Chrono Cross for PS1, Xenogears for PS1, Chrono Trigger for SNES (some argue this is the best RPG ever made; I will certainly vouch for that), Tales of Destiny for PS1.
I can think of a lot more, but those are the ones that were on my mind at the time. I especially suggest Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. -Lasereth

Well... Little more specific maybe?
I'll go with what I know(PC) These are kinda recent titles. Neverwinter Nights is excellent. Dungeon Siege is fun, pretty, and not very complicated. Morrowind is fun and very pretty. First person. (This and Dungeon Siege require a little more from your system) Diablo 2 is always classic and fun. Baulder' Gate/Icewind Dale are fun but more complicated Arcanium, couldn't stand the graphics, but got good reviews Devine Divinity, same story. Or try a MMORPG Edit: I also have played and very much enjoyed both of the Golden Sun games for the GBA. Both got very good reviews. GBA not on your list, but maybe you could emulate.

Hmm I have Neverwinter nights... got bored of it
Morrowing was rather fun but really really really long. I never really caught on to xenogears i watched my cousin play it I might try Cronotrigger though that sounds like a good one... thanks for the advice guys |

im pretty sure gaming companys have set up some sort of rules against making any new good RPGs. I have tried pretty much every new RPG that has come out recently for pc and havnt been even the slightest bit impressed. They are putting out games that might of passed as good 4 years ago but theres no reason that stuff should be put on the shelfs now. personaly im really sick of the 3rd person veiw from above looking down on the group with circles around my members. thats been done to death they can really try to find a better way to do things.
If you really do want a good rpg the best ones out that i know of are the mmorpgs. only thing about them is they dont seem to have a real plot like the final fantasy games always did. |

planescape: torment was apparently one of the best DnD PC RPG out there.. also try fallout 2, open-ended game with lots of game to game variation..

Maybe you could start by buying a "current generation" console, like an XBOX with Knights of the Old Republic. KOTOR is the best RPG of the year bar none and not a single RPG on the pc can toch it for depth, replayability or storyline...

Chrono Trigger-SNES
Final Fantasy 3-SNES Dragon Warriors 1-4-NES Ultima 1-NES 7th Saga-SNES and highly underrated Soulblazer-SNES Sword of Vermillion-Genesis Dark Savior-Saturn Dragon Force-Saturn Morrowind and it's expansions-PC Neverwinter Nights and Shadows of Undrentide-PC Arx Fatalis and it's badly needed patches-PC Wizardry 8-PC Faxanadu-NES I could go on for years... but I'll stop now. I loved all of these games.

As much as I loved playing Diablo 2 & Dungeon Siege & Divine Divinity, they can't be seriouslly considered as RPGs. I think if you like Final Fantasy 7 then you would definitely like Final Fantasy 9 and Chrono Cross and Xenogear.
Morrowind is really good too but very different from the RPG from Japan, and very very non-linear. It's almost overwhelming to start off with. |
