What the hell is going on? What are Microsoft and Xbox up to? I heard there is some major announcement that is going to made! Does anybody know whats up? Is this the day they are going to apologize for "Aquaman: Battle For Atlantis" or something more important? I even heard there is a commercial with P-Diddy announcing something "important?" Who can shed light on this? Thanks

TerresqueÜ 11-12-2003 06:42 PM

I think people don't know more about it becuase not so many people care about XBox. No offence.

Just as many people care about XBox as the other consoles.

I haven't heard anything about a major announcement but I would LOVE to hear what it is. If anyone does find out if they are indeed announcing something, be sure to post it ASAP!

The rumor (and it is just a rumor, don't quote me on this :) ) I've been hearing is that they are releasing Halo 2 which Bungie has been secretly developing just for this occasion.

Doubt it.

I agree 100%.

Krycheck 11-12-2003 11:08 PM

Why are there so many Xbox haters?

I have one and I love it. Granted it may not have the franchise games that PS2 has but it has some great games with some great graphics

Is it just that it's a M$ product?

Tiser 11-13-2003 01:04 AM

Its a hack attempt at a console that only recieved any success that it has due to MS's enourmous marketing and developer smootching budget.

NeverBorn 11-13-2003 02:48 AM

Wow..do I have to dig up the Fanboys thread..

YaWhateva 11-13-2003 08:17 AM

Shut up with the fanboy thing, I am definitely not a fanboy. If someone doesnt like something does that make them a fanboy? shit its annoying already. The XBox is not a good console. period.

Halo 2 rumor

Mon, November 10 2003 - 9:51 AM
by: Gabe

People keep mailing me about this Halo 2 rumor that is making the rounds. Since we happen to live so close to Microsoft Tycho and I have had the opportunity to go over there quite a few times. We've made some great contacts there and I decided I'd just go right to the people who would know. One of our contacts at MS told us it's unfortunately not true. Halo 2 is 2004 he says.

That isn't to say they don't have something cool planned for the anniversary of the system launch but it doesn't look like it will be Halo 2.
Eh, nothin' definate, MS may have decided to not let them in on the real truth... thought i'd throw it out there tho.

mrquackers 11-13-2003 11:44 AM

Checked this out through work (obligatory reminder: I cover the gaming industry for a major media outlet). The rumors started because Prima added a listing for a Halo Deluxe Stratgy Guide (I forget the exact wording right now). This led to the Halo 2 early rumors - which are about as wrong as wrong can be, as that game has slipped until mid-year, according to developers I've talked with.

Phase two of the rumor was a revamped Halo, with a few new levels and the ability to play online. Easier to swallow, but also false. Microsoft would be cutting the legs out from under Halo 2 with that (and they've said this publicly).

It turns out that Deluxe Prima guide is just a revised version of their current guide, with extra material that relates to the PC version.

Sorry guys. :(

The XBox is doing very well in the US right now, much better than anyone could have expected. I'll admit that it's uses range from playing a few dozen great games all the way to installing an OS on it, but it doesn't make it a bad system. It has plenty of good games, which leads to the Lasereth Theory of Bad Systems®: a console sucks if you play the bad games for it and the console is good if you play the good games for it. That theorem can literally show how every console is good. Well, unless the console has NO good games, and that's never happened in the console industry. It's been close with a few early nineties systems, but since then every console has been great.

Wasn't there an ad where you see Master Chief's helmet with the Live Logo ring reflected in it, then "Nov 15" flashes up on screen and the ad ends?

Good console or not, I have one word for you guys.... Microsoft! They will find a way to screw you end of story. Just like they did with halo when it should of been released on the PC long ago. Don't get me wrong they make good products but their business tactics have much to be desired!

Its called capitalism, you know the desire to make money to make a better living for yourself...

BulletCatcher 11-15-2003 10:27 PM

So what was the big announcement? I haven't seen anything posted on any gaming site.

theburner 11-17-2003 12:20 PM

Not sure what the announcement is/was... But I can tell you 100% don't expect Halo2 before Fall '04. Bungie Studio's won't guarantee ANYTHING but delivery in 04. As of 3 weeks ago they didn't even have one level completed. All of them are started, but none are completed.
And.. About not releasing Halo to PC before the Xbox?? The whole reason was money.. Pure and simple money. They had to give people a reason to buy an Xbox, and Halo was that reason. A pretty damn good reason if I say so myself.

cas305 11-17-2003 12:30 PM

I totally understand the money concept, pure and simple. But pure and simple they haven't received another of my dollars since! If it wasn't for the pc users they would be more broke than Texas Instruments right now. Just a shame they had to hold out so long to even release it. I still almost broke down and bought it till I read they cut out the coop on it. BASTARDS! But what do I expect they didn't get where they are today by being nice guys!

Damn right. I bought my XBox with Halo on opening day while everyone else bought that shitty wrestling game and the other launch shit. Halo was a damn good game. It doesn't get much better concerning FPS on console. Putting it on XBox wasn't a bad idea because it worked so damned well.

overall i just dont like bill he does all sorts of things that piss me off

the latest is a forced upgrade of messeger

the new version is far more resorce intestive

theburner 11-17-2003 01:42 PM

you can't get mad at Bill Gates/MS for the current situation of their software. When you run a MONOPOLY you don't have to put out polished code, secure software etc.. Why?? Because the average user doesn't understand Linux, can't comprehend Unix, and can't find a Mac. He is running a company while maximizing profits. That is his job. Blame consumers/competitors for not demanding or offering quality substitutes.
We are in a capitalistic society where the CONSUMER is the driving force behind DEMAND. If there is no demand, the product doesn't sell. Yet we continue to DEMAND MS Products (maybe not Dragon2fire, but most of the rest of the country!).

Do you really think that MS is spying on our computers? Do you know what kind of server/storage farm MS would require to log information on every PC w/ Windows in North America?
MS does record your initial installation of XP, they store your serial number on a server to prevent multiple installs. Just that information alone (serial number) has to be wiped every 3 months to make room for the next 3 months worth of information.
Personally I don't like big brother watching, but you have more to worry about than MS watching your pc. How bout the feds reading your email?

I know for a fact that in the eula for xp it says that they will report anything illegal they detect on your computer (read stolen mp3s)

i also know that xp has expiring dll's

Couldn't have said it better myself. Everyone that hates MS and Gates is using Windows XP. Everyone that hates Gates hates him because he has a lot of money. They hate MS because they have a monopoly. You can't blame them for that.

Krycheck 11-17-2003 10:10 PM

I hate M$ software as much as the next guy. But the Xbox is a great machine. It took a leap over Sony's and Nintendo's consoles and created a console war. And because of that Sony added freebies and more features to it's console and Nintendo lowered it's price. Also Sony will have to beat M$ with it's PS3 knowing that Xbox 2 will be much better than the first.
Yeah, MS crushes its competition sometimes but it's up against someone almost as big as them and that will benefiet you and me with better consoles and games.

I have a .. Friend, yeah that's it.. That has a 2nd hard drive FULL of MP3's, Adobe 7, and other downloadable software... If XP does report this to MS, they must not care!
I think people give more credit to MS than they deserve regarding their Big Brother Activities.. That being said, is there a back door password or code that would let someone at MS take control of your system? You bet your sweet ass.. Every code junkie writes in a script of some sort that allows them master control/access, and I bet old Billy G is just that kind of guy.

fair enough but exlplain the expiring dll's in xp huh

yea my point

Bud I swear I am not an Xp Fanboy or trying to start a flamewar... That being said we would have to look at what DLL's are expiring and their function. Could be the DLL's that expire have to do with the product registration. The DLL's could just be used one time for installation and then remove themselves after a set period of time (assuming satisfied installation). DLL's can be instructional (telling the program where to allocate memory/ or prioritize system resources) or they can hold data.
Bottom line is, it could be bad and it could be good. It could be nothing....
Just because a .dll expires doesn't mean it is a bad thing.

X-Box is not needed, we already have computers. I can get anygame thats good on that system, on the Gamecube or PS2 OR PC INCLUDING HALO. I dont like the controller, and specs arent everything. PS2 is all you need, aside from a computer. My gamecube is just for the kid inside me, for zelda, metrioid, mario, and now that square is back with nintendo, im glad i made that choice.

It might be possible to play a majority of XBox games on PC, but it's also possible to play a majority of GC and PS2 games on PC if you know what you're doing. XBox is a videogame console, not just a PC game porter or vice versa. It has many great games just as the other two consoles do. XBox has one HUGE advantage over PCs as well: compatibility. No stupid driver updates, no idiotic error messages about having anti-virus installed, no videocard or RAM upgrades, and no random crashes to the desktop. XBox games work on XBox's. I wish the same could be said about PCs...not all PC games work on computers how they're supposed to. That's one thing consoles will have over computers for a long damn time: easy to use gaming. No errors, no extra money, no compatibility issues. Games WILL work on their respective consoles. PC games simply aren't like that. Consoles are designed to play videogames...PC's aren't. They simply have the ability to play games designed around the technology available.

Probably, bastards! I don't own a Box but it would've neat to hear a BIG announcement like Halo Live or Free Live Content Download (from Bill's 2 terabyte Porn Server).

LaZy 11-19-2003 02:52 AM

I agree with IckUber. XBox just seems like the "poor mans" computer to me. The idiot proofing simplicity for running games might be nice, but the more you idiot proof something the more idiots you get. My PS2 is good enough for me. I guess if I really want an XBox I could just plug a gamepad into my PC. Better specs too. :D

That's not my point. I know it's simple to put a game in and play it, but I don't stress that it's for idiots. I'm saying that all consoles (not just XBox) actually work. They're made to play games. They play the games designed for them. PC's play games, but there's a lot of trouble with games half the time. You don't have to worry about system specs on a console. You don't have to worry about the wrong type of videocard. You don't get those lovely errors that simply make no sense. Consoles are made to play games, and that's what they do. PCs are made to run an operating system that is capable of hosting thousands of types of applications, including games. When you try to narrow down one specific field on a computer (such as gaming) it's simply going to have problems every now and then.

The fact that I can pick up a game for console and play it without worrying about the PC game problems is an advantage that consoles will have until PC games work on every type of PC flawlessly. Sorry if my point was previously unclear, this is all I was trying to get across.

-Lasereth

theburner 11-19-2003 08:23 AM

Lasereth is 100% correct. When C&C Generals came out I had to not only buy a $50 game but a $150 graphics card just to play it.
BTW: A couple of other Console Strengths: No hacks/mods. Everyone is on a level playing field. Compatibility: Everyone is playing the same version on the same system with the same specs. 99% of my online activity has gone off without a hitch.
Cons: No mods. Counterstrike was an excellent Mod that until recently was ONLY available on PC. Most good games are released first for PC, so console people have to wait.
All in all my PC still plays Strategy games and some new releases. However, my console is now FPS specific. I don't play and FPS games on my PC anymore.

cas305 11-19-2003 12:41 PM

Is it true that MS shit on Nvidia and they won't being doing the graphics for xbox2?? If so I think that really hurts the value of xbox2.
