Make your Xbox rock at 1.4GHz

Computex 2003 Ideas of our time

By Mike Magee in Taipei: Thursday 25 September 2003, 03:09

A FIRM on the show floor here in Taipei is offering the chance to buy an Xbox that uses a Celeron 1.4GHz/256K cache chip rather than the feeble 733MHz Pentium III that ships with the console.
Friendtech is also offering a mod for the Xbox which provides S-Video and A/V output, 5.1 surround sound and a hard disk upgrade.

The package it sells includes the console, a gamepad, an S-Video AV cable, a bag, a power cable and manuals. The chip inside this machine can be switched from a so called “standard speed” of 740MHz to a “turbo” speed of 1480MHz.

The company claims that its mod of the Xbox doesn’t affect people who buy its FT-XBX2. It says it buys its machines from Microsoft or through authorized resellers, and that allows it to change the specs of the console. The mods cause it to lose its warranty rights, but provides its own 90 day warranty on the machine.

But in its product literature it says because the FT-XBX2 can read DVDs and MP3s from all regions it provides a “Media Key” with the machine which means users must agree not to use it for illegal purposes. That includes copying games and pirated movies. µ

why would you bother with faster speed? I have no problems with my xbox, games have been built to run in an invorment based on the origonal cpu.

The only way I can see this helping is in the framerate department. But I rarely experience any choppiness when playing anyway so that kinda renders this mod useless, to me. *shrug*

The main reason for this is because of all the homebrew X-box stuff. They can benefit from the higher framerates and everything. There are plenty of emulators and homebrew games at the momenet, and this could help the xbox development scene. If anyone buys it that is.

The unGamer spends all his time maximising his systems capablities for optimum performance, so much so that he has not any time to play the games he purchases.

try playing dynasty warriors 4 with 2 players on a normal xbox, or serious sam, or most shooters for that matter :/

i can think of alot of games that would benefit...although id rather have more ram.

XBox "Live" function will be worthless. Maybe this is being done to make it a Linux machine.

We call them "PC Gamers". ;)

I play XBox because I have only small moments in time to play games. I don't want to sit tweaking and configuring. I'd rather spend my time playing and not working on being an unGamer.

As said above, game companies work with the same specs all through the life of a system (usually). That is how 4th and 5th generation games can look a whole lot better than the 1rst generation games. The developers learn how to squeeze every ounce out of a system. With these different specs, I bet not every game would be "improved", some might even look worse due to the game code being meant for the original configuration.

I'd rather get 1 gig of ddr ram upgrade for my xbox rather than a cpu upgrade.
