to be honest at first i thought "doh this could be it, blizzard very first big bomb".

and im a huge fan of blizzard and mmorpgs.

but now im really looking forward to it.
primarily for one single reason.

in an interview with blizzard one after asked what they wanted different from their mmorpg, they said something to the effect of: The player should be concerned about just gaining a new level, they should be having alot of fun doing others things and then all of a sudden found that theyve lvled up.

from then on i have been a big supporter.

i hear FFXI is awesome though because it actually has a single player goal along with an actual "last boss" type battle with it as well..
thats great.

FFXI IMO is just a level-treadmill with no real style, poor graphics housed in a Final Fantasy shell.

I will definitely be playing WoW as a Blizzard game has never sucked and the style and the gameplay mechanics of it looks amazing, possibly catering to my playing preference as well. It also has the Blizzy signature touch of humor to it that I'm sure Square can't get out.

Imagine fighting gigantic, detailed Pit Lords and Void Demons with a group of ragtag adventurers that don't look like Japanese supermodels :-P

I'll see you all in Azeroth

Absoloutly hands-down getting this game when it comes out. Actually, I'm going to take that a step further and sign up for the beta. Or even further, and break into the Blizzard offices in the dead of the night and steal the most up-to-date copy they have.

I gotta lie down.

You're paying for added features in the game, constant updates, 100% technical support, online play, and additions to the game that are made usually by the month. Why do we only pay once for non-MMORPGs? Well, how many single player games do you play a hundred hours per month for a year straight that has bonus features added every month, tech support, features added every month, the ability to play with thousands of people at one time, and have fun while doing it? None. That's why single player games are $40, and MMORPGs have a monthly fee.

Don't get me wrong, I love single player games and I play them more than MMORPGs, but MMORPGs aren't a rip off unless you do it yourself. If you don't like it, then cancel the subscription. If you like it, then it's not a rip off.

Maintaining a lot of servers, reparing them, etc costs money. Constant updates and bug fixes cost money. New content and features cost money. Good customer service costs money.

yeah I dont stick with MMO's unless the company makes some semblance of action resembling customer service.

i mean lets face it, you pay 50$ for the game

after that the monly fee's are not for the game but rather i portend that its a 50/50 split.

say im paying 12$ a month on a game, I like to think that 6$ of that is keeping my account maintained and having it save my progress every time I play, the other 6$ I would like to think is keeping people working on bug fixes and dealing with customer service.

EQ has pretty good response times, but rarely were able to actually do anything to help you. but they were still the best as far as in game support.

UO has shafted me more times than not

SWG, well, it doesnt exist, as the most expensive MMO out there, they dont answer a single trouble ticket OR come out with any worthwhile bug fixes. infact they've released too many bug fixes that have hosed peoples installations and had to revert when they noticed half thier players just disappeared.

anyways I hear really good stuff about FFXI and well, judging from battle.net, I kinda worry about WoW.

anyone remember how bad battle.net was when it 1st started?

yeah..........

Aside from your 1000 of people at once... I can answer you. As for that 1000 of people at once.. I've play a small part of MMO's.. currently I'm doing a bit of EQ.. and I have yet to PLAY with 1000 people.. I might see 1000 people sitting in town making a giant chat room with avs... but to PLAY with them... it has yet to get bigger than any normal game I own. The one exception would be PlanetSide, but I make sure I don't get that game solely because I know not only would it use up my free time, but also the time that I don't have. Shit I already use up time I don't have.. planetside would only make things worse! heh. For one game with constant updates, good tech support, blah blah blah.. Check out Purge: Jihad. Everything you stated.. the publisher sucked ass and thus no one heard about the game. Definately worth your money, and its only like 35 bucks.. and I do believe there is a 5 dollar coupon for it floating on the net somewhere.

BattleField? I have yet need to ask Tech Support, I play in games with 50-60 people... I play that A LOT. Oh I should mention Tribes2, anyone that knows me knows I have logged millions of hours into that game. There are some nifty mods which are basically like expansions for that game.

I'm not here to say MMO's suck.. I'm trying EQ.. I can't do that until AFTER the account goes down. I'm just here to point out that there are lots of single buy games that I have logged TONS of hours in. You said none, I just want to show different.

As for WoW? I dunno sounds kinda neat, but again i'm not a huge MMO player, I'll see how things go with EQ.. if its good, I might try out WoW if I hear lots of good reviews. Personally I really want to try out City of Heroes.

Oh, I understand that single player games can get ya addicted. I played through Final Fantasy 7 twice with 99 hours on both files. Hell, I played SSX Tricky almost every single day/week until SSX3 came out and I bought Tricky on opening day.

I'm just saying that for the time you must spend on MMORPGs, most single player games don't last that long. I had 1,600 hours on my Ranger on EQ. The average Final Fantasy game takes 40-50 hours to beat if you're a gamer. 1,600 compared to 40 is a bit contrasting! My ranger was only level 50 as well. I still had many, many hours to go.

There are many great single player games out there that last a damn long time (Xenogears, Grandia, etc.), but I've never played one that I spent more than 200 hours on, much less 1600. Ha ha, maybe I just play MMORPGs too much?

WoW will be a good game, I trust blizzard as much as i trust square, blizzard also has a better track record with games, ive boght and enjoyed ALL of them. Unlike Square. Either way, out of lack of money, ill have to just play one MMORPG.

FF11 is a good MMORPG for people who are new to MMORPG, thats about it. As far as WoW, well, that will most likely be the best thing in MMORPG history since UO based on the time invested in it as well as the things I have read about it.

i'm lookin forward to have a good MMORPG to play again. i quit EQ a few years ago and havent found a game that has really taken ahold of me like it since, but there is no way i'd go back to EQ, it was DEFINITELY time to leave that sinking ship...

Yeah. I quit a year and a half ago and don't regret it one bit. I don't want to imagine how bad the players are on it now. They were bad enough to make me want to quit then...I imagine it's only got worse.

There is already a large FFXI thread, which you can post all sorts of praise for FFXI, on. This is a thread that was specifically created for World of Warcraft, and by posting only vague praise for another game, without any sort of real information, you aren't really helping the thread out at all. If you like something about FFXI and hope that it is implemented in WoW, or dislike that it will not be implemented in WoW, post that. That would stimulate discussion and get some ideas and comments floating around. Of course, it's not against the rules to post "Why play WoW when you can play FFXI?", but imho it really isn't a worthwhile contribution.

I have no intention of ever playing FFXI, for a variety of reasons. I have friends who have played it (past tense), and I've played EverQuest for three years (perhaps the worst failure of any mmorpg as far as the customer is concerned), and really don't trust Square to do a good enough job to warrant me paying monthly and investing huge amounts of time into a character.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a new WoW update for those who don't check the Blizzard site every couple of days. Trolls and Gnomes have been added to the Town Hall and there is a Tradeskills page hidden away.

edit: removed crankiness
