Sony fights back and decides to drop the retail price of their PS2 to just $99.99, the price of a Nintendo GameCube.

Now, this information isn't official yet, but we are not going to report it as a rumor either. A trusted friend of mine from with-in the retail giant Target has stumbled upon the in-store advertisement designs for the PS2 price drop. He then got a confirmation of the price drop from his Regional Vice President. While not exactly the highest position in the chain, he does know of happenings before they happen. Target is planning on doing a huge promotion for the PS2 price drop.

GCA will keep you informed.
rumours abound.

a quick hint. google is your friend. have a question about a rumour? google it. need info about something? google it. feeling lonely on a friday night? google it.

When asked whether the price of the PlayStation 2 would drop to $99 this fall at Sony Computer Entertainment America's Gamers' Day this September, North American executives officially said no, there wasn't a need for a price drop.

After Nintendo America lowered the price of the GameCube on September 25 and the sales numbers came in, however, SCEA may have changed its collective mind.

Sources from Target today said they have received printed fliers with the price of the PlayStation 2 at $99. The change will allegedly happen in mid-November, right before Thanksgiving, the traditional starting gate for Christmas shopping in North America.

But having spoken with other retailers and a Wall Street analyst with close connections to Target, there is no indication that SCEA has any intention to lower its hardware prices, much less skipping the $149.99 price point (The PS2 currently goes for $179.99). Logic works against the price drop. SCEA generally doesn't single out retailers to promote these kinds of changes; it usually works with the entire retail community. To add to that, SCEA has seen significant hardare sales thus far and it looks to make its ambitious projections for 2003 without lowering the price of the PS2.

SCEA officials were unable to return IGN's phone calls before deadline. SCEA officials normally don't respond to rumors, but it usually returns phone calls regarding this topic.

In this console generation, Nintendo has remained the lowest priced console, but the price hasn't ever had a major effect on the Japanese manufacturer's market share in North America. The recent cut to $99 proved huge gains for Nintendo. In the last two weeks as it has managed to outsell the PS2, with some stores in the Bay Area selling as many as 70 units in the first few days.

We'll have more on the rumor as the story develops.

I think he was asking if it was official or not. I posted that IGN info a couple of weeks ago, and I don't think it's been confirmed yet. :( Oh well, it's supposed to drop this month, so I guess we'll see.

Heck, if the price drops to $99.99, I'll buy a second PS2.

I dunno about that, they would be taking one hell of a loss per unit...

cjayemail 11-04-2003 08:00 PM

xbox's go for $150 now without a controller, 180 with!
come on microsoft, follow the trends!

burgerdog 11-08-2003 03:15 AM

I doubt that PS2 will drop in price before e3 next year, if then. They are selling well presently.

and why would you get an Xbox w/o a controller???

Ganguro 11-08-2003 06:01 AM

rumors about the xbox thing..
like Unliked one said they would be taking a fucking loss per unit if they dropped to 99, or even 149. As it is.. the newer model xboxen already cost MS over 250+ dollars per unit to produce. If a ps price drop comes down to 99 i would proally get one, just so i could play certain games.. but it better happen before Matio Kart:double dash is released.. or there wont be a need to :)

X-box and ps2 prices will probably drop further. I was following intels stock report (investment nerd) and they lost the contract for the xbox2 chips to IBM and there was a blurb about how the xbox2 is scheduled for release in Japan in June of next year and most likely sony will, keeping with the competiveness, most likely debute there PS3 in Japan around the same time. Of course this came from Business Weekly so I couldn't tell ya how reliable it is

Nah, both MS and Sony have both said they plan to release new consoles sometime in 2005 with only Nintendo seeming to be ready to release a new system in 2004 already having contracts secured with IBM and ATI.

Regardless this will be a very short turnaround for what have been largely very succesful consoles for both MS and Sony, Microsoft having supplanted Nintendo in both Europe and the US as the No. 2 console maker, and this christmas promises to be very good to xbox and you still have Halo 2 coming in the first half of 2004.

Another note on the new Xbox, with them licensing IBM's chip technology they are going to be using 128-bit chips, which means no more x86 technology and they won't be backward compatible... something makes me think this will be a BIG deal to most people...

Seriously? Got a decent article about that? I'm a little skeptical... I mean, 2004 is right around the corner, and the GC isn't doing that bad, is it?

I've heard that Microsoft and Nintendo will be releasing their next consoles in 2005 with the PS2 pushed back to *most likely* 2006 due to their cell technology that's not going as quickly as planned. Yes, Sony won't be the first to launch this time...the videogame market could get very interesting.

Does anyone know if the PS3 will support PS1 games? I know Sony already announced it would play PS2 games. As for Sony not being first to the market, well I'm not surprised. Micro$oft has been preaching that the Xbox 2 will hit stores either before or on the same day as the PS3 ever since the PS3 was first mentioned publicly.

Yep, the big N is going to launch a new system in 2004, but they haven't said what it is. For all we know it could be another Gameboy...

In my latest Electronic Gaming Monthly, the Q-Mann reports that there is a good chance that the PS3 will (get a load of this) play PS1, PS2, AND PSP games. That's right...a PS1, PS2, DVD player, PSP, and PS3 all into one system.

EGM has also confirmed a rumor about Nintendo releasing a big PROJECT in 2004, but it's not confirmed if it's going to be a new system or not. My guess is either a new Gameboy or new type of revolutionary videogame. Possibly a broadband Internet service for GC?

dammit!!!! now i can finally afford to buy one.. and I really should be saving my $$ for the MINI cooper :)

mrquackers 11-11-2003 01:24 PM

I recently talked to one of the top people at Nintendo as part of my job (reporter with national news organization) and asked him about the Target/PS2/$99 rumors and whether they'd heard those as well. He told me that as soon as they did, they called Target and asked if this was actually happening or whether it was wishful net thinking. Target told him it was just a rumor. No $99 price drop coming.

As for the eventual price cuts for the two systems? May 2004 is the best bet right now. It'll add some meat to their E3 presentations.

fugue_life 11-11-2003 10:12 PM

Microsoft announced yesterday that they were dropping the price of there current x-box... in Japan only, for right now

bparker805 11-12-2003 04:57 PM
