HELP!!! I can't decide!

Hey all, here is my problem. I just built a new system and I want to put it through the test with a new game. I have been looking at either Call of Duty, Halo, or Max Payne. I really like first person shooters and war games. I am looking for something new with good graphics and sound. I have been kinda swaying towards call of duty from reading reviews. But I couldn't think of a better place to get help. Let me know what you guys think or if there is a game I am missing that I should consider! Thanks in advance!

Just to let you know, Halo (even if its a good game or not) will seriously push your hardware. It's a huge resource hog. So if you wanna see how much your CPU could handle you could probably do worse than Halo.

Rudel73 11-14-2003 09:19 AM

Actually kraz, i'm running 1.3 ghz 386 ram, and GeForce 4 Ti4400 and have no problems with the game at all. My brothers computer with lower specs has no problems with the game either, it just doesn't look as nice as it does on mine because i have the nicer vid card.

I'd reccomend Halo of course, its a sweet FPS game that very replayable and the multiplayer is quite fun!

If you want an all around War game check out World War 2 Online(its MMORPG so monthly fee) its basicly a half scale model of europe on a constant map and you fight out WW2...you can be infantry (fps) tanks planes Anti tank guns etc...very very fun doesn't get old fast like some other games might.

See that's weird I'm running a higher system although I guess it is a penitum. . . oh well. Anyway with my system I experience serious framerate slowdown especially when I got about a million aliens on the screen. I have to take down my specs for it to run smooth, especially online.

Weird anyway maybe it's just me

2.5ghz
512mb ram
128mb GeForce 4

If you're going to play halo, i think its more fun on the xbox in surround sound on a big tv, but thats just me..

Of those other two I'd go with max payne, just because hes such a badass. And I've played through BF1942 and MOHAA so im a bit tired of WW2... Plus bullet time is always fun, and the cut scenes in max payne rule...

Also, cool fast firing guns in Max Payne

Buk 11-14-2003 10:35 AM

Buy Call of Duty, its a better overall game

theburner 11-14-2003 10:41 AM

I have a buddy @ Bungie that said most of the Halo PC issues are with regards to the Graphics cards not exactly the system they are running on. Before someone get's all excited and says they have a 128 DDR Card, it isn't the spec of the card but the manufacturer. I can't elaborate because I can't remember the particulars.

dragon2fire 11-15-2003 09:10 PM

to play computer geek for a sec

if you update the drivers on your card it should fix most issuses

SSJwrestler 11-16-2003 12:59 AM

Halo takes the cake by far...no comparison

BulletCatcher 11-16-2003 03:20 AM

I'd pick Call of Duty. It won't test your system like the other 2 but is more fun in my opinion.

Now this is a game that will test your system. It doesn't look as pretty as COD, Halo or Max but there's more depth than than all of them combined. The massive scale will take your PC to the limit and then some.

You can even give it a try free of charge. CLICK HERE This is a 14 day free trial that gives you unlimited access to the full game. ***CAUTION*** Quake Kiddies and '1337 haxxor dudes' need not apply. This is not a game for a quick frag fix or for showboating you mad skillz. Patience is a virtue and teamwork a must if you want succeed here.

Halo, it's awesome on the xbox, and on the comp its even better.

RogueHunter65 11-16-2003 11:38 AM

I had a problem with Halo running on my PC as well but if you go into the display options for the game and tweak them the game will run perfectly. So just adjust the setting and it will be fine. Halo is deffinately the way to go.

I downloaded it and am playing the free trial now, you move very slow and there isn't a lot of action and there are a lot of controls to master, i don't think im going to play it much more i'm too used to fast paced games like counter-strike to like it a lot.

Johnny Rotten 11-16-2003 01:42 PM

CoD and Max Payne 2 both have short but intense play times. Halo will keep you busy for a lot longer, but it's also padded artificially with lots of potentially disorienting back-tracking through previous areas. Halo multiplayer has a maximum of 16 players, but the maps are designed for a smaller number of players anyway. CoD has very intense multiplayer that will extend the life of the purchase more than Max Payne 2.

The short answer: It depends.

losthellhound 11-16-2003 08:17 PM

Homeworld 2 will push graphics and such, but I'd agree with Call of Duty for a new system test, and because the game also kicks ass.. When I build a new system I always play the same thing, to test it.. Galaga 88. ;)

Pedialyte 11-16-2003 09:10 PM

In my opinion Halo for pc is absolute junk... i wouldnt waste your money. Call of Duty is a blast and just a plain good game, nothing that will UBER tax your pc though. Max payne 2 rules as well. Probably doesnt help you much but I thought i would throw in my 3 cents about halo being a half baked piece of crap for PC. I would recommend one (or both) of the other 2.

cas305 11-17-2003 12:25 PM

Thanks for all your help guys, ended up getting CoD. When I read Halo had cut out the coop for the pc I boycotted it. Still was tough decision but wanted something with multiplayer so CoD won. Would of replied sooner put was playing it all weekend!!!!! :)

Help me pick a game for my new computer

Hello,

I'm getting a new laptop that is supposed to be top of the line from what I've heard. The computer I'm on now hasn't had a working CD drive for about 3 years and I'm way behind on the times. I really like RPGs, and I wonder what you'd suggest I get considering that I haven't seen anything for 3 years.

IckUber 11-17-2003 02:11 PM

Well it depends on what games you like. In my opinion you should check out these games:

Halflife (and the mods)
Starcraft
Warcraft III
Diablo II
Return to Castle wolfenstine
Black and White
Simcity 4
Final Fantasy XI (online, pay to play, MMORPG)
Solitare!!!!

BuddyHawks 11-17-2003 03:21 PM

Call of Duty
No one Lives Forever 2
Freedom Force
GTA Vice City
Dungeon Siege

Will you have internet connection?
Yes?
Well then get Battlefield 1942 and expansions.

BulletCatcher 11-17-2003 06:19 PM

If your looking for RPG's...

Balders Gate series
Neverwinter Nights
Fallout series
Morrowind
Icewind Dale series
Everquest

Some of them are old so you might have already played them but if not then it's a good place to start.

wilbjammin 11-17-2003 06:27 PM

I've played Fallout 1 and it was ok. I had trouble with Balder's Gate because the plot didn't do much for me. One game I really liked back in the day was Betrayal at Krondor. I do like story-based games, with strategy, and a touch of the unusual. I liked Torment, that was the last RPG I had that worked. I've been playing RPGs since they were text-based DOS games, so I really get bored when it is a repetition of the same plot-line stuff over and over and over and over again.

heccubusiv 11-17-2003 09:39 PM

Medal of Honor is good to test how good the pc is... if you like sport Madden 2004 looks really good an a Pc... Warcraft 3 with expasnion pact are good choices also. Also Doom 3 and Half-life 2 will put your machine to the test when they finally come out

Stare At The Sun 11-18-2003 09:17 AM

Half Life and mods
Starcraft
Warcraft III
Medal of honor and Battlefield 1942
Max Payne (action but lots of fun)
Neverwinter nights

supafly 11-18-2003 10:00 AM

I would go for Call of Duty, but thats personal.

mrquackers 11-18-2003 10:58 AM

Truth be told, you can't go wrong with any of those three games. I'd highly recommend all three. Start with whichever is cheapest.

Mael 11-18-2003 06:03 PM

star wars: knights of the old republic comes out on computer really soon, i think before the end of the month. just bought it for the x-box myself, should be sweet.

bundy 11-19-2003 04:45 PM

i reckon you should go for Morrowind, Halflife and SimCity4.
to start with - haha... its an addiction...

Wyodiver33 11-19-2003 04:57 PM

The Simpsons: Hit and Run!!! $25 for a 3-cdrom game at Best Buy!!! Great game.

wilbjammin 11-25-2003 09:04 PM

Ok, tomorrow is the day!

I'm thinking of getting The Temple of Elemental Evil (with Icewind Dale free) and Morrowind.

What do you think?

TheShadow 11-25-2003 09:56 PM

Fallout 2 is exponentially better than the first Fallout. If you liked the idea behind the game, but had a dislike for a minor aspect of how the game was made, Fallout 2 will be one of the greatest games you'll play.

Edit: I meant a dislike for something in the first Fallout. ;)

I'm also going to recommend Neverwinter Nights. Great game. oh, and I hear Morrowwind is good.

wilbjammin 11-25-2003 10:02 PM

I actually have Fallout 2, the last game I got before my CD-ROM crashed years ago. I enjoyed it... briefly!

Nefir 11-25-2003 10:06 PM

If you like X-COM or Jagged Alliance (anything other than a "hell yes" will result in immediate death by catapult, for it is blasphemous), SILENT STORM may be the game for you! :)

twister002 11-25-2003 11:20 PM

I'd get Civilization III and the latest expansion pack (Conquests).

You'll get your moneys worth out of it. "Just one more turn, then I'll go to bed I've almost got Gunpowder"

dragon2fire 11-27-2003 05:10 PM
