3rd I use it is b/c I'm well cheap I only have 1 memory card for my ps2. I just keep saves from games I'm not using on my pc and if I fill like playing the game later with that save, I can just go back and get off my pc. No, "Damn, I can't play this new game I just bought b/c my memory card doesn't have enough space" problems for me Finally back to the Action Replay, my Xbox crapped out on me a while back, it had a Thompson drive too, and I had to get a new one I really wish I had some way to had some way to keep all of those old game saves, instead I have to play through the games again to get my stuff back. In some games that isn't bad, in others its a pain in the ass...

I thought Action Replay was a device to let you store game saves for your Xbox, am I wrong? How is storing game saves cheating?

No, you can also download other peoples shared saves off the internet. However, there have been a number of people that have made "source code changes" with modded xboxes that allow cheats that aren't normally possible. RTCW is one example where you can have unlimited ammo, be invinceable, and also fly. Basically killing the game.
Some others complain about PGR2 because you can download fully completed games (ie all cars and tracks unlocked).

I'd guess not. The people behind Pro Action would mostly want to milk people for their money thus making a seperate product for the PS1.

I play most games without a strategy guide. But then if it's the kinda game where you can play more with all your stuff, aka Zelda : Majora's Mask, then I'll go back with a guide to the the 100% game.

When I had my gameshark, I would use it to play my way through a game after I had beat it normal like. For instance, Resident Evil 2. after I went through the game twice with Clair, twice with Leon, I used my gameshark to give Clair the electric beam gun thingy, and infinite ammo and an accelerated firing rate on it. SOOO fun, frying every zombie with a constant stream of eletricity.

I just use to to re-beat games, or to speed up a collection process that would take FOREVER. For example, Dynasty Warriors 3. I've been playing the game off and on for about 2-3 years I think, and I still have PLENTY of items and weapons to obtain. So sometimes, I'll just load up a health cheat and slash away.
